Annotated 4-7
Phil invented the theatrical, story-loving pirate captain, and I’m the one who assigned him a name that rhymed with another pirate captain showboater, Don Karnage. For those who don’t know, Don was a regular antagonist in Tale Spin in the late days of my youth, and recently reappeared, looking a bit more harmless, on the new DuckTales. (I think there was some other foreshadowing-related reason I wanted to invoke him, but right now, I just can’t think what it could have possibly been…)
“One cannot serve both God and Mammon” –The Bible, Luke 16
“In that case, I guess we’re praying to Mammon now” –The Iwatanis
I feel like we missed a comedic opportunity by not somehow conveying the crew’s reaction to von Carnaj’s speech here. At least SOME of them had to be into this for von Carnaj to have staged a successful coup, but others are probably beginning to have doubts about how happy the captain is to be battling Best.
I just noticed the carving on Gravedust’s bow. Has it significance, or is it purely ornamental/utilitarian?
I was literally about to snark about Don Carnage, but then ya gotta go and take the wind outta my sails…like a ship in a cave!
The word “snark” is very apt here, since Von Carnaj has obviously read Lewis Carroll:
“O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!” He chortled in his joy.
Tale Spin and Alice in the same page. Where else ya gonna get quality classical references like those?
The Iwatanis are more like Mammon’s golfing buddies than worshippers per se.
Panels 5 and 6 were a bit confusing for me. Took me awhile to realize that it was a scene transition and not the room that Gravey & Byron were looking into.
I completely agree. That tripped me up this pass through as well.
why is Taro noted as being here?
That’s him speaking in panel 5.
ah I see. Yeah that panel swap really got me.
Oh, dear Lord, Don Carnage. :D I’m a little ashamed I didn’t catch that reference the first time through.
