Annotated 2-15
The way Sundar doesn’t actually name his brother here, you might think Byron had never met him, but in the story “Entitlement,” published at the start of this volume once it went into print, Byron is working with both brothers. Maybe Sundar’s just emphasizing the connection as a form of name-dropping. You know, “MY BROTHER’s gonna be, like, worth more than Mark Zuckerberg.”
The land sharks make their first appearance here, and it must’ve been Phil who came up with them, because I was so unfamiliar with World of Warcraft that I thought using “land shark” to describe a fantasy creature (instead of a real estate speculator) was original with us. It wasn’t.
It’s not original to WOW, either.
I wonder if it was an accident that the dream image is composed like a propaganda poster.
Huh. Somehow, GA updated twice since the last time I checked. And I thought “last time” was yesterday, but maybe I just temporarily forgot that we’re not on the MWF schedule anymore? *shrug*
BTW, the comment form still doesn’t remember my name and email (although if I select their respective fields and press up key or down key, Firefox suggests them to me, so I don’t have to retype them).
Yeah, I missed a day, too…but I think it’s because my internal clock is borked.
Two updates have been going out at a time I’ve noticed. And then my RSS sends the notification out the second day.
This is on me, mostly. I’ve been setting the updates to go out just before midnight my time, but that’s not something I can automate and apparently it’s easy to get it wrong. This page was meant to go up late tonight; the next page is still on track to go up late tomorrow night and I’ve now got them queued up to the end of Chapter 3, so I’m just gonna let this bump persist. Will edit the main page to make a note of this.
Further update– well, this is even harder to keep track of than I thought, so a new page is up already. Pages should go up 11-12 PM from here on out.
And here I had thought land sharks were only a Saturday Night Live thing until this strip took the name and ran with it.
Older than that, even. Dungeons and Dragons had it, before it was Dungeons and Dragons.
Good to know I’m not the only one who thought this was from a classic SNL sketch.

Because I can never get the HTML tags to work for me.
Beaten by most of a day. :p
You can tell that Sundar has obviously never actually MET any landsharks before.
His dream sequence has them wearing PANTS.
I played WoW for years but don’t recall any land sharks. Upon checking, it seems they were added at around Warlords of Draenor? So I don’t think WoW was an inspiration for Phil in this case.
