The Roman legions didn't really use a phalanx, nor did the Spartans (or at least, the Spartans did not use the phalanx in the true, Macedonian style which Alexander the Great's men used) The Romans used a shield wall technique sorta like a phalanx but without the whole "thicket of motherfuckin' spears in your face" thing. The Spartans fought primarily as hoplites, who were like an earlier version of phalangites, and fought in phalanx-like ordered ranks.

The real "phalanx", though, at least the one that comes to mind when someone says "phalanx" was a primarily Macedonian thing. Actually, it was Phillip of Macedon who really came up with the idea of "Hey, guys! Let's give our dudes EVEN LONGER SPEARS!!!1!" So, he equipped his men with 15 foot long spears called "sarissas", which let them form really deep formations. It was just rank upon rank of armored dudes with many, many, many spears sticking out the front of the formation, which could basically crush the armies of the other Greek states by dint of sheer bitch-slapitude.

Same idea behind the phalanx used by the armies of Alexander the Great, the Spartans and the Roman Legion.

It's the complete opposite of the Berserker model, the original shock and awe routine ;)
