I can be pretty mean, like I was about the first one who is just sad to be alone and fair enough, but I’ll say for the first one and this lady now, material possessions cannot fill a heart that wants for human relationships. I’ve lived through poverty and I’ve lived well, not millionaire rich, but without having to worry about food, shelter, etc. Having things is better, it’s true, but I’ve never been depressed because I was hungry. I’ve only ever been depressed because I was unloved or alone. Human beings are social animals. When you are sleeping under a bridge you still break a single loaf of bread in half and give it to your brother because that human love does more to keep you alive than more material would.
Anyway, whatever, I just think people were being too harsh on her earlier and so was I on the other girl. She isn’t being spoiled or demanding or self-entitled. She’s just sad for the spite, anger, and misery that was around her.
I’d remark that you can’t have been hungry enough then… but I don’t know how you personally respond to things, so it would be a statement from ignorance.
Personally, I’ve always found instability the most depressing.
I’ve spent most of my life alone and it hasn’t really bothered me… but being forced to continually uproot and re-order my life because elements outside my control kept disrupting it… THAT screwed with me on a psychological level too. Being powerless to control your own destiny… THAT is scary stuff.
Frankly, I believe having people getting all up in my business at all turns would just make it worse.
BTW, looking at the previous page – was Chrissy a female child with a boyish haircut, boy pj’s and an affinity for ninja turtles? Or was she a boy who’s now transgender?
Not that there’s anything wrong with that, really. I’m just curious.
She’s definitely biologically female in the flashback. Not to be crass, but you can see in panel two of the previous update that her torso is shaped to include breasts.
It just means across… but I’ve noticed people seem to be “implying” a context to that which isn’t explicitly stated any more.
And far be it from my place to point this out… but there is more than one context that one can be “trans” for.
But let’s face it… it is a cultural thing. The zeitgeist and all that. Pick a misunderstood minority and stick a token character in your work. Appeal to the left-wing fans. Nevermind the fact that minorities are just that: a rather small proportion of the population… and the odds of randomly encountering one in regular life are far lower than in the equivalent amount of time spent in modern fiction.
… Y’know… I’ll just shut up for now. I’ve forgotten what I was even getting at.
QUILTBAG, not Fans, but, yeah, she’s another character from an earlier T comic. (He confirmed it’s the same Chrissie in the comments earlier in the arc.)
Yeah, this is pretty much where I was expecting it to go. Nothing big and dramatic, but… one more crack in a relationship that was already cracking, and this crack just happened to come around Christmas.
Time (and the rest of the Axemas special) will tell whether they’ll repair the relationship or whether it will fall apart entirely. Either way, seeing your parents in the process of splitting, while old enough to understand what’s happening, is a pretty effective way of ruining the holiday spirit – especially if she doesn’t clearly remember the first time.
I really love the reserved look of the father. What’s not there in his face really comes out in his frozen mannerisms, particularly panel three. You’re in your own home, next to your wife, watching tv at what I assume is late at night, and you should be relaxed. And he looks like he’s trying, laid out on the couch, yet his hands are clasped and he’s got a rigid posture where there should be a relaxed couch potato. And heck that’s what just sticks out to me because for some reason he catches my eye, but looking back at the rest of the page, you’ve got these wonderfully expressive faces when we’re zoomed back in. Especially Rachel’s player. In panel 5, you’ve got that look of patience and love down perfectly, I can really feel it just looking into her eyes and her smile. Sorry for my rambling. In short, I still love the art in this comic immensely. No big surprise there.
It’s not just him, it’s her as well – a general posture of “attempting to keep as far away as possible without it being obvious that she’s attempting to keep as far away as possible”. It’s a very expressive panel in general, one that anyone who’s been in that situation, or seen a couple in that situation, can easily recognise.
Rachel’s back!
HAPPY FUCKING NEW YEARS PEOPLE!
Meh, I’m single again so it’s just HAPPY NEW YEARS PEOPLE from me :-)

“I’d say more, but my story is simply-BIGGER THAN CHRISTMAS.”
Yes, regale us with your emotional distress.
There’s no loneliness like being alone with a partner that won’t love you.

Chin and faceshape says girl. To me.

Those are boys’ PJs? I guess I’ve been doing it wrong.
Of course they are, I love wearing my “Jacksons”.
Chrissie is trans.
That’s kinda awesome that you both set the record straight and that she is.
She is? I could have sworn in panel 2 of the strip prior to this one, she had breasts. Did she begin transition therapy early in life?
Trans-what?
It just means across… but I’ve noticed people seem to be “implying” a context to that which isn’t explicitly stated any more.

I can’t help but wonder what she’d think about a bunch of people arguing about whether or not she looked masculine pre-transition . . .
Not much. She’d probably get that sort of thing a lot.
Unless she’s way more different from the other universe’s version than we’ve been lead to believe, she is trans.
*shrug* maybe. Is that important ?
Kinda. It could explain a bit more about how comfortable she was with her earlier life, as well.
I assume it is to the OP, since they asked the question (albeit in a post other than the one I replied to, oops).
Oh, is Chrissie another Fans expy? I never read-up on Fans, so I don’t really catch the references to it.
QUILTBAG, not Fans, but, yeah, she’s another character from an earlier T comic. (He confirmed it’s the same Chrissie in the comments earlier in the arc.)
Er…this universe’s equivalent of the same Chrissie, I should say.
Sorry about the offtopic, but I couldn’t help but notice your avatar is perfect for this discussion.
Nice segue.
Aww come on; don’t tell me you guys didn’t notice the author shifting gears here…
Yeah, you’re probably right.
Nice necklace there…
It’s a pin. They gave it to her a few pages back?
I really really like Lia. Even more than I liked Rachel, now.

Bandit’s player is still cute.
So is Lia a psychotherapist? Did she want to be?
