AAaA E-Merl 2
Sam from Texas should be pleased: E-Merl would not be this frank about his abilities with anyone else, except possibly Rachel. Not only is he normally self-conscious about his limitations, but he’s got a performer’s sense of misdirection, illusion, and mystique. That’s one thing Arkerran magic and Terran magic have in common.
One thing I’m sorry we didn’t have time to do is to explore some other spellcasting items that worked similarly, just to better root E-Merl in his own tradition of wizardry. There’s got to be a false fingernail you can touch to your tongue to shoot water, or a headband with a painted-on third eye you can don to see beyond sight.
Remember what he says here about his relationship with his hat; it will be important later for reasons.
This still kinda feels like he’s downplaying his own abilities. If all it took was to blow on the ring, then anyone could use it, and it’d go off anytime the weather’s getting a bit more lively, or during horse rides … There must still be a good deal of skill required from the caster, but E-Merl isn’t the type to dwell on that, I suppose.
Yes, and I do like it. It’s the usual E-Merl, but his explanation gives us (more) insight to know he’s not talentless. Not everyone can make these “instruments” of his sing. He’s not great enough to free style and needs his “music sheets” but he’s still producing music, and not everyone can do that. Not that E-Merl ever gives himself much credit…
Rankin-Bass holiday cartoons suck chunks.
One idjit’s opinion.
