Annotated 48-54
FB: [Muzak plays “MTA” by the Kingston Trio]
I don’t know if this elevator’s steel cables can handle the weight of all the symbolism it’s been gathering, between this chapter, the one where Shanna first laid eyes on it, and the one where Ferris rode it to his doom. At least we never called the bottom level “Sub-Basement 13.”
And so ends our antepenultimate chapter, not with a bang but with an ominous silence. We’ve still got a lot of pieces in play, but there’s only one real villain left, and the next chapter has him making his final campaign against everyone, as he planned from the start.
The way the elevator gets swallowed by darkness at the last panel, going smaller… Goosebumps! But also *cheffkiss*. I like how all previous appearances of the elevator serve to ibtensify our abversion/lure towards it. Great storytelling all around.
(I saw a similar comment of yours get temporarily held for my approval, because our comments system’s a bit skittish these days. Since it seemed redundant with this one, I just deleted it…hope that was all right.)

I’m going down, down, down, down, down below.
Are you coming with me? Are you ready to go?
I’m going down, down, down, down, all the way.
In the Hellevator, I refuse to pray!
