Harkey’s gonna get a gem-ectomy!
No fair wages for fair maidens?
‘From fair maidens’ would be in keeping with the anti-aristocratic messages of the other signs. At least assuming a fairytale view of the term ‘fair maiden’ where anyone referred to as such turns out to be at least noble if not royal.
But in literal, realist terms, you’re right. In fact, it’s more likely to be used to address lower classes in real historical use, given that maiden and maid can be very much interchangeable.
I believe maiden technically meant “virgin” in those days. I guess I’m not sure about the etymology of “maid,” though.
Literally true. And by extentsion, to describe or address someone as maiden, is a courtesy or “honorific”.
From the French, Mademoiselle.
Indeed. Regarding the differences between maiden and maid, the two are partially synonymous. A maid can simply be a shorter form of a maiden. Alternatively, a maid can refer to servant, because it was assumed that only unmarried (and therefore, in theory, virgin) women would be employed. However, to avoid confusion, they were referred to as serving maids (or similar titles). Maid is simply the contraction of that, which occured after people simply started to assume that noble young ladies would be virgins, so it became redundant to call them maidens.
It was also old-fashioned.
“Unfair Maidens” would be a good name for a riot grrl band.
i guess, seeing that the name Iron Maiden is already taken….
I used to play bass for Unfair Maidens.
bottom left panel, looks like we’re in for another round of back stabbing undermining A-hole this year. on the up side, center panel, looks like gravy isn’t the last dwarf shamen left alive.
I think that may be a flashback. Recall that the Savasi did war with Gastonians before being forced into the desert.
And on another note, final panel seems to hint Byron might be undercover again…or converting.
Yeah, that was my first thought on that panel … *gasp* he’s restarted the Shamanic Order! But yeah, might just be a flashback. I guess if I want more dwarves, I’ll just have to go see The Hobbit again.
might be a flash back, might not. we were TOLD that all the shamens were killed off except for gravy. But we never saw the bodies. these guys could have been survivors.
But what Gravy told us about his death and being sent back backs up the last shaman thing.
If we get a Savasi Flashback, will our daring authors delve into the most dangerous of unknowns: DRAWING DWARVEN WOMEN?
on another thought, what if gravy finds other disillussioned dwarfs that want to join him and become new shamens.
just think about it. Shamen = New Jedi in this world
Those signs. I want more.
Fighters Vs. Aristocrats = Class Warfare…
That is the best pun I’ve seen yet.
a PC class vs a NPC class is no contest at all.
I believe this calls for a quote.
“Mano a mano, just you and me and my GUARDS!”
i am a long time D&D and pathfinder player. I know very well a (for example) a lvl 5 PC fighter can handle a lvl 5 aristcrat and 4 lvl 5 NPC warrior guards if flanking and feats are messed up.
Oh good, Mr. Iwatani looks happy!
That down right scares me.
dear makers of this comic,
thank you… i just spent all of last night reading from the beginning of this awesome tale, and it is now bookmarked so i can consume every new page as it comes.
welcome to the Alliance Jalek.
Ooooooh, I’m excited! It looks like Harky’s passing on the mantle, we’re seeing some unrest in Gastonia, we get to learn more about the Solates Mountains, and we get to learn moreabout the cultists? Sign me up! I eagerly await the new year.
First panel – That thumb doesn’t look like Harky’s.
Somebody else gonna lose a couple fingers?
Happy New Year, yeah sure… for what this page shows, it’s not gonna be *that* happy on the flip side, huh?
Good for us readers :)
Eat the rich!
is that a human in the cult?
I think thats everyone’s favourite former berserker!
Take another look, you can see a second human looking guy on the bottom row.
So does that mean thats a conflict ruby?
Last Panel:
Guilded Age meets Assassins Creed
This can’t help but end well.
And by well I mean bloodily.
Combine Rachel’s gift of mini-axes, with Gnomish technology and Syr’Nj’s SCIENCE…create the Hidden Axe-blade!
3rd Panel: Gravedust, the early years.
