Annotated Chapter 4 Cover
Sometimes annotating this stuff surprises me. Here are the original notes for this cover:
Let’s have an “Adventures on High Seas” type of splash-action page, with the gang (w/Best) fighting pirates on the ship against a blue, cloudy sky. We don’t want to give away outright that it’s a flying ship with this image, but it can hint at it.
Well, I sure don’t remember this! It could’ve been my idea or Phil’s, though my lack of memory of it and the allusion to the title of a gaming manual makes Phil the more likely author. If so, there’s a good chance this was vetoed by Erica. In any case, vetoing it was a good call: fighting pirates on the ship against a blue, cloudy sky was pretty much the art that we were going to give them inside the story, so there wouldn’t have been much contrast, and it would’ve completely broken our practice of subtler, more evocative covers, which were better for keeping you all guessing.
If true Erica used her veto power well. :P
Now that we’re on the topic of covers: Who comes with all these alt-texts? And who came with the idea of specifically making every chapter cover “The one where they…”?
I’m guessing it was borrowed from the “Friends” TV series, which were also all named “The one where …”.
That would make Best Joey, Byron is Ross; … no, wait, that doesn’t work. Never mind.
The male-female ratio is the same, but we don’t have any characters who got MORE douchey as things progressed, like Ross did.
One of them did his very Best, though.
The alt text, like the lettering, was firmly Phil’s department.
Why do people insist in calling the “title” (the hover text) “alt-text”? Alt serves a different purpose and do not show up at all unless the image fails loading (hence it’s an alternative).
If I remember correctly, “alt-text” existed back in the days when users couldn’t be counted upon to have the ability to display pictures in their browser and often contained such snippets before hover text was a thing. So it’s merely an anachronism like using a floppy disk icon for your save button even though most people these days don’t even know what those were.
“And my Axe!”
Of course, with Best, that’s probably his brand of body spray.
Don’t worry, I think Frigg can handle it.
you play Palladium too? :D
