I’m the opinion that Harky will win and kill Penk. It seems the tradition is a fight to the death, and the trollish values might be more important to them than getting what they really want (their hero/protege respectively to join their side). Harky is a more experienced combatant. Also the story does fall together a little to tidily if Penk wins.
Harky no longer has the power of tectonicus within him though, and it’s implied that he’s a bit past his prime.
No need to worry about perfect story, don’t forget HR and the Cultists are still around (though HR is not in this world). There’s so many things that can go wrong still
Twist: Harky wins, kills Penk, but goes through with Penk’s plan anyway.
My fictional money is on Penk somehow surviving, though. How it happens and what happens from there is up in the air as far as I care. This right there? Unintentional flair. I swear.
We’re heading into the endgame, so the fact that Penk winning allows things to begin tying up neatly – or, more accurately, that Harkey winning actually puts the protagonists back to square 1, maybe knocking them off the board entirely – is actually an argument for Penk winning, from a narrative POV.
I’m going on the theory that Tectonicus is actually a huge bro and finds words to be an acceptable method of resolving conflict, that it is in fact a very manly expression of defiance. He sees common brotherhood in all of trolldom and will descend to have them shake hands and hug.
So is the drum a magical offhand that just gives stats and maybe has a cooldown use of some kind like a sonic boom? Or is it like a shield or some kind of legit offhand weapon like some kind of special mace class weapon? Anyone know the id number on it so I can look it up on wowhead?
Fight, they told me, pa-rum-pa-pum-pum
I must fight the big boss, pa-rum-pa-pum-pum
And if I suffer loss, pa-rum-pa-pum-pum
They’ll use my guts for floss, pa-rum-pa-pum-pum, rum-pa-pum-pum, rum-pa-pum-pum
He’s got deadly spear, pa-rum-pa-pum-pum
I’ve got a drum.
I think the coolest move will be if Penk, instead of aiming the mace at Harky, will slam the drum blasting him off with a wave ofsound and fire. Considering Harky’s long reach with the spear it even makes tactical sense to dazzle him before coming closer for a blow.
OK, two questions:
1) Why is there suddenly an enormous moon?
2) What just landed on Harky’s spear — the Great Bird of the Galaxy or something?
(If that’s supposed to be glowering Techtonicus, I’m not seeing it.)
1) I think this is just a Cool Fight Scene Background, not what a spectator would actually see from that point of view.
2) It is indeed supposed to be Tectonicus. The “wings” on the spear are his nostrils, the eight smaller thingies are his eyes. But again, I think this is symbolic, i.e. “Tectonicus is watching” rather than “Tectonicus is clearly visible to everyone”.
Man, I’m sure this will be an epic fight to watch.
But to my eyes this is the two warriors leaping/charging at each other dramatically head-on for the initial epic blow, and if that were the case, then the reach of that spear makes the fight already over.
…unless that drum actually doubles as a functional shield that can deflect the spear and create an opening for Penk’s mace to land a hit.
Meanwhile, these are both regenerating trolls. So I am now reminded of a certain comic about dueling paladins. It makes Monopoly games look short.
Who’s ready for a scene transition back to sepia world?!
They better fucking not!
Gold Star. ;-p
Well, now there’s no way he’s going to get one.
Well, your avatar is at least appropriate for those particular comments (at the time of this comment).
Oh dear. Now Phil can’t Gold Star himself.
I’d jump at the chance of a transition.
I live in a post-transition society.
I live in a post-exposition society, myself.
i post-live in a post-society network, by proxy. rather like embodying an avatar stuck in a … wait a minute.
This is a Post.
I saw a ghost sitting on your post, eating toast.
You’re the most! (but not the Best!)
Ceci n’est pas une pMost.
AUGH!
XD
How about a vacation week for the Word-Wranglers and the Illustrious Illustrators, and this fight scene be continued non-canon by Oglaf? Heh heh heh…
I see they both trained at the Samurai Jack School of Martial Arts.
Oh man. Did you hear about the series coming back?

Manga fight! Panel 2 sound effects: SCHRINNNNG! SCHRINNNNNG!
Doesn’t matter if you win or lose as long as you look badass doing so. *intent stare toward Iver*
No fly. Jump good.
You mean how they jump vertically and then impart horizontal momentum while in the air?
And then they both realized that they forgot to take fall damage reduction perks.
That’s why their god is watching from the moon, to provide divine intervention against the falling damage.
TROLLS MUST SURVIVE.
Calling it, Harky will have the opening for the killing blow and not take it to throw the fight.
“Fly me to the moon” starts playing in the background
Am mentally workshopping Two Troll Moon T-Shirts.
In bookshops next week: How The Troll Jumped Over The Moon
Muzak version, played on a cheap keyboard with pre-programmed bossa nova beat.

MY guess? Harkey throws the fight!

And they still have to deal with Taro and the new nation of Iwatania.
When Brother Homon returns, he will have many buffs. He may even have cheat codes.

Looking at the second panel the drum gives +7 to Extreme Stooling.
Whereas Harky takes two colace a day to prevent Extreme Stooling.

WELL DONE.
:D
It seems that Penk is the one who enjoys the favor of Tectonicus, since only his weapon is on fire…
He’s just a nancy-pamby magical type who doesn’t do his own fighting.
Hey Frigg, I’m looking at you.
Just going to leave this here.
Was thinking something much more inappropriate.

N-no. This would be better:

SO. MUCH. WIN!
What will happen next?!?!
Find out in… Guilded Age Z!!!!!
Only available in certain regions. $5.99 per update.
Only if we get the brilliant and hilarious unofficial translation “Guilded Age Z Abridged”.
Love that last panel. So anime it hurts in a good way. :D
“What’s happening?”
“I don’t know! I can’t see through the speed lines!”
They jumped straight up you say?
Well gosh… now we must wait for them to land before we start the fight.
It’s just a mace, and it’s on fire.
This is epic.
“Red sun
Red sun over paradise…”
Hey wait a second, bards can’t normally jump as high as dragoons.
Trust me, in 5th Edition, Bards can do damn near anything if they try hard enough.
Check out the final panel of Chapter 28, page 27. Looks like Tectonicus is taking an interest in the conflict here.

It’s Tectonicus’s horns and eyes.

Really!? Everyone forgot the first time Harky pulled this move!

Wow!! What a gorgeous, intense page.
