Not only was the original reference done at least 4 or 5 times in earlier comments…
BUT that inappropriate breaking of a reference through application of THAT pun has also already been done… and it was atrocious the first time.
If you consider that he killed 29 of the horde’s number in the previous battle alone, at his current age no less, a mere 97 humans does seem rather few.
The previous battle was an uncommonly huge one. Merely surviving such a battle would imply killing quite a number of enemies. Also, I don’t think the wood elves made war very often at all in the recent past 100 or 200 years.
Except that Kon’kr and the others were pretty quick to jump on the “kill all the humans” bandwagon, which implies bad experiences with humans that are recent enough still to smart. Also, Byron’s first instinct when he and Gravy came across the slaughtered village with lots of oak seedlings was that it had been Wood Elves. He acknowledged it was too obvious (and Syr’Nj pointed out that Wood Elves plant willows for death), but it would still require that Wood Elf raids/killing parties are sufficiently common for that to be a logical inference.
Only 97? How old is the turkey? I mean, we have serial killers who quietly kill dozens of people over a few years without being caught, some 1,000 year old guy who could happily go on a few “hunting” trips now and again could have slaughtered loads of them.
there was a brief moment when he made a sparkly vampire joke, but those true crewmen knew it to be mockery, and the accuser to be without privilege to take said Geek-card, as s/he called the Captain by the name “Pickard.”
I thought it was more along the lines of ‘ if you cant be all of these things, then fine, stop being my daughter, because the other two are much too important for you to not be’
I’m with the Captain on this one.*
I think her mother is using these words like a slap to the face – you know, like you smack a person having hysterics to break the hysteria.
I also think she’s saying that just as Syr can’t really NOT be her daughter, she really CAN handle the pressure of all these expectations and jobs.
*For the record, I’d be with the Captain on just about anything, so long as it’s got enough, uh, support. *leer*
Also, Syr is technically implying that she cannot be her mother’s daughter with her own words. The clause “I’m the elder’s eldest” is one of the three things that Syr implies she cannot be with “I can’t be any of these things”. So yeah, if she ‘cannot’ be the elder’s eldest, then logically she ‘cannot’ be Faereksch’ daughter ;-P
I believe it is actually more of a “Believe in yourself’ speech.
Faereksch’Nj, as I am reading it, is saying that Syr’Nj IS strong enough to be all these things, she does have what it takes to rise to the challenge. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed by the enormity of such things, but Syr’Nj has done things no other Wood Elf has ever even attempted before. The strength is there in her heartwood. She just needs to believe, as her mother believes.
Wow.
It’s been a while since I’ve said anything to this effect (usually it’s gags ‘n’ giggles), but… The art is incredible. I think this page may be one of the best so far. So luminous… And what a layout!
Rrgh. I meant to also say that I think that you are embarking on the next level. That is to say, while your work was excellent when you started, you continue to improve, rather than allowing yourself to plateau at “Enh.. Good enough.”
Given how quickly she got to Best after the pirates/etc., the quick release would seem probable. But as for where she’s looking, I think it’s just generically looking away.
I think her mother’s comment was meant to mean “I know you have it in you to be all of those things; and you can no more deny it than you can deny your own birth”.
This situation has gone kon’krs.
Looks like Kon’krs having a Bad Fur Day.
…Bad Beard Day? I dunno…
I think that one kon’kred out
Perhaps, Bad Fir Day?
Fir real.

Only 97 humans? I’m afraid you guys have irrevocably shattered my suspension of disbelief.
he is an elf old enough to look aincinet. he could have been at it for a while to wrack up that kill count.
I think you mistake Swissaboo’s meaning – he expected it to be MORE! MORE! MORE!
Ok now you sound like Revya on the Demon Path.
If you consider that he killed 29 of the horde’s number in the previous battle alone, at his current age no less, a mere 97 humans does seem rather few.

agreed wood elves in the dark wood aren’t likely to run into many humans to kill. So his number is actually pretty large.
Except that Kon’kr and the others were pretty quick to jump on the “kill all the humans” bandwagon, which implies bad experiences with humans that are recent enough still to smart. Kon’kr never actually fought any humans. He’s just a really bad cook.
Perfect icon for that statement.
Man, I’m pretty sure Byron’s already topped that.

Who-so-ever wields this Bough,
If they be Worthy,
Shall receive the power of Graiya
*BOOM*
ok, this calls for a “Wait. WHAT!?!” at the last panel.
Syr’s mom is basically saying, “This really needs to be done so less QQ, more pew, pew.”
Less QQ ? What do you mean, captain Picard ?
Q, like a “crying eye” smiley ?
Yup!
It basically means “less crying, more shooting”. But that doesn’t rhyme.
Jean-Luc, sir, you have just executed a masterful win.
Here’s your geek card back. :P
He lost it?

I’m right with you in the ‘what-what?’ moment.
I’m sure it sounds worse than it is…right? This is why we elaborate our thoughts.
I believe it is actually more of a “Believe in yourself’ speech.

Thank you, maggPi.
He’s got 97 kills, but an elf ain’t one.
“Suck it up, Angst Girl!”
What this guy said.
“Syr’nj, I’m sorry to say this, but your fired. Thanks for playing Arkerra Apprentice”
When the Bough breaks, the cradle will fall, and down will go Syr’nj, disowned and all.
Hmm… unless my eyes deceive me, Frigg is drinking, and staring at Scipio.
This could fun. Hmm… I wonder if Frigg’s armor has a ‘quick release’ feature, in all the right places?
Given how quickly she got to Best after the pirates/etc., the quick release would seem probable. But as for where she’s looking, I think it’s just generically looking away.
The play of light in and between the first few panels is fantastic. Kudos!
Syr’Nj should know by now she should take the good, take the bad and there you have the flax of life. The flax of life.
Gold Star.
Even angry old men can be happy old men after a few killings.
‘…and your adopted!’
her adopted what?
I think her mother’s comment was meant to mean “I know you have it in you to be all of those things; and you can no more deny it than you can deny your own birth”.
Later on: “Dammit, now I’ve killed 98 savages. Time to go find another human.”
“btw… d’you think it’d look better to display their skulls as drinking vessels in my living room, or my dining room..?”
“Drinking vessels in the dining room, mounted as ornamentation in the living room, but you’ll have to swap out the human skull mugs if you do.”
Ohhhhh…. CONQUER
