Annotated 10-14
I did a version of this page when Phil was out of touch: Phil revised a lot of it but kept the bit I was really, really proud of: “easy as E minor.” It’s not only alliterative but a good simile: E minor is one of the easiest to learn. Musical knowledge is not one of my strengths, so I can’t rattle off stuff like that, but this one came out sparkling.
Our original concept would’ve had the team get lost in the hall of mirrors almost immediately, without this more head-on sort of confrontation. The golems were a great idea of Phil’s, though, and very targeted to John’s Robotech experience, especially when we changed them from fireball-emitters to lightning-channelers.
The final panel here, full as it was of the charming fun we were trying to deliver above all else, formed the basis for our earliest poster and postcard design. Byron and Syr’Nj’s quiet moment in the desert a few pages earlier would also become a postcard design, but not until we needed to expand our postcard offerings to six.
It’s funny you say Robotech. My first thought was the X-Men’s Sentinels.
I can see that. Except for lacking the gaudy purple color scheme, these guardian golems make great X-men Sentinels.
-Energy Blasts from their palms: Check
-Shouting Stilted Orders as they Attack: Check
-Flesh color tone only on their faces: Check
I bet they even had thrusters in the soles of their ‘boots’, but sadly not of much use in enclosed spaces.
Whereas I often flash back to how upset I was that the comic adaptation of The Sentinels was canceled. The Waltrips did great work on those books.
Thank you, Kensou. We enjoyed working on Robotech for as long as we were able, and are very proud of what we accomplished. Although we didn’t get to finish the story ourselves, Robotech continued. It’s now in the hands of Titan Comics, and they were gracious enough to allow us to do a few guest covers and publish some reprints too!

I like how much Bryon stands out in the third panel. He’s the only one looking down, while everyone else is looking up and getting ready.
In my head, I always pronounced what the golem is saying in a French accent. Was that intended? Because I never got any French vibes from the sky elves otherwise.
I felt the same thing! The word “allandant” does have a French translation (“going”) and “thillieu” looks as if it OUGHT to be French, but the rest has no meaning I can assign, and I’m pretty sure Phil was just mashing together syllables that sounded foreign.
