Around the time we did this scene, Phil was going through a breakup and I was realizing the woman I was pursuing was never going to be ready for a commitment beyond dance classes. This didn’t make us any more cynical about Byr’Nj… if anything, it was nice to escape by thinking about a couple who actually had a shot at working, even given Byron’s enormous problems.

I’m not saying Best cares that much about pulling Byron a couple of feet out of his sinkhole of depression, but you have to admit that Byron’s current frame of mind responds a bit more to the person who’s not telling him he’s a good soul. Even so, Syr’Nj’s encouraging words will have a longer-term impact.
