Guest Comic by William Payne (Annotated)
William Payne’s two-year webcomic Coping with Failure is now almost completely lost to history. The image shown here was the only comic I could pull from the Internet Archive’s records of copingwithfailure.com. William, if you’re in the audience somewhere, please let loose in the comments: I’m sure I’m not the only one who’d like a more complete account of your work.
Dragons seemed like a natural fit for Guilded Age, but we never quite got there. A few offhand mentions and mounted heads of “dragonspawn,” and that was it. They might’ve been a game changer in the war, but it would’ve been difficult to get them serving any side but their own. Part of our reluctance may have been that we wanted the humans to be the surly guardians of their vast hoards of treasure here.
No, John, you are the dragons.
Who is this “John” person you seem to be talking to?
The dragons. And the demons. And then a zombie.
The best fanfiction of all time.
“It’s a good thing I chose this particular day to bring my Bat Dragon Fire Repellant Spray.”
I wish T&P had exercised some editorial prerogative over a guest strip having “break it’s skull,” in the interest of sparing readers the mental anguish of the obligatory attempts at literal parsing, at least, if not quality control. >.<
