Annotated 47-19
Scipio, to be honest, didn’t need much resolution to his arc after he left the group that was then still the Peacemakers. If anything, he’s more at peace than Fr’Nj is, now. But he’d been a main character for long enough that it wouldn’t feel right if we didn’t spend a little time on how he’s doing.
I’m pretty sure this is the first time we’ve ever given him an internal narrative. He’ll always be a man of few words compared to some, but he’s less of a verbal “scorpion” than ever he was before.
It’s good news for Byron’s mental health that he can tell the story of his second death, at least touching on the horrors it involved, without killing the good mood of the reunion.
…I thought his name was pronounced “C-P-O.”
Scipio’s name originated from Latin, and the Latin pronunciation is “Skip-E-O”
It took me a while to realize that the inner monologue was probably Scipio and not Byron, what with the red background usually being Byron’s inner talking, and Byron being the first person to say anything.
…and then it was still hard to identify Scipio, what with the different dress and the unusual number of words in his first sentence :)
(but of course you’d expect him to look and sound a bit different than the previous time we saw him. He wanted to make a change, and that he did. Just a little sad that he did it as an NPC.
Took me a while to realize the monologue wasn’t Fr’ng. :D
Me too, and I was only 100% convinced it was Scipio’s monologue when I read down below the comic.
I think there are a few problems:
1) For some reason, the comic is coy about Scipio’s identity until AFTER the monologue.
2) Byron has a habit of monologue-ing in red-background-ed text, so I’ve already read the monologue in his voice by the time Scipio shows up.
3) The subject of the monologue is finding peace in community, coming in before a scene that shows how Byron has developed in his comfort level within his community.
I really like the IDEA of this scene–I can hear the record scratch over the monologue on Byron’s outburst–but I really think Scipio should have been established as in the scene in panels 1 or 2 for it to work.
Why, if it isn’t Prince Barin
