Agreed. The best any fantasy comic can hope for is to make doing the right thing, the small moral victory, seem more impressive than the gaudy martial victory with its blood spray and its defeated foes. You might say this scene, with all the context the author has built behind it…

It’s weird. For a second I thought this was a Guilded Age comic. Then I realized this was the speech Naruto gave to Sasuke at the end of Shippuden. I gotta be honest, Sasuke was much better written in this new version. I thought Naruto was the blonde though.
They have all their limbs too, isn’t that crazy?
I have never seen past episode one of Naruto.
It’s just Bleach with an impossibly worse fashion sense.

The real gift of Axemas is the feels.
I no longer believe in destiny either. Nor do I believe in luck. Somebody else calls a thing that is done — luck. In reality luck is just preparation, experience, and understanding applied to a task. Anyone who calls the results of these 3 things ‘luck’, intentionally or not is belittling the effort that went into advancing those things for a person. Succes occurs when people who do the work to be prepared are able act on an opportunity.
Seriously would you offer an opportunity to someone unprepared to act on it?
This entire story is of people whose actions and attitudes which form their character proceed through a series of decision points.
Luck is seeing an opportunity that is not being offered and acting on it AND it being in your interest.

I agree, luck does not refer to someone making a decision for better. I would say, however, that from that individual’s POV, luck can describe the series of events, unrelated to them up until the opportunity is presented, that lead to the opportunity in question to be offered in the first place. Seemingly random events producing a positive effect. For example, you have your eye on a particular job position, but it’s filled almost all of the time. However, at one point, the individual who holds that position moves out of it for reasons totally unrelated to you, such as retirement, medical needs, or promotion. Now the opportunity has presented itself to you in a time where you are available to take it. That could be described as luck.
I hate to be That Semantics Guy but this thing you’re all describing is “Opportunism.” Luck still exists in any venue that employs random outcomes.

So, wait, not to change the subject, but . . . there are kobolds in Arkerra? Have we ever seen them? Are they represented in the beast races? Do they have a champion? That’d be adorable. :D
Kobolds have been present as early as chapter one but since they are incapable of speech/literacy, they are regarded as random monsters (Dragonkin, if you’re nasty).
Same as orcs. In this world, they are slaves and/ or gun fodder for adventurers. They don’t even have their own t-shirts.
Byron is a remarkable guy. I suspect most people (myself included), would not of tried nearly as hard as Byron did to mend bridges with Best. Probably would of marked Best off as a lost cause long ago.
Panel 3: Great, now tell him about your swamp, Shrek–er, I mean, BYRON.

I can’t help noticing how much the camera angles underline the changing emotional focus between the two characters in this scene — especially that mid-page panel. I’ve scanned down the page six or seven times and it gets better each time. Really well done.
Good catch. I remember Phil knows a thing or two about writing movie scripts. This makes me wonder whether he knows the analyses of Tony Zhou (Every frame a painting). Seeing Panels four and five the episode about the Coen Brothers springs to mind.
