The X-Com sequel from Fireaxis sounds to good to be true. It's the company of Sid Meier, yes.
But I'm afraid of the involved. There have been presantations of some features of the game. And there has been many of this next-gen-talk, about how many features X-Com were only there 'because of the limitations of technology at that time'. Like the form in which turn-based combat was used. And this technology argument is heard quiet to often when reboots are made.
It will be better than a fps, that maybe for sure. But I'm afraid if it will be good in the sense of what you'd expect from an X-Com sequel. We'll see.

Erm, hasn't the Firaxis Xcom remake been in production since 2008, well before the FPS Xcom was even annouced back in 2010?

You can't really say Firaxis has 'now been tasked' when it's been in production longer than people were even aware of the FPS Xcom...

Well said David though, sadly, business is what it is. As is often stated creating a new brand/ip is very risky which is why the old ones get abused but at the same time the bottom line demands that "broader audiences" be reached.

Even so the people in charge would be wise to exercise more caution as often times a game fails to impress the crowd much while at the same time pissing off the core fans.

Also, the new XCOM plays "just like you remember" only in so far that both games are turn based and set in the X-Com universe. Check out Xenonauts if you're feeling sober enough: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/10/01/xenonauts-preview/

In the end I can only say, thank the Spaghetti Monster for digital distribution and publisher independent means of funding.
