Annotated 2-9
In the spirit of today’s page, our first to have no words at all in it, I don’t have much to say that’s not covered by the alt text. Erica supplied nearly all the detail here: Phil’s original script for the first panel read, “There are only Humans visible, save Syr’Nj, in the middle of it all, walking casually and smiling brightly and wearing a leather ear-flap hat that covers her more distinctly elven features while she browses the scene with her eyes.”
(Phil’s instinct was to capitalize the names of races like “Elf,” “Gnome,” and “Human,” but the all-caps fonts we used for most dialogue made this less of an issue than it otherwise would have been.)
Oh, look, there’s Aladdin. Considering what’s about to happen to Syr’Nj here, his cameo might be foreshadowing in a way.
Erica went ham if that was all that was asked of the first panel. Is how it tends to go when the panels are requested? Is that usually the amount of detailed asked for?
I tend to divide artists I work with into two general categories: literalists and improvisers. It’s not quite so cut and dried, of course, but Erica would generally add and alter more from the scripts than John would.
That said, a scene-setting establishing shot like panel 1 here is clearly meant to be its own absorbing world, and it’s a good spot for any artist to add a few things.
Great scene, love the facial expressions.
Found everything except the lock and maybe the street prophet (unless it’s the one with raised arms in the upper left corner).
More importantly, second panel Syr’Nj is the cutest!
