When bad people fuck up being bad, the result can be good. So, it’s possible to be a fuck up and a good person.

You can spend decades building your career / reputation / life, and one F-up can destroy it all in seconds.
Have sweet dreams mulling over that thought.

Actually, I find it kind of reassuring that even the people you look up to probably still have the little voice saying “Am I doing it right? Am I doing it right? Oh, man, I don’t know what I’m doing, I’m probably about to mess up everything.” It puts us all on a more equal footing.

But I guess different people take different lessons from that idea…

What you just said reminds me of a Life’s Lesson that I got from the video game, Tetris; successes disappear, failures accumulate.

…At this point in my life, I’ve only got one or two more empty rows at the top of my screen…

It’s the best people that worry about how good they are at something. Those are the people that continue to self-improve in order to avoid circumstance and tend to be the best.

Those who are confident they’re great at something inevitably run into surprises when they run into something they do not recognize.

Reminds me of what Jadzea Dax would reply when asked how far down her spots went.

Fr’nj is finally returning to the natural state of sentient life. IMHO, anyone who isn’t questioning themselves is in danger of becoming a blind zealot. Questions lead to answers, which lead to progress.

The thing is, she’s questionning herself about whether she should have saved her sis’ life by harming another, or letting it go. But that mentality is almost nothin but a failed one, in times of war.

She says she wants to be a pacifist, but a warring country has no need for pacifists.

Okay, being a Pacifist does not mean you can not, or will not, fight, it just means you want to resolve things peacefully if possible rather than going in and knocking heads off straight off the bat

Some pacifists would disagree with that, such as pacifists in WW1 and WW2. Some served by choosing to take completely noncombatant roles but otherwise helped in the military effort. A fewer bunch refused to have anything to do at all with the wars, such as Britain’s conscientious objectors in WW1. They morally could not fight in any way and in actuality did not. The definition you presented is just one specific possible form of it and cannot be used as a general term to cover all of it.

        July 7, 2014, 11:42 am | # | Reply

What’s more, I’d say that definition could be stretched to include all of the Peacemakers (okay, except Frigg) and possibly even folks like Penk and Iwatani. Not fighting when you don’t have to is just good sense. And people like Bert, who are not fighting Cultists right now but because they can’t, not because they don’t want to… I don’t really count them either. To be a pacifist in wartime and for that label to really mean something to others, I think you have to remain nonviolent even when it’s highly inconvenient.

Then, being a pacifist in wartime is the worst position?

It wasn’t just Britain who had Conscientious Objectors, and if you believe they didn’t end up on the front line you have been lied to: many still were forced to go and tortured by their own people, if not executed for it

Didn’t say that was the only definition, just pointing out that some still do fight, because they see no alternative (and they understand that if they don’t, people they care about will die, or worse)

From experience, most of the time, if you’re trying to do what you believe is right and it’s easy, chances are you’re doing it wrong.
