Google “triskelion”. It’s no more swastika-like than a regular cross (+) is for example. It’s a case of something being so prominent that one sees it everywhere, kinda like penises.

That’s a fair point, but the overall design of the banner, black in white in red, makes it a bit more likely to have been intentionally similar.

I agree with BeefPot, although Jean Luc does have a good point about the shape basically being a triskelion. So I see this more as a triskelion-based cult symbol (which should be a totally legit reference — the triskelion is a pretty common part/basis of religious symbols especially in Celtic faiths) that hints at the Nazi swastika symbol for effect, instead of it being a swastika with one of its legs lopped off and stylized with more curvature.

        randomdude
        April 4, 2013, 12:20 pm | # | Reply

technically, I think triskelions are sort of a type of swastika. The germans weren’t the first to use swastikas, they just ruined them for everyone else. Kinda like Hitler ruined the toothbrush mustache. The Sicilian emblem is still a triskelion of legs with Medusa’s head in the center. I’m told the three legs represent Sicily’s three seasons.

Yes, that too. I wouldn’t say the triskelion is a type of swastika, but the symbols typically have common roots, so they are family (in some cultures only one of the two exists or is commonly used, in others both are used along with others of the family and their variations).

The coat of arms of the Isle of Man is a triskelion of legs. It represents an old north celtic legend of a hero who was really fast. He didn’t actually have three legs, the idea was that he ran as if he did.
