See, what confuses me is that this new religion is based off the teachings of Frigg, right? I can’t imagine her code says anything one way or the other about celibacy, but I imagine if it does, it trends the opposite direction of Rachel’s in this regard.
It’s not sex that Rachel has given up for her order, it’s commitment and relationships. So she’ll screw him, but then she might go have to screw someone else as penance.
It isn’t physical unions that she’s forbidden, its romantic ones. I don’t think she’d have to commit any penance for sex…but she might be sent to a distant land as penance for falling in love with someone.
Open Unyielding Heart actually sounds a lot like the precepts of Ishtar…minus the prostitution aspect…
All of which is a bit stupid, as Frigg… who is one of fairly low mind (all considered) is likely entirely capable of actually falling for someone. She simply has the sense to put pride in the way (plus those she gets a liking for have a tendency to die, or be douches, or fall for other people).
I really don’t think that what stops her from commuting with e-merl is her religious beliefs, but her analytical understanding of his idea of a relationship. It’s not that she doesn’t like him, she does. But she sees that they’re just not compatible, that he needs a different type of person. One ready to give and help like she does, but one who can focus on him to fix his deficiency at loving himself. Which really is a huge pack of baggage she knows she can’t help him pick up on her own, so she tries to sniff it at the bud before it’ll break them both. And she isn’t happy about this either but she knows that it just wouldn’t work.
I agree with your observation, sad as it maybe. I agree. It is for the best for the both of them. E-merl has a lot of emotional baggage that Rach can’t just pick up and run with. He needs to fix himself and find someone who can help him fix himself.
That’s okay, E-Merl deserves to be with someone tolerable anyway. Maybe Bandit. They both have that street punk with a heart of gold and hidden talents but not much faith in themselves thing going on.
You know. If I am not mistaken the Dogma of the Unyielding Heart was created just recently? I do not think any specific god enforced it upon them? It feels so terribly abstract and wrong at the same time that people would volunteer to be… Actually, what’s wrong with having an open heart to everybody but being with E-Merl? I shall never understand Clerics/Paladins.
Come to think of it, do we know anything about Human gods in this world? We know the Wood Elves worshiped Graiya and the Savage Races have a perchant for Tectonicus, Cultists have their Uncountless Limbs and Dwarf Mystics took orders from Death itself…but we only had a passing reference or two on what greater powers Humans pay homage to if I am not mistaken.
Well, we do have a god/ess/thing supporting Frigg (and Rachel), so I assume that The Unyeilding Open is under that One’s aspect. Probably its the same god/ess/thing that supported the previous sisterhood, paradigm shifting to a) to avoid their church turning inward and secretive, which led to the whole cultist thing, and b) because the new tenants might actually be tougher – the sisters must care about everyone, without favoritism, but must be tough and battle-hardened, and can be intimate, but not love.
The previous crew were all steel, and no heart. Difficult, and painful, but once you stopped giving a damn, it would get easier. Unyielding Open carries the burden of both Steel and Heart, and that is a weight that can break even the strongest.
Funny, in the second pannel, Rachel looks more patronizing to me than sorry. And last pannel, it almost look like a double facepalm, like she’s thinking “Great Frigg, he didn’t understand one word I say !”
That’s not a double facepalm, that is Rachel crying into her hands because she does (for some reason) love E-Merl, she just can’t give her heart only to him (and he’s being a total Best about it)
He handled that perfectly. Why don’t most people think that way. Of course, he could just be showing a brave face here and then goes all dark side later on. Cuz, you just know he’d look good as a baddie. Its the top hat.
I agree with Dashiar & Hawk; there’s no easy way to walk away from that kind of situation, but E-Merl handled it with grace and tact. Expecting him to be sunshine and bunnies when his heart is crumbling is not only unreasonable, it is terribly unkind.
Thanks for the education, I always thought the Peter Paul & Mary version was the original. Looks like they ran with it a year after Dylan did, but a lot of those folk singers were happily incestuous with each other’s songs so it’s no surprise.
Everybody has their own way to love. You have to understand his perspective, too. He doesn’t want a f**kbuddy kind of relationship, and she can only have that. It IS dumping him, and he is totally right to feel hurt and tell her that he is hurt.
And she wants to be his “love puppet”, she just can’t be. If she didn’t want to, she wouldn’t be crying over this. She probably wants to love him just the same as he loves her.
This is a perfect case of feelings and expectations colliding, I have experience with that. I hope Frigg goes and says something like “Oh for fuck’s sake, stop the goddamn drama and make out with him or whatever” thus creating an exception in the rules, lol
That’s just it: she can be his love-puppet, just not his besotted love-puppet (which is what she believes he needs, seeing how apparantly he puts everyone ahead of himself)
He’s not looking for just a love puppet, or even just a besotted love puppet. He’s looking for his other half; for the person he’ll grow old with.
He’s the kind of person that has half a heart, and he’ll never be complete till he bonds with the person who only has the other half. When he joins hearts with that person, it’ll make a heart big enough for both of them; big enough for a whole family, with room to spare.
For a person like that, a dalliance seems empty. A mere dalliance with the person who he believes is carrying the other half of his heart would be soul crushing.
She obviously wants a lifetime commitment, too, but she just keeps committing to the wrong things. (The sisterhoods and Frigg)
If/when they do end up together, I think she’ll find she has more love to share with everyone. Not less.
I mean, look and Byron and Syr’nj. Yeah, what a pair of selfish fucks, totally lacking in altruism or any drive to do good in the world, all because of THE SIN OF LOVE.
Basically, If you love someone, you’d do whatever you could to help them, even if it meant sacrificing something else…or someone else. Lots of someone else. Unyielding Open has a functional tenant to do the greatest good for the most people, and thus there is the caveat against loving one person specifically because it can distract from, or work against, that goal. Not always, probably not even very often, though in times of war, and especially for adventures, that probability skyrockets nicely (how many campaigns require a sacrifice of some sort – someone getting left behind, someone needing to die, that sort of bull pucky, so that the world isn’t overrun?), but the enjoiner against the behavior still stands.
Payet Best: “I… I don’t know where I am, right now, but I felt the universe calling upon me to offer advice about the best positions for loving one person a whole lot and loving the whole world a whole lot, at the same time. Basically, you have to start by acquiring plenty of lubricant, of both the alcoholic and intimate varieties. Then, – “
I still find it quite amusing that an order such as the Unyielding Open Heart sprang from the anger-filled, box-blocked musings (and abusings) of Frigg.
Then again…here we have another example of the Friggian box-block. Touche, you guys. Touche.
Awww :( I’m so saddened, I don’t have the heart to say ‘First!’
…you just did, you son of a mother!

Rachel sucks.
Actually, I think she’s refusing to do that too.
Actually, she did say, “We could have a dalliance”, which means – well, look it up.
In other woords, she might….

She moves in mysterious ways.
I don’t really see her doing much moving here.
So what then? Starfish?
Aaaaw hell
C’mon, Rach. Go ahead – share your heart with the world. Just reserve your cheeks (both sets) and your lips (ditto) for me. That’ll do.

I think this link showcases my reaction to this particular turn of events rather well.
Narm Charm?
That’s okay, E-Merl deserves to be with someone tolerable anyway. Maybe Bandit. They both have that street punk with a heart of gold and hidden talents but not much faith in themselves thing going on.
Mmm, hypothetical cookie goodness. And I can combine it with the Subway cookies I bought today too!
They sell cookies in the subway? Big cities must be magical!
And the streets are paved with cheese!
Well, the times I’ve visited certain cities, some roads were flagrantly fragrant.
Try Paris sometime. The aroma of the metro is truly unforgettable. No matter how many time you wash your clothes.

Okay. I get it. I get it. Can’t really disagree with her thinking if so.

You know, “perspective”.

I know that, just saying it can also look that way as well.
He handled that perfectly. Why don’t most people think that way. Of course, he could just be showing a brave face here and then goes all dark side later on. Cuz, you just know he’d look good as a baddie. Its the top hat.
I agree about his reaction. I could see him getting angry. However I don’t think he will.
But Rachel should go consult her “guru” about what to do really. I mean. What’s the worst that could happen?
…
Would E-Merl *survive* a hatefuck from Frigg??
I agree with Dashiar & Hawk; there’s no easy way to walk away from that kind of situation, but E-Merl handled it with grace and tact. Expecting him to be sunshine and bunnies when his heart is crumbling is not only unreasonable, it is terribly unkind.
E-Merl as a baddie? Hmmm…
“Now him, I could make a cultist. You can’t teach someone that kind of true bond with chaos.”
Let’s go back to that dalliance part for a bit?
Nice Dylan reference.
Yes – glad someone beat me to it.
Somebody needs to educamate these young’uns!
Thanks for the education, I always thought the Peter Paul & Mary version was the original. Looks like they ran with it a year after Dylan did, but a lot of those folk singers were happily incestuous with each other’s songs so it’s no surprise.
Awesome lighting. Perfect art for a heartwarming scene.
Rachel isn’t saying they can’t still get freakididly, just that she can’t be anything more, and that Lord Toffingbong deserves more
SHE IS NOT DUMPING HIM!!!! She just can’t be his besotted love-puppet (and he’s being a total Best about the whole thing

Yes, Rachel, because loving the world a whole lot and loving one person a whole lot in particular are TOTALLY INCOMPATIBLE POSITIONS.
Dope.
Order of the Harem Heart?

They’re Utilitarian.
It’s a Philosophy.

This order must have a Troll behind it. How else is she expected to share her heart with the world?
Item duplication glitch?
Poor E-Merl…you’ll get through this! :’)
