Chapter 20 – Page 6
Sorry for the slight delay, I’m still getting used to the new site myself. We switched from Comic Press to Comic Easel and while definitely an improvement, it takes a little getting used to.

But then who will be the Friggs?
I love this plan.
Alright Gravy, time for your diplomancy check.
Every time E opened his mouth, the check got harder by one…
And suddenly, I’m a cultists…
E-merl is just THAT bad at diplomacy, huh?
He just needs to byron out some minor glitches.
Oooh, design changes. Reader approval.
Seconded. I endorse the assortment of spear points up top, especially today!
After all, who doesn’t like stake and Gravy? ;D
E-Merl: So much ham, he’s making me hungry.
I like in the last panel how it seems like a deliberate attempt to take advantage of the dog nose for a very Goofey-esc pose.
Hello. I’m a new reader and first time poster, but rest assured – here for the loooong run. Here’s hopin’ I didn’t mess up this elongated post…

Finished the archive binge. Finally can get back to living my normal life :) To give you a more adequate idea what I mean by this I’ll tell you that I read a total of 161 webcomics (just checked my Google Reader). Various update schedules as can be expected, but you’ll get the picture if I tell you that since I started reading Guilded Age (beginning of NOVEMBER 2012) up till today I STOPPED READING ANYTHING ELSE! I got immersed into the world of Arkerra so much, I almost feel like one of The Five!
The art is fantastic. Erica did a splendid job, but I honestly think that John has been a more than worthy successor! The art is just wonderful. I can’t have enough of it. Whenever something seems too good to be true (I’m not joking here!) I always write black scenarios in my head, like “oh god now that I found this awesome comic I’m sure it’s gonna be my luck and they part ways over a petty conflict or life decisions or whatever” – that is why I am very happy that John will have aid in the form of his brother, this is excellent news! It tells me that on the contrary, the chemistry between the creators (now there’s gonna be FOUR of them!) is very good, they want to work together even more! and there is no point in painting the future black as it is in my nature, I guess. So yeah, the art, breathtaking.
The writing. Huh. The writing is something different here, the amount of times I was surprised and caught unaware befuddles me greatly! Witty, concise, imaginative. Ugh. Language barrier prevents me from being more elaborate, suffice to say it’s one of the sharpest I’ve encountered so far!
There’s this li’l game called the Witcher. Haven’t played it as I’m not really a gamer, but I know it got good enough publicity overseas that you Yanks ;) might’ve heard about it. So The Witcher is actually based on an EPIC fantasy saga by my favourite Polish Fantasy Writer Mr Andrzej Sapkowski. I get a similar vibe from your comic, quite a few same patterns.. I like to call it realistic fantasy – action, epicness and all that jazz of course present, but also touching on tough subjects like interspecies (doesn’t fit but can’t find anything better sorry) racism, having a bigoted supreme nation that will slowly absorb the rest of the world (although Witcher’s Nilfgaard was depicted from the get-go as “the bad guys”, but technically speaking it’s irrelevant here, similarities between them and Gastonia are pretty evident to me), politics presented in a very interesting and intriguing two-sided way, the wide variety of controversial (hence interesting) and gradually increasing cast, I could go on… and on top of that it’s funny as well! :) ha!
The comic is excellent but this is also to do with reading all the comments underneath every update, it’s an integral part of the experience! I can’t stop myself from checking if somebody has similar predictions as I, the Obligatory Pun Thread, the crazy guesses at who is Best’s alt, etc. And the only instances of the infamous “first”-comment-plague here have actually been convoluted into a riddle, ha! That’s the quality of readers GA has! I’m totally astounded how the active readership (yes, you who reads this!) involuntary contributed to me engulfing into this wonderful fantasy realm even more.
Anyways, I am a firm believer that for doing something awesome one should be rewarded accordingly, that is why I already subscribed to monthly GA+, ordered the book and am eagerly awaiting the Kickstarter Project!!!!!!!

I’ll end with saying a few words about GA PLUS as I don’t think it gets enough publicity around here (in the comments I mean) – GUYS WHAT ARE YOU WATING FOR?!?!?! Buy it out, it’s like less than 3 bucks a month! Heck, in the UK where I’m currently located it’s less than 2 quid! That’s like 5 cigarettes, for cogs sake! You get access to 3 (so far) additional stories, you get access to unlettered, hi res images of the pages. Unlettered means without the speech bubbles, that’s like +30% more awesome art for one to drool over :) And the annotations! the cool anecdotes! ha! an in-depth insight into the minds of the writers! they’re even more crazy than I thought ;) Seriously, what are you waiting for?
On a sidenote, it would be cool if GA+ had comments as well.
OK OK, wrapping up here.
To the creators: THANK YOU PHIL KAHN, T CAMPBELL, JOHN WALTRIP, ERICA HENDERSON and Jason Waltrip for all this awesomeness. Please continue to deliver. I’ll support you guys all the way.
To the commenters: Thank you for being awesome as well! I know how this looks like, I shit you not, they didn’t pay me to write all this :-)
Cheers,
Dave, aka DeathDave
PS. As I said, back to my normal life.. oh, what’s that Google Reader? 514 updates of comics to catch up on? uh-oh..
I
readconsumed the archives in 2 days a couple weeks ago so I did not catch nearly as many of the comment threads as I should have. The ones I did read, however, were absolute gold.Welcome aboard, Dave, moirla. It’s good to know new people are finding Guilded Age and enjoy reading it as much as we enjoy making it.
1) You flatter us to degrees I literally cannot handle. Thank you for those words.
2) T and I have straight up too many petty conflicts to break our team up over a single one of them. It’s one of my weird personal philosophies: If you let yourself use up all your freakout energy over the petty things, you’ll be calm enough to handle the major things. YMMV.
3) While the 5/week updates don’t start until this Monday, John and Jason have already begun working together at the start of Chapter 20. So you’ve already seen the Four-Man Team in action!
4) That is the most glowing recommendation for GAPlus a man could ask for. It’s exactly as full of content as he says, folks, we’ve been building its archives for two out of the three years GA has been alive. Subscribe now for loads of extra content and a discount merch store!
If you’d panicked with us earlier, you wouldn’t need to panic now!
“Dead doesn’t mean stupid!”
Until the last panel, I found it entertaining to assume that Gravy was making the world’s most occult pizza.
the scene’s not over yet, it may still happen.
He needed to wuss slap E-merl BAM!
Oooo now that’s a BURRRNNN!
Wasn’t this the same plot for an episode of Scooby Doo?
Fitting, since today’s comic stars Scooby and Shaggy.
Rut-roh!
E-merl, it’s pronounced “hyes.”
Like the new website background,
But I’m gonna miss those daggers.
And on the scooby/ shaggy front
I defiantly see both in E
“Ruh-roh, Gravy!”
