OK…so…..uh…I guess punitive measures need to be taken for this crime against viewership?
Seriously though, I didn’t think that she’d get de-rezzed, after having already been in hand to hand with it
Though what it does to the player is still to be determined. Guesses on Shanna and Xan coming to a house whose user just had something akin to a brain aneurysm during a boss battle?
It would be strange if something like that happened. All typical players are just viewing the game in standard format through their monitor; unless the digibeast is actually affecting the outside world right now with its actions I don’t find it likely that it would actually hurt the real life player.
As to the character, we’ve seen Bandit come back from death, but so far as we know what this monster deletes is deleted for good. Though I’m sure Rachel’s player will open a ticket if her character got deleted. :P
Yeah, to outside observers this is just an amazingly good game crossover. I can see her player going on all the boards, talking about this, other players to, the rare dangerous monster from that other game that permadeaths.
It wouldn’t surprise me if the player of this character ends up being killed in the real world though… maybe by that big guy who’s chasing Shanna and Xan — can’t remember if he has a name or not.
It’s already been established that the game world was built (or perhaps discovered and altered) by magic that’s beyond HR’s ability to fully comprehend or control. It’s also been shown that HR wishes to use this magic to become a god in the “real” world.
I’m actually expecting there to be real-world consequences ) or at least seemingly-coincidental real-world tragedies) that coincide with the creature killing player characters.
Looks like both her legs are crushed under some wooden beams in the next to last panel. The only people fast/strong enough to get her out are Frigg and Landshark.
See that spot of blood on Rachel’s habit? Notice how there’s a sharp-looking point pressing up there from the inside? Either a broken piece of wood impaled her leg or that’s her leg bone poking through her soft tissues: Compound fracture, just a few inches above the knee joint.
Take a look at her leg. It’s broken. Sundar might be strong but I don’t think he can carry two people to safety.
My guess is that Rachel figured that she can barely move, hardly fight, and that more likely than not she would just end up getting someone else killed when they try to save her if she doesn’t die when there is nothing anyone can do about it.
Rachel has an open fracture of her leg. Unable to run. Where’s glowy protectoshit when you need it?
Here’s my thoughtful, measured comment on panel 5: WAAAHHH &@’#%¥*snif
I don’t know, we’ve gotten two major incidents of resurrection, one of which was from a non-Player Character. Maybe Bandit was an exception, but Rachel coming back could be the final straw that makes the adventurers say ‘Nope, something is definitely weird.’
Well, if HR really does become a “god”, then he’s gonna wanna try out his new powers, by creating a Genesis Planet. If he uses the Beast as the primordial goo, then the part of it that is Rachel could regenerate into a new Rachel.
There’s always a hoaky plot device, if only in a paragraph long fanfic.
Wait, If my memory serves me right, Rachel is being run by a RL (in-universe) person. So what will happen to the real world player once the character get deleted this way? If she just using a normal PC, she should be fine….BUT! HR is backing this up with some serious Technomancy. I fear that there will be a back lash to either comatose/brain death/our out right kill the RL player. I fear it might be so. Shannon will find a nasty surprise when she comes across one of the players dead at their PC….
This IS a video game. Maybe somebody has another life for Rachel he/she can click on. (Y’know a little nun icon on the left hand side bottom screen that ya earn from scoring big in the last level.
what if HR is actually trying to get them out of the game (as in- disconnect, not die), and this is the only way?
Rach’s gonna wake up and be like “wow…this..is…AWESOME!”
and everyone’s happy!
HR has no control over who the beast attacks though. I’m not even sure he was the one who set it loose. If my memory serves me right, he may have directed the cultists’ portal to point to Cyberia, but that’s probably all.
HR’s been pretty clear about his ultimate goal: he wants to be back in control over his world. Why he hasn’t just unplugged the five is still unclear. He seemed willing to kill other people. He must have a reason though – perhaps they’re powering his link to the world. So the idea of him wanting to delete their toons isn’t out of the question, but this isn’t really his doing.
Don’t forget that we’ve been watching HR’s descent into madness. The lengths he will go to for his obsession work waking the Five don’t need to still be internally consistent.
It will be interesting to see which way they go with Rachel’s player:
a) “Aw, man; that thing wiped one of my toons! Now I’ve gotta start a new one from scratch!”
b) “Wait; that thing shut down my account?!? I’m locked out!”
c) [slumps over the keyboard in a puddle of drool as technomantic feedback wipes her mind]
She had to send Frigg ahead with Sundar. He can’t stay ahead of that thing with 2 people in tow.
However, praying when she could have fought back, seems a bit weak. Unless that healing spell was the last of her mana, since she doesn’t actually feel the pain, most players would have kept fighting back.
It’s not really clear how much of the character’s personality comes from the player and how much of it is what the character does when the player is not in control. It’s possible that all the player is seeing is that Rachel is under a status effect that prevents her from moving or fighting, and we see Rachel praying because that’s what she’d do under the circumstances with no direct input from the player whatsoever.
(It’s something I considered throwing as an Ask an Adventurer question, but the question would have to have been delivered to the player and I don’t think we’re able to ask questions of characters that haven’t been seen on-screen yet.)
Honestly, I hope she dies and stays dead. Not because I dislike the character (I don’t! She’s great.) but because I’m sick of how nerdy media, particularly, is so eager to ignore the realities of non-existence.
Yay, she finaly died! -took long enough though… -.-
Awh well, now all we need is a scene where it turns out Byron murdered all of his crew and is all weepy like:
“No, not again!”
The comic needs to go back to having less characters and more development.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no! Rachel! I know you have an injured leg, but you can still make it! No, Rachel, please! E-Merl is waiting for you! He is still there! Please! RACHEL!
This game has permadeath ?
Huh.
Okay, time to create a new character, then.
Another cleric, same faction ?
No, boring.
How about “Rachel The Tentacle Ripper”, level 1 dwarven berserker ?
Damn… I loved the dynamic between her and Frigg. I can only hope that one’s dissolved she corrupts the beast, takes it over and respawns. If not that, then I predict some epic level of glowy hammershit from Frigg once she’s good and pissed off.
Didnt they have that whole virtual reality game interface thing people could use? What if they are using that? I just keep getting the image of her exploding inside that virtual reality tube in my head.
I think only the original 5 are in the tubes. They were supposed to be testers, but they never came out so I doubt they released the tubes to the public.
It kinda dawned on me recently. North Korea unleashed a nasty system trashing virus on Sony Pictures the other day. I would not doubt that virus would look like that monster.
I had to delete what I wanted to post four times. It wasn’t appropriate for public viewing. This is what you’ve done to me, and I both hate and love you for it.
Let me try this again, hoping I’m wrong: “Now cracks a noble heart.—Good night, sweet prince, And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest!—Why does the drum come hither?” Goodbye, Rachel Al-Abinya, and your unyielding open heart.
Eh… finally? I guess? At least something’s going down.
I just wish I cared more about this character. Rachel’s half a step above Sundar to me, at best. I mean, sure, condolences to all the Rachel fans out there, but… meh. :/
I will join in with practically everyone in existence, however, in saying, “… what the shulling shuck is taking you so long, Penk? For the love of Tectonicus, get your scrawny ass in gear.” >:(
I don’t believe in love
I never have, I never will
I don’t believe in love
I’ll just pretend she never was real
I don’t believe in love
I never have, I never will
I don’t believe in love
It’s never worth the pain that you feel…..
I’m not in love, so don’t forget it
It’s just a silly phase I’m going through
And just because I call you up
Don’t get me wrong, don’t think you’ve got it made
Log-off, log-off… JUST LOG OFF! You know, just in case something impossibly weird happens. Er, ‘like what’, you say? Oh, um… well I’m not sure you’d believe me if I told you. But please log-off… please?
Damnit, do not go gentle into that good night! Instead, get your glowy shit on and bash any incoming tentacles with rubble or something. But don’t just sit there and pray…
… unless, of course, the prayer is just to warm up more glowy shit. Maybe :P
I was wrong; I called it happening 2 pages ago :(
With that said; NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. I really liked Rachel even though she wasn’t nearly as developed as some of the others.
(Honestly, why couldn’t it have been Sundar… I barely know that guy. But I suppose that’s the point; it’s more emotional when it happens to character we know better, even if it’s only a little better)
If anything, the number of comments seems to speak to it’s power. I’m guessing most pages average somewhere around thirty comments. As of this post, there has been over a hundred comments!
Time for E-Merl to figure out how to reverse the link he’s got with the mage school and pull something out of hammerspace to delete that bastard with. Cantrip THIS, tentacles.
Not that you mention it, would E-Gurl’s force sphere thingy have worked against the tentacles? It’s worked against literally everything else so far, and physical contact seems to be required for de-rezzing. Shame he was elsewhere, being generally useless.
*Are you sure you want to release the character known as Rachel? This is permanent and cannot be undone.* *Yes* *No* (Tearfully selects Yes) *Rachel has been released. She will be forever missed and always loved.*
RACHEL NO
I KNOW, SHE COULD LIKE YOU KNOW ALSO RUN AWAY.
Why do all the pretty ones just stand there?
In Rachel’s case, a compound fracture in her leg.
Maybe she did it intentionally…..
D:
Okay, this isn’t even subtext anymore. This is SUPERtext.
And oh yeah, no Rachel, don’t die.
It’s called hover text, I’m almost sure.
alt text
and title
Damn it Rachel. What the fuck. This is so upsetting people aren’t even making puns.
OK…so…..uh…I guess punitive measures need to be taken for this crime against viewership?
Seriously though, I didn’t think that she’d get de-rezzed, after having already been in hand to hand with it
Maybe, if we’re lucky, Rachel will be the soul casualty of the adventurers in this battle.
I thought we agreed to have no puns.
You may have a grid, but I never did.
*salute*
This is not pimp. This is not pimp at all.
I agree with you, Koppelganger.
Guess this rules out the theory that only characters created for the game can be deleted.

I’m actually expecting there to be real-world consequences ) or at least seemingly-coincidental real-world tragedies) that coincide with the creature killing player characters.
Or just raging that their character was deleted, without any warning that she was on a hardcore server.
No greater love…
What the hell is she doing? Why didn’t she jump out the hole after her?
That’s…… actually a good question. Maybe she wants to stall the monster so that Sundar can get more distance between it and Frigg?
Looks like both her legs are crushed under some wooden beams in the next to last panel. The only people fast/strong enough to get her out are Frigg and Landshark.
Dammit, now you’re making me hope HAMMERHEAD comes to the rescue in the next page.
What, you mean you’re not always hoping for HAMMERHEAD to make an appearance? Why not?
Even better- HAMMERHEAD *and* Frigg.
I can see it now, Frigg sitting on HAMMERHEAD’s head, channeling her Glowy Everyshit into him, shouting “GET AWAY FROM HER YOU BITCH”
FUCK YES. Glowy HAMMERHEADSHIT.
Sadly if I understand how this creatures power works Rachel is already dead. Either that or she is about to bald.
See that spot of blood on Rachel’s habit? Notice how there’s a sharp-looking point pressing up there from the inside? Either a broken piece of wood impaled her leg or that’s her leg bone poking through her soft tissues: Compound fracture, just a few inches above the knee joint.

My guess is that Rachel figured that she can barely move, hardly fight, and that more likely than not she would just end up getting someone else killed when they try to save her if she doesn’t die when there is nothing anyone can do about it.
Also, death flags, but anyway.
Rachel has an open fracture of her leg. Unable to run. Where’s glowy protectoshit when you need it?
Here’s my thoughtful, measured comment on panel 5: WAAAHHH &@’#%¥*snif
BTW, Rachel just healed Frigg majorly.
Either that, or she transferred her soul into Frig, like Spock did in Wrath of Khan.
Unlike the Wrath of Khan, there will be no hoaky plot device to bring you back from the dead.
I don’t know, we’ve gotten two major incidents of resurrection, one of which was from a non-Player Character. Maybe Bandit was an exception, but Rachel coming back could be the final straw that makes the adventurers say ‘Nope, something is definitely weird.’
This is clearly different from an in-game death though. These guys ain’t coming back.
Well, if HR really does become a “god”, then he’s gonna wanna try out his new powers, by creating a Genesis Planet. If he uses the Beast as the primordial goo, then the part of it that is Rachel could regenerate into a new Rachel.

This is exactly what I was thinking.
Glad I wasn’t the only one. It smacks of .//Hacksign but such is the way of things.
I wonder how Shannon will react when she sees her first person to get killed by Technomancy?
Except Bandit.
Alternatively – what if a player dying in real life causes their character to die, and Rachel’s dying now because JJ Berten is murdering her player?
Or, maybe he gave her a choice of dying in game or IRL. And, threatened the other players in her group.
“Tell me some more about how computer games aren’t dangerous, Xan.”
Who else saw Pitch Black?
“NOT FOR ME!”
!
Yes.
Most assuredly, yet.
*yes
Man, that just makes it even worse.
This IS a video game. Maybe somebody has another life for Rachel he/she can click on. (Y’know a little nun icon on the left hand side bottom screen that ya earn from scoring big in the last level.
I imagine a Kickstarter campaign run by Hurricane: “Contribute to save Rachel!”
E-Merl is not going to be happy.
I don’t want to set the world on fire…. ok now I do.
WHAT NO NOT RACHEL!!!!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
GODDAMMIT PENK WHAT THE HELL HAVE YOU BEEN DOING???
Ohhhhh man, if Penk comes in at the last minute and saves Rach, that would be AWESOME. :D
It’s only got her hair at this point, she could just get a stylish new look! Right?
Some kind of Jaina-do?
Or her hair is deleted entirely- Rachel could be forever bald.
Ooooo! And we find out she has cultist tattoos on her scalp. XD
He’s tuning his drums, man, they’re delicate instruments. Also, pontificating on the nature of heroic sacrifice to troll fangirls.
what if HR is actually trying to get them out of the game (as in- disconnect, not die), and this is the only way?
Rach’s gonna wake up and be like “wow…this..is…AWESOME!”
and everyone’s happy!
no?
ok
Rachel’s player isn’t in a tube. Never was. She’s just a normal bloke in front of a computer in her house.
HR has no control over who the beast attacks though. I’m not even sure he was the one who set it loose. If my memory serves me right, he may have directed the cultists’ portal to point to Cyberia, but that’s probably all.

You all have a choice.
Remember that.
Not against this it seems.
I expect Wash levels of sadness here, by the way…
TOO SOON
It’ll always be too soon. :'(
This is honestly upsetting! Like, I am upset by this turn of events!
… I wasn’t sure what I was expecting, but not this.
… I was okay until I saw the alt-text DAMN YOU WILLIS!
… I forgot what comic I was reading.
Y’er killin’ me, Smalls.
I am not okay. THIS is NOT OKAY. You better deus ex that machina right the next friggin’ page, comic.
Eh, I never liked her. She wasn’t as bad as Penk’s helmet, but she was close.
To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven.
I expect we’ll find out what this purpose is very soon.
She had to send Frigg ahead with Sundar. He can’t stay ahead of that thing with 2 people in tow.

Well, you could always ask H.R. Dedalus about game mechanics I suppose.
Her power……OUR power”
Rachel knows something…..
She knows that they’re both paladins?
SUPREMELY UNCOOL
Rachel I fucking hate you
HAAAATE YOUUUUUUU

Glowy Ruler Shit from inside the beast? Maybe? Wishful thinking?
E-Merl is going to be very very angry.
“Oh, your hair is WONDERFUL. What shampoo do you use? I’m just DYING to know!”
“My shampoo? It’s called ‘Curl Up & Dye’. Why?”
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no! Rachel! I know you have an injured leg, but you can still make it! No, Rachel, please! E-Merl is waiting for you! He is still there! Please! RACHEL!

Frigg: Who the fuh….
Rachel. :-(
No. :(
It kinda dawned on me recently. North Korea unleashed a nasty system trashing virus on Sony Pictures the other day. I would not doubt that virus would look like that monster.
C’mon guys, relax.
She’ll just reroll a new character and come back.
Damn you.
Hamlet is full of great quotes that inspire emotion.
Kudos for remembering the perfect match…even including the cue for a drum.
Wait, she had a last name? And it was “all up in ya?”
Prophetic? Will Rachel take control, once she’s inside the beast?
Or, does her last name sound like, “I’ll a bin ya'”, the authors’ way of saying they’re gonna trash her character?
Eh… finally? I guess? At least something’s going down.
I just wish I cared more about this character. Rachel’s half a step above Sundar to me, at best. I mean, sure, condolences to all the Rachel fans out there, but… meh. :/
I will join in with practically everyone in existence, however, in saying, “… what the shulling shuck is taking you so long, Penk? For the love of Tectonicus, get your scrawny ass in gear.” >:(
Maybe Penk is in the “Well, we can let it eat a few of the other guys…” camp.
I don’t believe in love
I never have, I never will
I don’t believe in love
I’ll just pretend she never was real
I don’t believe in love
I never have, I never will
I don’t believe in love
It’s never worth the pain that you feel…..
OMG… Queensryche… one of their best songs…
I’m not in love, so don’t forget it
It’s just a silly phase I’m going through
And just because I call you up
Don’t get me wrong, don’t think you’ve got it made
I’m not in love, no, no
(It’s because)
Come, mister tally man: tally me banana;
lift six foot, seven foot, eight foot bunch.
Daylight come, and me wan’ go home.
A beautiful bunch of ripe banana
hide the deadly black tarantula.
Daylight come, and me wan’ go home.
10CC, I loved that song.
Log-off, log-off… JUST LOG OFF! You know, just in case something impossibly weird happens. Er, ‘like what’, you say? Oh, um… well I’m not sure you’d believe me if I told you. But please log-off… please?
that is some hells of roleplaying on rachel’s player’s part
oh jesus i did not need that av
Frigg goes super sayajin level 1 in 3…2…1….
Damnit, do not go gentle into that good night! Instead, get your glowy shit on and bash any incoming tentacles with rubble or something. But don’t just sit there and pray…
… unless, of course, the prayer is just to warm up more glowy shit. Maybe :P
Aw, Rachel, no. :(
super appropriate gravatar
I’m not sure this is for the Best…
I was wrong; I called it happening 2 pages ago :(
With that said; NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. I really liked Rachel even though she wasn’t nearly as developed as some of the others.
(Honestly, why couldn’t it have been Sundar… I barely know that guy. But I suppose that’s the point; it’s more emotional when it happens to character we know better, even if it’s only a little better)
I personally was curious when the other troll kid died, as it just suddenly seems to have happened.
Also people forget the troll champion has yet to re-enter the fight with his drum. :) He might save the day.
I think this is one of the most powerful pages in the whole comic, so far.
I can’t speak on that objectively, but I can tell you it was the most difficult page to write in the whole comic, so far.
If anything, the number of comments seems to speak to it’s power. I’m guessing most pages average somewhere around thirty comments. As of this post, there has been over a hundred comments!
I think our previous record was 300 something, but that was all the way back when we had the “big reveal.”
Ow, my heart
Nooooo, Rachel! You can’t die! E-merl will be so sad! T______T
Time for E-Merl to figure out how to reverse the link he’s got with the mage school and pull something out of hammerspace to delete that bastard with. Cantrip THIS, tentacles.
…except, he’s not there. Right. Carry on.
Not that you mention it, would E-Gurl’s force sphere thingy have worked against the tentacles? It’s worked against literally everything else so far, and physical contact seems to be required for de-rezzing. Shame he was elsewhere, being generally useless.
*Now that you mention it. Not not.
who’th there?
Thlapthtick jokethterth.
-_-
not cool not cool at all
Just registered so I could post and say…that was a good death.
NOOOO! Rachel, you WERE the Heart of All.
’bout time
At least the “real” Rachel is still alive in the “real” world.
But…but…plot armor…FTW? :(
Well, she doesn’t seem to be on the spoilerific Patreon banner, so I guess this death is for realz.
And what looks like a helmetless Wav IS included on the Patreon banner… and looks kinda like Best with an emo haircut… so…
And now, a year later, Wav isn’t on the banner any more.
Damnit Best… why do you keep getting yourself removed?
*Are you sure you want to release the character known as Rachel? This is permanent and cannot be undone.* *Yes* *No* (Tearfully selects Yes) *Rachel has been released. She will be forever missed and always loved.*
