Annotated 48-49
FB: Today’s installment of our webcomic is slightly less digital than usual.
It’s a nice detail that Best’s player had a special affinity for Escape from Cyberia, even more so than Kingdoms of Arkerra, foreshadowing the time Best will spend in Cyberia. It’s also foreshadowing that he’s kinda getting on Byron’s player’s nerves, though not so much as to ruin the moment for anyone. It does seem like Cyberia would reward extensive solo play more than Arkerra, and we all know how long it took Best to become a team player.
If Escape of Cyberia really had been ready for full-body VR play in late 2019, then Hurricane Studios could’ve had a better 2020 than Zoom did.
(It’s my birthday, I am quite old.)
They all seemed so nice, but someone gave Carol the finger so casual. Damn.
Also congratulations on another life cycle, fellow organic life matter!
Congrats on Leveling Up, T
ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED
(youngster)
Happy birthday, T! We are all very happy that you exist!
Happy B-day! Hope to keep seeing the stuff that you do for quite a while.
Happy birthday, T.
A Halloween birthday? Must have made for some interesting birthday parties…
Happy Birthday!!!!
Happy birthday!
I’m not sure what would I do if I were in one of the 5’s place, but I’m sure I would not just throw my clothes on the floor like a 12 year old slob. Carol’s face in panel No.5 is far more eloquent than me.
Mr. Campbell, please have a Happy Birthday (didn’t knew you were born on Halloween. I wrote and deleted 5 jokes about it. I’m sure you’ve heard plenty those by now)
Seeing as how 5 complete strangers just got naked without too much prodding I doubt it matters much to Carol. Besides it’s not like they gave the 5 anything to hang or set their clothes on anyway.
I think I would still have folded them and put them next to “my” tube or somewhere close. So they’re not that far away when I get out and want to put them on again. Also to minimize the chance of Carol accidentally swapping out my underwear with Best’s or something like that…
As is revealed on this page, all of Carol’s faces here are related to her present thoughts, not to this flashback/dream-sequence.
I am sure she was all smiles and enthusiasm the first time around.
Happy Womb Expulsion day!
Happy b-day. My sister and you are actually birthday neighbors
Happy birthday! I appreciate all you do!
I like the irony of Byron starting the hostilities between them without justification and just to selfishly present himself as the better person.
Hostility? Selfish? I guess if you’re a big Best fan, you could see it that way…
The way I see it, Best’s human just can’t stop himself from telling everyone that the most amazing thing they’ll ever see in their lives is of course just the second best game in the world, which is somewhat … in-character for Best. And Byron’s human tells him he’d rather enjoy the moment than diminish it with such comparisons.
… does that sound hostile to you? And if yes, why?
I guess if you’re a big Byron fan, you could see it that way…
Interpreting a statement that says “I’m really excited about this tech and using it on another game I really like.” to mean “Which obviously means I consider this game lesser and the people who like it lesser as well.” is literally a joke people make about bad-faith arguments on twitter. And apparently having the gall to be enthused for the future deserves a smarmy take-down? Let’s be clear, Bryon is NOT telling him what he’d rather enjoy in some diplomatic attempt at presenting an alternate viewpoint. He’s pointedly attacking Best’s point of view – unprompted – because apparently he gets the final say on what ‘diminishes’ a moment. That’s a level of self-serving arrogance even Best never reached!
Though to be fair, it weren’t for lack of trying.
Best literally says “KofA is going to be a great test run and all… but”
If you don’t see the comparison, you’re probably not doing the voice.
Do the voice.
And now we know why it’s a joke on twitter. Any excuse to justify being ‘that guy’, I guess… smh
You’re putting the most amazingly negative spin on expressions of disagreement, from characters or people.
I feel like you’re reading into it way too hard. Both characters comments are very slightly annoying. Neither of them are particularly hostile. If I had been present to experience this exchange in real life, it wouldn’t have even been worth lingering on in my mind for half a minute. But in this current reality where I am in fact lingering on it, it honestly could be read as friendly banter to me. I don’t remember if it was explicitly expressed within the comic itself that these two don’t know each other in sepia world but I could see them being buddies, just lightly ribbing each other. And can we really call this “starting the hostilities” when neither of them will remember this moment ever again? Pretty sure in Arkerra their beef is entirely fresh.
I mean, I guess? Byron’s comment is not a unique observation–humanity’s inability to experience the current moment because we’re preoccupied by something that might happen or might have happened is enough of a known that it’s addressed by most religions and some sorts of psychology. His comment comes across as a cliche or sort of preachy if you’re especially sensitive or in a fragile state, I guess, but it’s really only “opening hostilities” in the sense that sepia!Byron’s being mildly annoying in response to sepia!Best being mildly annoying. With the way sepia!Best acts in the very little we see of him I kind of doubt he noticed the ribbing.
Best’s comments are ironic in light of the contempt he would later express towards his experience as WAV.

Happy birthday — mine, too!
