Those trolls are obviously approvingly intrigued by a church with the main credo of defiance.
      No wonder they help building.
But, why are all disciples human?

Might perhaps be that the power is exclusive to humans? Or, perhaps the Trolls are also disciples, but also happen to be the better builders.

And you still haven’t, if the first panel is anything to go by. Those scissor blades came from the emblem on her robe, which is why they didn’t need to cross each other in order to snip the skeleton’s neck. If they’d been radiating from discreet sections of her chest, the discrete points of rotation would necessitate a cross in order to meet. Since that wasn’t the case, as seen in the third panel, we can safely conclude that the light was coming from her solar plexus.

Indoor toilets go WAY back. Usually you were going directly into a running sewer sluice, or down a long shaft to an outdoor location; but you can totally do that with a roof.

I say “usually” because the Indus Valley civilization developed flush toilets (albeit flushed manually, by pouring water directly in the cistern) somewhere in the 2500-3000 BCE range. A rare verified case of long-lost ancient technology finally rediscovered millennia later!

Hey, I’ll defend my god-given right to indoor toilets tooth and nail… but it’s neither a solution nor a counter to the universal concept of human misery. The lich says “You’ve no jurisdiction over me because the night is dark and full of terrors”, and she responds “Well at least I don’t shit in the woods, so there.”

Heh. I like that. But I don’t think that was the point she was driving at. to me, it came off more like this…

Lich: “It’s a dog eat dog world. Everyone is out for themselves”
Initiate: “The world we have couldn’t exist with out cooperation. And without cooperation, we don’t have indoor toilets.”

Granted, she probably could use a better example.

He’s definitely saying that it’s every man for himself while she’s pointing how much progress has been made through unity, using a hint of comedy. Using the bastion of humanity, the unthinkable, the culmination of the world’s knowledge, the indoor toilet.

If the lich were real an not just E-Gurl’s illusion, he’d probably point out that the cultists were highly cooperative in their search for universal annihilation. Also Gastonians in their hegemonic oppression. The ability of intelligent beings to cooperate does nothing to deny their basic cruelty and selfishness – we cooperate when it furthers our goals. Those goals are often extremely shitty and self-serving.

I can’t entirely agree. The ability of intelligent beings to cooperate at least demonstrates that they’re willing to put their selfish impulses on hold long enough to achieve something together. Sure, selfishness continues to exist in a shared society on every level, but to say we’re nothing more than that denies the evidence.

The lich’s speech is a version of the doubts that I (and I suspect a lot of people) grapple with every day, but ultimately his world-view is more limited than Daisy’s. He doesn’t believe robust good really exists (“fear is all you are”), whereas Daisy knows of the existence of robust good and evil. If she didn’t know there was evil in the world, she wouldn’t be here.

To regard group behaviour as non-selfish is a grave misunderstanding. The notion of self operates on multiple levels, from the median will of the collective unconscious to the physically self-serving influence of genes.

To even regard selfishness as undesirable is collectivist propaganda. As though submitting oneself to be a mere cell in a larger self-serving amoeboid organism (competing against other like-structured collectives) were any more noble a goal than being a lone individual (made up of cells, even so). Being bigger doesn’t make it better. And “I like this” doesn’t magically become “robust good” just because multiple people agree on it.

All this moral nonsense is just a farcical excuse for people doing what people (and life in general) do anyway: Making their surroundings more like themselves. To consume and assimilate is the nature of life. The only other option is destruction of the self, by one’s own hands or the consumption of others.

SotiCoto, more than anything, I find it faintly amazing to have this discussion more than a year after the series ended. It’s one thing when you show up late to complain about how much others like wordplay, but when you start going after some of my core ethics and calling them “farcical, moral nonsense,” well.

it’s kind of wild that you think I’m endorsing becoming a “mere cell” in a scene featuring Frigg and E-Merl (two people whom nobody has ever accused of being mindless lockstep conformists) bringing up a new generation of heroes. God knows their own backgrounds show that Guilded Age acknowledges the group can be a tyrant to the individual. There is more nuance in fiction than is often allowable in tweet-sized philosophy bites, which is one reason I prefer it.

Even so, I don’t have a lot of common ground with this. I believe in morality. I believe in good and evil. I believe in society. I think we can, should, and must rise above mere self-directed assimilation. Claiming that our efforts to improve society are a mere cover for just doin’ what we’ve always done– well, I’m afraid that just makes me recall my favorite line of Gordon McAlpin’s: “Cynicism is a cop-out.”
