No thank you, Baron Underbeit gave me some as a parting gift once. Interesting warning coming from Caneghem. Either he has a separate conspiracy in the works or this is another way to convince Reynolds to avoid Gastonian politics in case he does not trust Ardaic.
I’d say Caneghem slammed the portal closed out of frustration that Reynolds totally missed Ardaic’s warning that his life is in danger. Reynolds was so focused on his dangerous machines of war, that he failed to notice that he’s been targeted by the machinations of politics.
Thankfully, Reynolds has finally donned the appropriate “Oh… Oh, crap!” face.
I think Ardaic’s single motivation has always been to do what is truly best for Gastonia, no matter what. Right now, that is to prevent a massacre in Gnometown, and to prevent Reynolds’ permanent removal from the Hall of Houses. He suggested Reynolds take a sabbatical, in hopes of turning the Heads of Houses attention away from Reynolds and Gnometown.
Ardaic doesn’t want the Heads to manipulate things to the point that protecting the Gnomes is no longer in Gastonia’s best interests.
Well… I wouldn’t look down on him for it. Don’t want to be short with people, you know. Comes across as high and mighty, when we’d rather be walking talk.
Was thinking yesterday two reasons to nudge someone into a leave of absence you either A) Want them out of the way or B) Want them out of HARMS way…might be wrong but Ardaic could be doing this as a favor to him just like Caneghem is doing since he seems savvy enough to read the way the wind is blowing, but morally upright enough to want to do actual good in the long run.
That was pretty much what I was thinking myself (with the post to prove it) – Ardaic and Caneghem’s motives may not be to sideline Reynolds but to preserve him.
I had the same thought, Ardaic’s proved himself to be less… malicious towards the “lesser” races of Gastonia, wouldn’t be surprised if him and Jarvis are trying to keep as many decent Heads around as there are. So, like, three of them
Perhaps, but I’d note that Caneghem closed that portal pretty forcefully to keep Ardaic from hearing him warn Reynolds. So I’m thinking Ardaic is column A, and Caneghem is column B.
This was my feeling as well. Check out Cagenham’s aside in panel one. He’s all like “Don’t even think I don’t see what you’re trying to pull here, but I’m not dumb enough to make scene when I know you’re already looking for an excuse to oust me next”.
Tinfoil hat theory time: Caneghem is helping to remove the non-racist and non-human council members because he plans on assassinating the rest and doesn’t want the good ones caught in the crossfire. Why else would cynical Cenghem think that would eventually be safe for Reynolds to return unless he knows for a fact that it will? ;)
That would be really effective, actually. Caneghem is probably the most physically dangerous council member, and with that admiral out of the way Jarvis has been in full control of the military for some while now. Between using the portals to move troops and agents and whatever destructive magic the sky elves have available there’s probably a dozen different ways that they could cooperate to kill everybody in a room.
And to their targets it would be indistinguishable from an opportunity to dispose of political enemies right up until the critical moment.
The problem with this theory is that it doesn’t require Caneghem to do anything this complicated. Unless he’s planning on slowly poisoning the punch bowls at council meetings he could have taken out the other councilors at any time (assuming he’s actually capable of doing so). Heck, even if he had nothing more complicated than a magical suicide bomb or portal to the sun he could have used it two strips ago, the moment Pardo left the room and he was alone with his co-conspirators. It’s most likely that he’s either just trying to use the others for his own ends or thinks that their take-over is inevitable and is willing to turn quisling for the good of his people (and himself, of course).
I was wondering when that guy was going to say anything. Or matter. In any way.
Its the quiet ones you have to watch out for.
There is no character in today’s comic that your statement could reasonably apply to.
Man that Ardaic, just taking so long to get involved in the plot.
No thanks, Caneghem. I prefer Tiger Balm.

Ohh! Tiger ‘BOMB’!
I’d say Caneghem slammed the portal closed out of frustration that Reynolds totally missed Ardaic’s warning that his life is in danger. Reynolds was so focused on his dangerous machines of war, that he failed to notice that he’s been targeted by the machinations of politics.

Icy-Hot winds. Much more powerful – and odorous – than the arthritis ointment of the same name.
Dang! Ishmael beat me to the pun!
Well done, sir.
That is the most emotion I’ve seen on Caneghem’s face, I think…
And asking Reynolds to do that much is a bit of a tall order (late pun is late)
Well… I wouldn’t look down on him for it. Don’t want to be short with people, you know. Comes across as high and mighty, when we’d rather be walking talk.
One doesn’t speak of Dean Reynolds like that more than once, lest they find out why his enemies call him the Dreaded Microaggression.
Though, that warning might help him clear what little over-head is left with the war funding.
Don’t talk down to short people…Unless you’re wearing a very sturdy scrotum cup. They might not be “above the idea” of immediate retaliation.
An important concern, especially if Reynolds is wearing the goggles from panel two when he headbutts you.
I’ve been outpunned, but I’ll have the laugh, kind of like Brother Tom!
Yes, and it’s terrifying. I’m not even going to bother with a pun.
The winds of magic are whimsical today…also I’m high.
You too?
Well no, not really. Never been high in my life…or drunk, or even tipsy. But “I’m high” jokes are always funny, amirite?
Watchoo talkin about?
Underhanded, Captain.
Caffeine. Lightly perfumed with bergamot oil. Hot.
Some cinnamon too if I’m being extra naughty.
You cad!
You’re avatar’s reaction is…ironically appropriate with your exclamation.
There are still people out there who have never experienced it? … Crazy. Just crazy. You have no idea what you’re missing.
A little advice on the down-low.
So what game is Caneghem playing?
Tavernstone: Heroes of Arkerra. That card game’s on everything now, even magic portals.
That’s Caneghem’s ‘MOTHERFUCKERS DONT EVEN KNOW’ face.
A little of column A, a little of column B.
That was pretty much what I was thinking myself (with the post to prove it) – Ardaic and Caneghem’s motives may not be to sideline Reynolds but to preserve him.

Aaaaand I misspelled his name.
It’s alkso entirely possible that each of them is column B, but suspects the other of being column A…
Awww, he really DOES care!
the face of the skyelf itself is enough to scare you into agreeing i swear
Hey, they’re getting ready for a new expansion! Time to shake up the story and move it on from the climatic raids of the last expansion.
ARGH THEY NERFED MY CLASS!!
That avatar fits perfectly with your comment XD
Never trust an elf!
icy and hot winds…comes off like confirmation of competing conspiracies after the cold portal comment
Delegation? Why not get some other gnome to go to the House meetings?
No non-humans allowed.
Thrusting an unprepared gnome into what is shaping up to be volatile political upheaval during a war for survival.
That wouldn’t end well.
Whatever you say, Christopher Lee!

Canegham clenching his fist to close the portal. Great touch.
Kyahaha, that alt text.
