Jack and the Beanstalk is of course one of those common cultural reference points and has been since the 19th century. It feels generic enough that I don’t really mind working it into Arkerra as a “fae tale,” even though we generally avoided direct references to things like the Bible and Robin Hood. Note, though, that Phil artfully avoids ever naming the protagonist of this story. Is it “Alpert and the Beanstalk” here? Who’s to say.
I’m enjoying this throwback to classic Syr’Nj with a twist. It was totally in keeping for her Volume-One self to be all “What are cows,” but she’s almost as mystified that her teammates don’t seem to know about insta-grow beanstalks.
Joe Hunter’s latest work can be found here.
Do enjoy this filler. Fun dialog and it has been some time since we watch the team do more typical adventurer like stuff such as this dungeon crawl.
It’s kinda fun to imagine if this kind of stories would become fables in a world like this. Sure with our heroes, who mostly have their roots in the real world (babumdish…), it’s logical they recite them, but like Syr’Nj said, they really do have stuff that works remotely to the “fabled” effect. Heck, there even might exists a gold pooping goose somewhere in the realm.
Then again, our stories were born in times people when people probably saw them as possible reality as well, so…
