It’s just unfortunate he didn’t twig on to it sooner and try to do something about the root cause of the problem. Then they might have been forced to leaf him where he was.
That tends to be it, fire you when you are far enough from company property to do any damage, or otherwise have people who can prevent you from doing said damage escort you from the premises.
Yeah, it sucks and it has horrible timing, but at the very least they’re not trying to say he’s partly responsible for supporting the adventurers in the first place, which is where I thought they were going.
From what I understand this is pretty normal regardless of circumstances. Gastonia is a mercantile republic similar to old Italian city-states. It’s a pragmatic meritocracy and the amount of power you have is proportional to the amount of resources (not necessarily of the material kind) you can contribute.
It’s the rule of merchants, craftsmen and information dealers as opposed to inherited aristocrats or democratically elected officials. For all his legal bearing and political scheming Iwatani is basically a farmer, farming is what his wealth and power are based on.
In any case that’s why “good guys” like Ardaic and Jarvis are cool with this, it’s just standard procedure.
But isn’t the whole lumber arrangement with the wood elves mainly because of the war? Once the war’s over, their arrangement might end. That would mean kicking this guy out is kind of premature.
Yea…I thought Iwatani was going to take over lumber but they point out here that Syr’nj was basically already in control of the majority of Gastonia’s lumber supply for a while without even trying.
Does Don Pardo get some lovely parting gifts? A case of Turtle Wax and a lifetime supply of Rice-A-Roni, “The [DING*DING] San Francisco treat”? Am I the only one old enough to appreciate this?
Interesting power play. While the wood elves have surpassed Pardo’s house in lumber protection it is due war necessity. Once the war is over they would not be so generous given their reverence for trees, but of course if that were to happen then they would have the justification to expel Syr’ng and bring back Pardo. This now looks like a scheme to entangle her and wood elves into Gastonian politics.
Okay I’m finding it a bit weird that every single head of house (well except the head for the Sky elves) has their hands behind their back in the same pose… it’s a bit weird looking and actually kind of creepy.
And GOD, the respective perspective of characters in this whole scene is sooooo weird if you pay close attention to it.
Like they are all running around and changing plases all the time. Ol teleporting chaotically.
I’m not sure if there’s any significance here, but I recall the name Don Pardo as being a popular voice-over announcer on quite a few TV game shows 3 or 4 of decades ago. With this page, I just can’t keep this image out of my mind:
Bob Barker: “Okay Don, tell our contestant what they’ve won.”
Don Pardo, the voice-over: “Very well Bob. Our contestant has won an all-expense paid…What?…What are you doing?…Let go of me…Stop that. (voice begins to fade, as if moving away from the microphone) I’ll sue you!…Let go!” (sound of a door closing)
Wait… Do they even know that the Hall of Houses is actually the set for Big Brother: Gastonia?
The closeups of each of the Heads, giving their justifications for voting to evict Pardo, were a pretty big clue. But, I guess NPCs don’t get to watch cutscenes like player characters do.
I almost feel sorry for them. Their lives are like love children of Big Brother and The Truman Show.
The Devil Wears Pardo.
I didn’t expect they’d kick Pardo out for milling about.
The Hall of Houses don’t provide much lumber support.
We all knew they wood start with the one who tried to branch out to non-humans.
It’s just unfortunate he didn’t twig on to it sooner and try to do something about the root cause of the problem. Then they might have been forced to leaf him where he was.
The heads of the houses seem to not be in the wood to let him stick arround anymore.
They’re gonna get board when he leaves.
He was just sapping their strength
It looks like those fine, well armed gentlemen are willing to pull Pardo’s weight for him.
Well, at least they’re not framing him or anything…
Still worrisome that they had guards drag him out.
Nah, that’s standard procedure when surprise-firing somebody.
Is it? I’ve been surprise-fired a few times and nobody ever called security on me.
Granted, they waited until I was at home to fire me, so…
That tends to be it, fire you when you are far enough from company property to do any damage, or otherwise have people who can prevent you from doing said damage escort you from the premises.
Somehow, this hurts even worse.
Yeah, it sucks and it has horrible timing, but at the very least they’re not trying to say he’s partly responsible for supporting the adventurers in the first place, which is where I thought they were going.
Not yet, at least.
Jarvis! You’ve fallen to the dark side!
Eh, he’s always been there. Sort of.

Ah Jarvis and the arch-mage want to supplant him with Syr’nj.
Doesn’t she already have a seat?
She does.
Yea, but her duties made Pardo’s redundant.
Yea…I thought Iwatani was going to take over lumber but they point out here that Syr’nj was basically already in control of the majority of Gastonia’s lumber supply for a while without even trying.
“Our small council grows smaller…”
“Not small enough.”
And then there was four…
I find it p interesting how they are all standing with the same posture.
All those sticks up their backsides tends to have that effect.
The lumber shortage should fix that.
I’ve heard that, in politics, you don’t want to show your hand too soon.
But the elf is showing his hands.
Does Don Pardo get some lovely parting gifts? A case of Turtle Wax and a lifetime supply of Rice-A-Roni, “The [DING*DING] San Francisco treat”? Am I the only one old enough to appreciate this?
I am with you because I am old and creaky as well.
Screw that. Give me the Round Up tune on my way out ” MEAT ITS WHATS FOR DINNER “
Don’t forget the exciting home version of “Guilded Age: The Board Game!”*
*board not included due to lumber shortage.
At last! Someone finally said,
“Thank you, Don Pardo!”
I’ve been waiting for that since he was introduced…
I have thought of this every single time Pardo shows up. I feel a great relief that somebody explicitly brought it up.
Interesting power play. While the wood elves have surpassed Pardo’s house in lumber protection it is due war necessity. … … …I just realized… … …Don Pardo…voiceover guy for almost everything on tv from the 70s to 90s.
“Thank you, Don Pardo!”
Yup.
Never noticed how BLUE that room is before….
Okay I’m finding it a bit weird that every single head of house (well except the head for the Sky elves) has their hands behind their back in the same pose… it’s a bit weird looking and actually kind of creepy.
Almost like they were all in on it…
Well that does seem to be the case considering how they all spoke a part of that speech… (again except for the Sky Elf head)
In this Hall we only have room for those who have wood for war!
And GOD, the respective perspective of characters in this whole scene is sooooo weird if you pay close attention to it.

So, he announced his own jeopardy?
