Annotated 11-14
This scene went through some visual revisions, as you can see from the image at right (click to enlarge). At one point, the last panel was scripted as Best raising his ax in rage, which would have led into the first panel of the next page, but Phil replied, “Aw, can’t he flip the bitch like a beer pong table at a keg party?”
TBH with you, I hadn’t remembered the reactions of the others beside Best. Byron’s mouth is the biggest clue, but Syr’Nj and even Frigg widen their eyes a bit at what they see.
Best comment, by Karishi: “No, guys, it’s still good. Gravedust can answer your questions as long as the basin is on his head.”
Hmm. On the first read-through, I never noticed how uninterested Gravey was in the thing.
I like to imagine snickering spirits floating around the place, mocking the idea of using the Basin in such a way and assigning it so much importance.
Would those be Winter Elf spirits?
In the sketch on the notations he does look like a bit of a grump not caring for it, but the final page to me it’s just being “fucking hell, of course the Sky Elf counter is too tall for Dwarves” instead of just disinterest.
Yeah, this is one of the few pages I had to completely redraw. I had chosen the wrong angle, a side view for most of the action, and Phil thought a straight on view and point-of-view from the basin would be more appropriate.
I’m kinda glad you re-did it dead on. We still get Best’s expressions, but it has more of that feeling of gazing back and forth.
The Mirror shows many things…but sometimes it’s just a middle finger.
What is this? A swimming pool for ANTS???
TBPF (to be perfectly frank) I can’t remember, or even create what he saw in there in my mind. I mean, I’ve read the whole comic, and I know what happens – although on these redraws, I have noticed some things that slipped my mind… But I would love to know what he actually saw.
I’m always amazed when people can remember what happened in a comic several years ago. I remember the broad strokes but most of the details are new to me again.
