Phil’s investment in fonts by Blambot continues to pay off. (At least I think it’s Blambot, it looks Blambotty, but by now he wasn’t running it by me whenever he got a new one to play with.)
Scipio’s “implying” construction was, I think, the only time we really used 4chan language as an inspiration point for his dialogue. Even though that was a larger-scale inspiration for his character, Phil was moving away from that culture at this point, and I had never been into it.
OH YEAAAAAH
So, how _did_ they expect to get the war machine out of the Academy without, like, a garage door (let alone out of Gnome Town and into the field)?
I see three options, in-universe:
1 – magic portal. If the Gnomes can’t do one by technology or magic, they would have to ask some sky elf. So, maybe yes, maybe not.
2 – There was a garage door already. On the other side. It’s just that Taro put the dawn thing into reverse and, frankly, couldn’t be bothered with using the door.
3 – They would have built the door later. Scene at the Gnomish council: “Let me present you our project Gn-IPX-56, nickname ‘garage door’. Its purpose is to build a large door on the side of our observatory. It will embellish the building, allow us to bring in the pieces for project Gn-IPX-55, a.k.a. ‘very large far-seeing thingy’, which you just publicly approved, and (speak very quickly) we could at last drive the damn 50-ft tall war-mech outside, we need the room.”
He forgot to say “Roof doors OPEN!” (Dr. Beaker will NOT be happy)
Did “Implying …” originate on 4chan? Well, I shouldn’t be surprised; 4chan is like the primordial soup of internet culture. Once in a while, something finds its way out of there and evolves legs.
There was an article in Enyclopedia Dramatica back in the day that said something along the lines of:
“/b/ is like the anus of the interenet, which prevents all the shit to get everywhere else”. The addition of Reddit was like a very strong anus relaxant.
Well honestly places like SomethingAwful and such had their hand on this culture, but you… You are not that far, I think. Except I’d call it primordial sewage pool.
