Annotated 7-16
Phil and Erica made my original version of this scene a lot funnier by giving Ardaic the sort of dialogue Frigg would imagine for him and going all in on the expressions, though there wasn’t room to show that Frigg had force-fed Mich all the chess pieces in the fantasy panels.
Only via Fantasy Ardaic can Frigg be 100% honest about her motives at this point.
Originally, this page ended with Franz talking about how knights move in an L-shape, setting up a gag for when we’d see Frigg next. Also originally, these pages did a lot more “crosscutting,” with each page break leading to a scene change, so these time-jumps were less noticeable. Phil restored the structure of the original outline– again, I was more into jumping around than he was.
“Y’know I JUST remembered something. In MY culture, it’s customary for the winner to shove one piece up their ass for every win. Here, I’ll help!”
Play s’more? I thought you ate those.
I forgot how much I love this scene.
This is my favorite Frigg page.
I’m trying to think which chess piece would be most like Frigg in personality… not the Queen. She doesn’t have the finesse of the Queen. And not the Knight; all that going around corners is not like her. And while the Castle is as blunt as she is, I think she’d dislike being at a distance from the battle. And she’s no one’s pawn.
No, it’s the Bishop. Sail right in, knock over whatever’s in your path, and protect your homies.
Fits right in with her class being Paladin. :)
(Personally, I’m not very fond of the bishops, since unlike Knight, Castle, King and Queen, it takes both of them to cover the whole board. But I’m a complete amateur at chess, so my opinion should be taken with a scoop of salt.)
The whole chess part was one of Frigg’s best bits.
This is one of my favorite pages because it shows her relationship with the team really well.
Frigg was always the one that was most “Why is she even *with* this team?” and this moment with her shows at least one major reason: She thinks they’ll die without her, and she feels responsible for that.
Also note: head-Ardaic referred to them as “your friends”. She considers then friends by this point.
Or at least, she thinks Ardaic thinks she considers them as friends.
It’s… called… a… rook…
That didn’t go where I wanted it to…
