I do think it would have helped if we knew that/why Penk was not with the others featured here. It would make complete sense that he would be running towards the head mason’s hut even before any indication that that’s where the monster was, just to get his drum a bit faster, especially since he mentioned music when we saw him last.

I’ll frankly admit I completely forgot about Penk during these scenes on the first read-through. Which is likely to happen, of course, when reading a web comic as it’s being released — and probably the type of thing that helps cover many a plot hole that would otherwise require valuable time/space to be filled by the author, and lead others to conclude that there was too much non-essential detail in the story …
