her name is syringe…and she likes to stick people with small vials with needles on one end…I’ll give you three guesses as to what those things are called…
Wow, and all this time I thought it was simply close to how you say ‘syringe.’ SEER-urn-JUH was what I always pictured, and instead, it’s just like the names of the three main characters of Elf Life. Now I know.
It isn’t. The key words are ‘close to.’ This was all the before this strip, mind you, and, for United States American English speakers, a ‘ isn’t usually a substitute for an i with the smilely curve on top.
With this known, that means that her kid sister’s name is pronounced ‘fringe.’ Both ironic within the Game World and fitting back in the world Syr’nj, Byron, Frigg, Gravedust, and Payet Best’s/Grys’il’s players (I call them “Peace Sign,” “Pentagram,” “Arm Bands,” “Neck Scarf,” and “Neck Bling” until their names and identities come up) are from.
That just leaves Daddy…..Hmmm *Reaches for Dictionary*
And their embarrassing cousin is Embrace Change, their mother Fair Exchange, and their father Narrow Range. (Which I only figured out now, after spending forever trying to figure it out when he was alive…)
We know essentially nothing about her–she only spoke one line–so it’s hard to be certain. But that first comment is about painting, so it could be “O’Keeffe.”
Bandit: “Wait wait. You mean that wasn’t th’ intention? I thought you got yer first names sorta like th’ way us gnomes do, after yer definin’ char’ct’ristic s’been made appar’nt?”
In spite of the fact that Syr’Nj has heard her name spoken like that her whole life, and should have made the connection earlier, I’m more surprised that there are people in the comments who haven’t. I always felt that the Nj family’s names were very blatant, like the residents of a certain Gaulish village.
And to think someone had to point it out to her first.
I never realized that was how you said it, either. I always thought it was pronounced Sayr-Ni
So that’s two whooshes for you, then?
I always wondered why the comments got stuck with puns for so long.
She just got the point herself, which is why she cried out.
all these needleless puns tonight. it’s sure to make me go ouch.
Every bloody comic has one of these threads. Can nobody find a different vein of humor?
We’re just trying to inject a little humor into everyone’s lives, make things less dull. For that, you need a sharp wit.
Now I know why Syr is so thin-skinned; she’s hypo-dermic!
Nope, its all in vein.
On the contrary, I think the author named her this way on purpose…There’s definitely signs of an artery-l motive here.
It was kind of a flu’k shot.
Rhymes with Orange
The look of delight on her face in that last panel…
It’s kind of precious, in a way.
I don’t get it.
her name is syringe…and she likes to stick people with small vials with needles on one end…I’ll give you three guesses as to what those things are called…
On panel 4, she explains that “Syr” sounds like Sir, and “nj” sounds like Inj.
Taken together, those two syllables sound like “Sir Inch” which conjures an image of a Mite-Sized-Knight.
And now you know the joke.
Geez man! I was trying to confuse him and lead him to a false conclusion…thanks for spoiling it!
Well it’s about time!
Wow, and all this time I thought it was simply close to how you say ‘syringe.’ SEER-urn-JUH was what I always pictured, and instead, it’s just like the names of the three main characters of Elf Life. Now I know.
What? Have never heard ‘syringe’ pronounced that way before
It isn’t. The key words are ‘close to.’ This was all the before this strip, mind you, and, for United States American English speakers, a ‘ isn’t usually a substitute for an i with the smilely curve on top.

That just leaves Daddy…..Hmmm *Reaches for Dictionary*
……..His name rhymes with ‘orange’ because he’s dead and therefore, no more, huh?
Look below, his name is/was Narrow Range
I always pronounced it as a ‘y’ sound, I never even had a chance to get the pun D:
I’m ashamed that I never got this until just now
Snarkastic Syr’ng is snarkastic.
Fairly sure she is being serious
Must.now.read.all.elf.panels.again.and.pronounce.names.properly!!!
AARGH!! More days lost to the intertubes!
and somehow an appropriately CDO (OCD is not alphabetical) gravatar :)
So Fr’Nj is read as Fringe?
And their embarrassing cousin is Embrace Change, their mother Fair Exchange, and their father Narrow Range. (Which I only figured out now, after spending forever trying to figure it out when he was alive…)
Oooh, Narrow Range makes much more sense than “useless syllable-orange”.
Don’t forget her psycho nephew, Unhinged
Her arsonist friend, Tree Singe
Her bulimic aunt, Purge-Binge
In a nice twist, “Syringe” could be named after her, rather than the other way around. I think she’s the only one we’ve seen use them.
Very cunning, reader Linguz!
Well, this IS interesting.
I wonder if the same thing applies to other elven names…
yes…yes it does…all elf names are puns.
Fr’nj = Fringe
Faereksch’Nj = Fair Exchange
Naror’nj = Nar Orange…?
Kon’kr = Conquer
Tay’lr = Tailor
Gr’zl = Grizzle
Bibli’oh = Biblio (latin for book)
Kur’ik = ???
Oak’f = ???
Kur’ik = Couric, as in , a TV journalist in America.
As a comment above clarifies, Naror’Nj = Narrow Range. Or at least, that makes some sense for it.
I’m lost on Oak’F as well, though. Probably just an excuse to call a Wood Elf an Oak.
…Drat. Hyperlink didn’t work right. I guess I fail HTML tags. Imagine the name ‘Katie Couric’ after the ‘as in’.
The link worked, you just forgot to close it properly before adding the rest
We know essentially nothing about her–she only spoke one line–so it’s hard to be certain. But that first comment is about painting, so it could be “O’Keeffe.”
Works for me.
Kon’kr = Conker, aka the horse chestnut
Naranga* was the Sanskrit word from which the English word Orange was eventually derived after passing through Persian(Narang*) and Arabic(Naranj*).
Naranja is Spanish for Orange.
*There should be a lot of fancy pronunciation jazz on those words but I’m incredibly lazy.
The reading glasses a clearly a magic laser. Thinking they’re a cannon is just ridiculous!
hahahaha xD I had the same reaction as her xD I *do feel a little less smart now though ^^
I remember how long it took me to get that the first time.
This comments thread makes me feel superior.
Remember that joke about the Schuylkill?
I getz all the jokes!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And now I will forever imagine Syr’nj having the voice of Rachael Weisz.
Wait. I thought back in the day, they said it rhymed with orange. Now I’m confused.
I’m kind of shocked how many people didn’t apparently get that (or any of the other Wood Elf name puns) before now.
Clearly none of them actually bother to read these comments.
“Combine them into word”? I think Syr’ lost one word there.
Huh. I always put a little pause between the syllables, maybe a little extra emphasis somewhere… but. Just Syringe, outright, then.
I’m a bit sad that the reading glasses aren’t canon.
