Annotated 47-35
I had forgotten panels 1 and 2 here. The follow-up on the gnomes’ escape is nice, just in case anyone was concerned that Ardaic’s “They are sorely mistaken” would prove prophetic. But the portrayal of protest even in the age of Taro is no small thing. Those sign-carriers are willing to put themselves at more risk than those in a more dissent-tolerant society. That kind of courage is valuable and important.
Lots of title-inspired imagery as we move to the big finish. Even Best’s signature color looks like something we totally planned: the words themselves are gold! (Just an accident, of course.)

Down with this sort of thing?
Careful now.
I wonder which one of the authors put in the Pratchett reference.
I think that “down with that sort of thing” originated with Father Ted, the British sitcom.
Is it cool that this scene is still relevant today…
…or is it really disturbing?
Yes.
At any rate, I doubt it will *ever* not be relevant in one way or another.
I am kind of surprised that people protest the dealing with the gnomes- it actually shows that Gastonians DID become more tolerant during their war time alliance ( or maybe they always seen gnomes as the most simmilar to them and the least problematic)
As Weo said, a people aren’t their leaders. I’m sure there were always quite a few Gastonians who saw nonhumans as people, they just got ignored by the press unless Mister Bedard had a use for a “look at what nutcases these people are, they actually think savages are people!” angle.
Will Penk have to beat-box in the rap version?
And does it start with “DJ Payet Bee in the house __ uh __ uh __ uh __ uh”?
That’s a very stirring song, but I imagine a big looming Beelzeboss growling “You guys are fucking lame!” once they were done.
Good heavens, Penk’s hand strength must be incredible since he is able to control the tone of that talking drum with one hand :)
Hey, he’s got the power of Tectonicus backing him up…
