Annotated 35-8
Oh, good. Now it has multiple mouths, in case the baleful eye, giant size, and all-disintegrating tentacles were starting to bore the Champions.
What are the odds, alt text? Well, the odds aren’t as high as the ones I would’ve given against Frigg saying “Holy poop,” I’ll tell ya that much. I guess she does feel the need to switch it up now and then.
Hee hee, I know this isn’t right, but viewed a certain way, the monster in panel 4 looks like it’s running after Penk and Magda on (relative to the size of its body) tiny little legs.
I love the contrast of using the semi-euphemism “poop” only to drop the f-bomb immediately thereafter
Tiny little legs…now I can’t unsee it.
Is it just me, or is this comic showing up on the front page but not linked to from http://guildedage.net/comic/annotated-35-7/ ?
I seem to have this issue with the last few pages, where the previous-to last one does not link to the latest, until the next page is published.
I’ve seen this issue sometimes but am not seeing it now. I’ve never fully isolated why it sometimes shows up for some of us and sometimes doesn’t.
Hmm.. it just switched behaviour for me:
I started on the main page, guildedage.net, went back one page and found the “next” button to be inactive.
read some comments on 35-7 to 35-9, still no “next” button on 35-9. Got some tea, refreshed 35-9, and there’s the next button!
Could it have to do with my local time vs. the server’s? Maybe the code responsible for updating the “next” link is confused as to when the next page becomes available? I’m on CEST (GMT +2), and the switch happened around 14:00.
Anyways, I’ll survive :)
So, this may have been discussed elsewhere, but: As I understand it, HR is responsible for bringing the beast to Arkerra. Is he also influencing what it does? And what were his plans for it?
What would make the most sense to me is that he intends for it to eat the Five (and then be banished by himself), which may also be a reason why he would have moved Best/Wav back to Arkerra (or that may be an accident, since he’s travelled between worlds before). But if he wants the beast to eat the Five but not the rest of Arkerra (because clearly he wants Arkerra to stay intact so that he can rule it), then it would need some kind of motivation/urge to go after them, rather than devouring everything else first.
But here we see it going after their (second-)biggest enemies. Which makes a ton of sense plot-wise, and of course HR’s control over the beast is not complete, but … to what extent is he behind what’s happening here (because that clearly does not work out in his favour), and to what extent is this a really annoying accident to him? And what would have happened if his plan had worked perfectly?
HR grew frustrated with making elaborate, hyperspecific plans to deal with the Five after the Battle of B’ial Vezk proved that any plan he made would fray into something not quite what he wanted. At this point, he’s sowing chaos on two fronts by aiding the crossover of the Beast and manifesting Brother Homon. He’s still kind of hoping to take out one or more of the Five (the Beast’s ability to destroy beings, soul and all, would prevent those resurrections that keep galling him), but he’s starting to focus more on his primary goal of godhood. Weakening the boundaries between his two creations will aid him in that, as we see down the line.
That certainly makes sense, thanks.
It’s just … the beast might also just ruin his godhood because if the Five didn’t stop it, there would not be much to rule over for HR…
Which is easy to say for me but reading about what’s currently going on on Freenode, I suppose the risk one’s own power grab destroying the thing one is trying to take over is an aspect which humans are indeed prone to overlooking …
Beast in panel 4 totally reminds me of Witch Hazel.
Never tell me the odds!
