I dunno, sometimes it really is that easy. You get yourself into a state where something takes over your life and everything else goes to hell. If you’re lucky, sometimes you can look around and have something just shift, something on the order of “what the f___ am I doing?” In that case the best thing to do is take a break and step back, get your head together.
I’ve heard it happening with addicts for example or people with depressive mental conditions. So yeah I do find HR’s reaction realistic, if it’s true.

He could just leave them somewhere Carol would believe she could have left them. Not in the elevator, cuz that’s a huge security risk. Maybe in her desk drawer or something, or he could just turn them in at the front desk and not say anything incriminating.
