Young boys are a popular sacrificial item. I think they count both as a lamb and a virgin.

Its a sign of good writing that the ‘bad guys’ have moments like this. It means that they are fully fleshed characters instead of caricatures. They are human, have faults and virtues just like the rest. My compliments go out for moments like this.

You must be brave, son. Do not be afraid at all to be killed in nasty ways; to be mashed to a pulp, or your eyes gouged out, or your kneecaps split, or your heart cut out, your liver removed, your bowels unplugged, your nostrils raped, your pen-

I sure hope that if he’s the best cultist he pay it forward and teach some of the newer brothers. Maybe around a camp fire with a rousing song.

“Then, shortly after receiving a second, more disturbing prophecy, he fell into a magickal vortex, and is presumed dead.”
I’m chekhov’s gunning the presumed dead part.

If that is Best (and i hope it is), he just might be a deep double agent that is working for the peace keepers/alliance some how. again, if that is Best, he should have made a major character development.

Agreed, unless the intent was “You’ll have to accomplish enough things that someday you get to the point of looking down the abyss”. Which seems a little out of place, whereas “You’ll have to *be* brave enough” makes a lot more sense in the context, in my opinion.

Bah. I bet if push comes to shove- if Iwatani must make a choice between his love for his son and more power- he’d easily give up his son.

    • Loki

I disagree. His Grace seems to quite value his son.
As I interpret it, I think His Grace feels that his son is the future of power for House Iwatani, and/or himself (after his death); to get rid of his son would be to lose all of that future power, all of that future potential for power.

That’s in the future, for when Iwatani is old and dying.

What if the choice is placed before him in the present, while he’s still somewhat young and strong?

More precisely, is it about his legacy or is it just about him?

So far, it’s the cult that needs to prove their penchant for destructive chaos to him.

Anyway, i’m getting some Littlefinger vibes from Iwatani, like he is manipulating all the sides with the exact dose of intrigue to cause them to jump at each other throats. Maybe well discover he is the largest partner of Don Gobligno, and he gave them the war machine designs?
