Not just good, but great. :D Big Swordy Cigar Guy, Raeg, or Scipio if you prefer, is awesome incarnate. I’d LOVE to see his conversations with Best, but failing that it’d be interesting to see what he says to Byron. :)
Ah, frigg looks so smug in that panel about being practically worshipped. On another note, I can’t wait to see scipio deal out some damage without ever dropping his cigar.
Frigg just asked herself, “What would Jesus do?”, and the answer was “Undermine the established religion and create a new one based on worship of myself.”
Well, this explains why Frigg is hearing voices (from the fantasy perspective, at least). If she’s got people holding her up as an avatar, it was inevitable Someone up there would take notice.
Hey, I’m not asking for sympathy, just because we’re sensitive to UV.
Besides, I bet Scipio does alright with the females, he probably likes to take them out for Ginger beer, and soon their running their fingers through his ginger beard, and dunking his ginger nuts into their ginger tea, yeah…
I am totally taking Frigg on as my next cleric’s diety. ‘Oh holy goddess, please give me the strength to smack a biatch.’ And our confessions would start with ‘U Mad?’
I feel kinda sorry for Rachel (and the other nuns I suppose). She’s not doing what she is because she believes it’s right, she does it because she cannot live without dogma to direct here and give her meaning that she cannot obtain on her own. The fact that the sisters switched from “bad” to (relatively) “good” just like that implies there was never any real depth to either conviction, it’s merely the switching of idols.
Scipio is right in saying that she’s still a slave (though not to him).
Agree with pity for Rachel while bloodshot, not so sure about now. Frigg isn’t telling her what to do. Frigg isn’t authoring any dogma. Sounds like the sisters may have taken what little Frigg said at the time, and then added their own interpretation. Don’t know who leads them now, but it sure isn’t Frigg. It may be that the sisters were ignorant, conditioned, conformist. Maybe Frigg opened their eyes, Rachel’s eyes, to the possibility of something different. Showed them Scarlet and Gigundus were not invincible, and not truthful. Rachel did say she had doubts before. Takes a strong person to stand by their convictions when they’re being whipped by a respected authority figure in a closed community. So Rachel’s not that strong. Doesn’t mean she’s just a weathervane in the wind. “Unyielding open heart” is not a Frigg phrase, so the sisters came up with that on their own. The Bloodshot Eyeball preached about healing the sick, helping orphans, etc, but did things dickishly, with cruelty. Based on the new sisterhood’s name, and what little Rachel has said, I’m guessing they kept “heal the sick”, “help orphans”, threw out “be cruel asshats”, so it’s not a 180 degree turn in belief. I’d have to know more about this reformed sisterhood’s current beliefs to be sure though. — If the avatar generator scans posts for character names, will I get a Rachel avatar? Or is the frequent match of pics to comments coincidence? I’m hoping text scanner, would be nifty. ;)
Frigg isn’t creating the dogma, the sisters are. That’s the whole point. Even after being set free they “imprint” themselves on a new idol. They don’t care about good or evil, they just need something to follow, someone to direct their lives because they can’t do it on their own. That’s what’s sad.
Yes, they have raised a new idol (somewhat more worthy than the last one). Yes, following dogma blindly because you want to be led is quite, quite sad. Just not sure Rachel is still doing that to the extent she once did. Do we know if the reformed sisterhood beats people for having doubts? Since the sisters are writing the text that directs their lives, are they not directing their own lives? If it’s just Frigg the Holy did this and spake thusly, do what Frigg says, that’s dogma and idolization. If the sisters add their own interpretation and ideas, then not so much. What’s in these holy texts besides the Life of Frigg? Don’t know. Rachel speaks of being told “how to stand for ourselves”. That to me, suggests learning how to be more freethinking, less dogmatic. Don’t know if that is what Rachel actually meant. Waiting to see more before deciding.
How old the bloodshot eyeball was? It might have been an order changing over time. Gigundus might have been the founder and a person before it was a golem and Scarlet was probably not the first leader of the nuns. Deciding that they are all ‘good’ now based on one of them not being very bitchy is hardly all that well-considered.
Who said they were all good? Merely saying Rachel may not be as much a sheep as she once was, and perhaps a somewhat better person. Just saying it’s possible the sisters might be practicing “heal the sick” better now, rather than paying it lip service and being cruel, since their tyrannical leadership is gone. Didn’t say that’s how it is, just that it might be. Scarlet was evil, does that mean all the sheep who followed her were? I’m sure she attracted bullies, and created abusers by abusing. Doesn’t mean those she abused started out inherently evil or can’t learn and change given time. Saying they were all evil and are now all good would be silly. People don’t have two opposite ethical states they flip between like a light switch.
It seems to be part random, but with some kind of appropriateness algorithm (or intervention). There are quite a few avatars that have been simply perfect for the comment that first generated them.
I think it’s just a simple hash code or something. Random luck is a big factor. Several other comics I read are using a similar system, and I haven’t been as lucky with avatars on them.
Or possibly some inspiration was taken from the Codex Alera series? The main character in those books goes by the name “Scipio” for a while. And the stuff he does as Scipio is pretty fricken schweet, so it’s possible… Maybe?
Indubitably. But while Scipio Africanus was a historical figure, Rufus Scipio is the pseudonym of a fictional character. There’s a slight difference there.
Although I wonder; if Tavi is supposed to be Scipio, does that make Nasaug (or Varg, maybe) Hannibal? Canim as Carthaginians? Could be.
On the one hand, you could say this is more of the same – new redheaded figure, new sisterhood…
But.
Maybe it’s too much to expect people to just *give up* what they’ve followed their entire lives. At least this is a step in the right direction – even Frigg is better than what they had before, and their idealized *version* of Frigg, made in her absence… Is. WELL. It seems like the sisterhood has taken steps in a better direction, at least. It’s a long journey to go. But.
This is going to be good.
Well, paladins. They’re like fighter jocks that way.
Frigg’s face is awesome, but it’s outdone by the synchronized “Oh, really?” look on Bandit’s and Syr’nj’s faces.
Panel 3 is just made of win overall.
Yeah, she’s become a Friggin’ Saint, ya’ all.
You guys misspelled “Raeg”. But that’s okay. I’ll let it go.
Also, what class do you have to be to have the “extra arm-growing” skill? That looks broken as all hell. (I’m teasing, John. :P)
its a purposeful misspell
supposed to be his name and they didn want it OBVIOUS.
Scripo- “Oh yeah, I hitting that.” ;)
Cutting into the action if ya knowhatimean.
I’ve suspected it since first seeing him, but now I consider it confirmed.
This guy is totally a slightly less masculine clone of Frigg.
You guys are teasing a Clone Saga plot down the line, aren’t you?
Oh man. Lets hope that Rachel never becomes a queen later in life. Because knowing how she dresses, she’d be a white queen.
She wouldn’t even fight her new idol when Frigg came for her. And she’d never walk the same afterwards.
PERFECT RANDOM AVATAR
Panel one, far right: “YOINK!”
Frigg would have gotten the shoulders, but Byron ninja’d the boss loot roll.
Goddamn it Byron you ****ing ninja! we spent 4 HOURS in that raid! I NEEDED THOSE PAULDRONS FOR MY DPS ALT ‘CHSSFKR’
That wouldn’t be an Hunter with a pet called Kween, by any chance?
i guess you could call it a pet, yeah.
I muttered that to myself when I saw that.
I think we just saw what Gravedust’s sense of humor is.
Dry.
Drier than the driest desert in the Sand World
An arid amusement
hes very grave with a humor as dry as dust.
he can come off as a person cool as a desert at night, but he lays down jokes like a hammer…
Honestly? If I were going to have a religion, I would base it around Frigg, too.
Frigg just asked herself, “What would Jesus do?”, and the answer was “Undermine the established religion and create a new one based on worship of myself.”
bug to be honest she didn’t try to do that.
also, i second snail.
Well, this explains why Frigg is hearing voices (from the fantasy perspective, at least). If she’s got people holding her up as an avatar, it was inevitable Someone up there would take notice.
So in this setting, paladinesque powers are derived from having some crazies worship you?
At least it isn’t some nonsense like ‘servant of goodness’, I guess.
Paladins have always been Faith as Power, but if MM’s surmise is correct, it apparently doesn’t have to be YOUR faith.
Well, that’s how Hercules gets his power now (in the Marvel universe, anyway). He’s being worshiped by half of Brooklyn right now.
It’s also how gods work in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books.
Not just Discworld gods, but other anthropomorphic beings like Death and the Hogfather.
Don’t forget Santa Claus!
That is the Hogfather.
Time, however, just needs love.
I was gonna comment about how Scipio was talking about ginger people negatively but then I noticed he’s ginger himself.
And as the song goes, only a ginger can call another ginger ‘ginger’. So I guess it’s alright then.
But Mary Ann is still the one you take home to meet your parents.
I take them both home and get a high-five from my dad.
Perfect avatar.
Seriously?? This be PC at it’s worst.
You know who the real affront to Gingers is?
Wendy’s.
Someone should protest.
Oh wait. http://www.collegehumor.com/video/1783681/redheads-protest-wendys
His name may be “Scipio”, but to me he’ll always be “Bis swordy cigar guy”.
Arrrgh. “Big”
…why is your icon different in the reply?
im betting to represent a different person?
MAGIC.
Give Frigg a top hat and monocle in Panel 3 and we have the new epic trollface lol.
eyes, these background characters dont look right with lines but no eyes!
Smug grin, so wide, it doubles over
How the heck did Frigg teleport from her positioning in panel three to her sudden position in panel four??
It’s a miracle!
Ain’t no thang.
She obviously walked over to get her ego pumped.
I am totally taking Frigg on as my next cleric’s diety. ‘Oh holy goddess, please give me the strength to smack a biatch.’ And our confessions would start with ‘U Mad?’
But we get a whole new set of problems when she tells us to “eat of her flesh.”
As long as we don’t have to drink of her blood.
It blurs the line between communion and traffic jam even further!
And lo did the Lady Frigg say unto those who gathered there, “come forth and suck it n00bz”, and then the n00bz came forth, and they did suck upon it.
The Gospel According to Rachel, chapter sixteen, verse twelve.
I feel kinda sorry for Rachel (and the other nuns I suppose). She’s not doing what she is because she believes it’s right, she does it because she cannot live without dogma to direct here and give her meaning that she cannot obtain on her own. Deep thoughts, captain.

Nope, still Bandit, which was my avie last time I posted. How do these work? Why do they sometimes change?
They change at the end of each chapter because of delightful whim.
They’re either assigned by Name or Email. This will test which.
Frigg isn’t creating the dogma, the sisters are. That’s the whole point. Even after being set free they “imprint” themselves on a new idol. They don’t care about good or evil, they just need something to follow, someone to direct their lives because they can’t do it on their own. That’s what’s sad.

Apparently, it’s email. And by changing my name, my comment needs moderation.
I understand an avie gets assigned to an email, just wondered how it was assigned, randomly, purposely, or as you say, delightful whim.
I’m loving this new characters. Also, I want the faces in panel 2 as avatars!
Panel 3 *ahem*
Scipio? As in, Africanus?
Are we gonna see some Roman style asskicking next?
Or possibly some inspiration was taken from the Codex Alera series? The main character in those books goes by the name “Scipio” for a while. And the stuff he does as Scipio is pretty fricken schweet, so it’s possible… Maybe?
Considering Codex Alera is basically about Rome IN HIGH FANTASY!!, I’d say I’m still right.
Could be.
frigg and scipio are SO getting together!
Scipio: i am heavy vepons guy…
Frigg: no, I am heavy weapons guy!
S: you are not a guy…
Frigg: …hits or gtfo!
Paladin? She got worshipers. She might be a Chosen Soul Avatar of RedEye..
…….I have mixed feelings.
On the one hand, you could say this is more of the same – new redheaded figure, new sisterhood…

Sticks with my theory that frigg worships herself.
