I think GD’s reaction is genuine. He may very well have been a jovial fellow before the mystics’ downfall and the GD we know may merely be an embittered version of his previous self.

Let’s go back even further: see Chapter 21, Pages 16 and 17.

Gravedust is one of the few survivors of the Battle of the Burning Heels, where as a boy he basically killed his way out. Maybe that’s what made him all serious (though as Chapter 21 Page 17 points out, we most certainly don’t have his full backstory yet).

So I still like your interpretation Jean-Luc, I’m just setting his turning point at an even earlier date.

@biggmac: Agreed, it’s great to see that his character possesses this range of emotions :)

Come to think of it, the savasi mystic’s names remind of the old rescue heroes.

Anyone remember those? Rocky Canyon, Billy Blazes?

Ah yes. Cliff Rockslide, Gravedust Deserthammer, Snowpeak Avalanche, Cinderblock Stonecutter, Ember Firehazard.
Less well known are Scumfoot Sewerliver, Hemmroid Throbbinitcher, and Phlegmsnot Nasalhair (“Booger” to his friends).

    Three things:
-Aww, Friggie looks so cute in panel 2!
-It’s obvious that Frigg is SO not a vegan.
-Broiled desert moss? Deep fry it instead, and serve with a chicken fried steak with cream gravy – now that, I’d eat.

I’m sure broiled desert moss would be delicious, with a bit of olive oil and garlic. Because then it’d taste like olive oil and garlic.

I really like this page. It sort of shows how alone and sad Gravy has been this whole time if you think about it. He was probably feeling, well, like the last of his kind and more then a little survivor’s guilt, to say nothing of always a fish out of water. I like seeing his side of him shine out as though he found something to really energize himself with for probably the first time in a long time.
I like seeing this humanity in him that stems not from the more rational side, but merely a joyful emotional one. Not that Grave isn’t awesome as he is, but it will be nice to see him develop as a character when it is rarer for characters like him to get that, except the usual “stick in mud loosens up” story. This feels more like it was always a part of him showing itself for once.

Oh. Here I thought he just had subdued mannerisms. Looking like he was genuinely miserable on account of all his friends being dead. Hope the group gets to bring a bit more of this out of him over time.

Unless I’m reading that wrong… Does Gravedust wants to get laid and spawn an entirely new line of baby mystic dwarves?

It’s probably more along the lines of *training* a new line of mystics, rather than siring them.
