Annotated 6-13
Well, it wasn’t going to be THAT easy.
Hey, it’s Rachel’s first appearance! Of sorts.
As Gravedust suggested in his opening narration, the most dangerous thing about Scarlett is that she believes her own bullshit, or at least most of it. And any lies she tells, like for instance whether Gigundus is alive or dead, are justified by the lies that she believes.
It’s fashionable these days to believe that the enemies of one’s tribe are motivated solely by spite and performative cruelty, but I think that doesn’t go deep enough. I think we’re all amateur fantasy writers, and most people have a robust ability to write a story in their own minds in which they are the hero.
Um, where is Rachel?
I had the same question. Assuming she’s one of the other nuns and will be revealed shortly – we just don’t know it’s her yet.
We don’t really see her here, but she was there.

Going by the replay from Rachel’s later retelling, she’s the one we’re seeing from behind who cut Gravy.
And the one punched
The one punched on-panel here is Scarlett, but yes, Rachel is the one at the righthand side of the last panel.
Huh, I guess the authors made an error when Rachel was doing the retelling. Also ya that is definitely scarlet in the image it is just not super easy to remember her by appearance
On the one hand, that’s not wrong. On the other hand, there are people who objectively harm the world, and who act as if even the gentlest attempt to reign them in is a horrible personal attack against them. Whether or not they actually believe they’re justified doesn’t really make any difference.
And somehow we were surprised when it turned out Dusty was ripped.
Ow! Right in the broken rib!
Rachel doesn’t make her first tagged appearance til Chapter 11. Had you guys thought about the existence of Rachel at this point in the story?
Nope!
In panels 1&3, you can tell from the lax bowstring that Gravedust’s bow isn’t strung to be fired, and yet he has it drawn to be fired in the last panel– what’s going on here?
Loosed, rather. *Fired* wouldn’t be accurate.
I panel three, the string isn’t quite lax. So if I’m guessing after he gut punched the nun, he started drawing the string. In that third panel, he was still in the act of drawing. Either that, or the string is drawn in that panel, but the angle in which we’re viewing Gravey makes things a bit difficult to see this.
There’s definitely curvature to the visible part of the string in panel 3, and it looks to me like it can’t be being drawn under tension there– if we follow the (obscured) string back to where the pinch-point must be, it doesn’t look like Gravedust’s arm is in any position to be drawing it.
…Then again, in the last panel, considering that we can see Gravedust’s left hand in frame, and not the arms of the bow, I have questions there about what’s going on, considering the length of the bow and the degree to which the bow is drawn as indicated by the string, apparently with only casual effort (from Gravedust’s posture). It must not be strung there, either.
Urk– right hand, I meant. To panel left.
