Annotated 11-16
Deconstructing the phrase “Are you thinking what I think you’re thinking” is one of my prouder moments as an editor.
The ropes were in Syr’Nj’s “special bag,” of course. She never said anything about being out of rope.
The least realistic thing about this sequence is that self-centered Best is looking like he’ll be the last out of there, which telegraphs none too subtly what is going to happen next. Byron with his low-key suicidal mood or Frigg the tank, carrying Gravedust on her back, would be more likely to bring up the rear. Well, let’s just say Best was so enraged that he barely recovered his sense of self-preservation in time to start shimmying.
I just remembered when Frigg said something about Gravedust eating like nothing and weighting a shit-ton. lol
In this page Gravey requires help to ascend the ropes. Presumably because of his age. But later, when he grapples Iver, he is shown to be a rather buff warrior.
Did you guys know at this time he was going to be very strong and capable? If so, is that later state a reflection of his self belief? As he starts to realize his own powers?
I was actually thinking of this when I re-read this page; My first attempt to explain it was that they need to climb quickly, and somehow it would be faster for Frigg to backpack Gravedust than to have him climb on his own (cause of smaller reach?). not super satisfying as an explanation, but it kinda works.
I like your idea better.
Well, even in the group’s first fight as a group (chronologically speaking), Dusty straight-up snaps a guy’s neck. He’s never been flimsy. But rope climbing requires other skills beyond raw strength, and I don’t think we ever showed him as particularly good at that. His people may have been mountaineers, but that was mostly before his time.
where’d that hat-stand come from, that’s falling into the vortex? I went back and looked and there’s nothing like it on the earlier pages, unless it’s meant to be the pillar the basin was sitting on, which looked more like a table–short and thick.
also that is a perfect Gravatar for that question. XD
Oh gawd, SO perfect! XD
A few pages back you can kind of see two of them at the foot of the staircase. They’re hard to see as they are partially obscured by speech balloons and characters. But they’re there.
Looking back, You can actually sort of make out two of them at the top in that one as well.
oooh yeah, there they are! :D
