nah, this is more like scrunching up paper, trying to straighten it out again then scrunching it up again…wtf carol, you are moving dangerously close to “valued employee” territory here O.o
Google ‘fans webcomic’ (not that I’ve ever read it). It was one of T Campbell’s previous webcomics (I’m guessing the one immediately preceding Guilded Age here).
It ran until about a year ago, so T and Jason were working on it concurrently with Guilded Age for a while. Regardless “Big Nose” was one of the main characters, and something of a badass. Its a bit disconcerting to see the amount of hate directed at her here. She might be abrasive, but H.R. and (by extension) Carol are the bad guys here.
They are the bad guys but there is such a thing as a villain protagonist, a likable villain.. Etc. And well, there are unlikable protagonists. To me personally Shanna is one of these. To fans of the comic where she was last this might seem as wrong but considering opinions are always juat that – opinions, well… Everyone’s got their own and we should be accepting of that on a comment section that is public and exists for expressing just that – opinions. Doesnt mean they’re right or wrong.
Meh… the Fans characters always annoyed me. All of them. Bunch of neo-Christians with delusions of competence. Not exactly traditionalists, but every bit as self-righteous about it.
Man I was so sure we were gonna switch to Technicolor today. What’s Bandit up to with Gravy and Friggy? It’s OK. I am way more curious what is Dedalus gonna do with that forearm? Before Carol threw Ferris into the Pacific Ocean in Big Sur, She zipped open the body bag to take a peek. Think she noticed the missing body part? Is thay why she hurled?
She probably puked because she didn’t realize who was in the bag until she opened it.
I don’t think he hacked him up for that reason Woif. There seems to be a parallel between that arm he kept and the cult of countless limbs. This may be supported by the way he was just sort of watching their cult gathering earlier, going ‘maybe they have a point.’
The thing about working with magick (or magyk/magic) is that even if you tell someone about it, they’re not going to believe you. Heck, even saying you killed someone by employing the use of “mystical arts” would probably get you a good insanity defense.
I’m getting more and more convinced that Vampire Cheerleaders’ current arc is a dream sequence or psychic hallucination thing – and not in Guilded Age’s “events in the ‘less real’ world could directly matter” way, either – and that suspicion is making it really hard to enjoy that one right now.
To me, if this doesn’t end up tying in enough to the later events, I’ll probably just forget it ever happened.
Yeah, VC is kinda confusing: maybe not a dream sequence or hallucination, maybe more like an Alternate Reality seeing how Big Sis vanished completely from their timeline in a cloud of moth scales and that Thurstan vamp is a space Admiral (but, how did Suki end up outside the ship naked? o_O)
I dunno, I like how they have other characters and the world doesn’t revolve around the goblins getting impaled on spikes or beaten within an inch of their lives.
Okay, just read the lastest page, and the Wheel has turned full square and we are back where we left the goblins (really hope someone puts that sh!t dwarf ‘paladin’ down, for evil)
Personally, I suspect Carol is putting on a very good act. Maybe based on truth, and she is obviously disturbed by what happened to Ferris, but this seems like either a stall tactic or a way to lure Shanna into a trap.
I think it’s like a nervous habit. Lots of people bite their lip or stare at the ground or fidget with their hands and such. I think it’s something for her to look at that isn’t Shanna. (Or, you know, I suppose there could be something important on the phone screen too)
I like seeing how many people here just call Shanna “Bignose.”
I mean, don’t get me wrong, I liked Faans! Shanna, she was cool. But I can’t help but chuckle a little.
I’m in the “Shanna Might Die” camp, purely because I feel it’s incorrect to assume that just because she’s important in the Faans!verse that she won’t die in this one. This isn’t Faans!, guys. Shanna doesn’t really have anything protecting her, she’s wandering into a HIGHLY dangerous situation, and it’s totally possible for H.R. to snuff her out. I’m looking forward to seeing whether they go through with it or not. I can’t predict the immediate plot of this comic and I’m really digging that. Nice to have unforeseeable twists.
Damn, she folded so fast and hard that I would be suspicious if she hadn’t said magick with a k. Shanna always knew what she was doing and knew what to expect, down to the teary confession. Holy shit.
Do you believe in magick? In a young girl’s heart?
Where the truth sets ye free, and doesn’t blow the lid on your art?
It’s traaagic, how it ruins the scoop,
About saving the big-god-complex-CEO from that snoop.
Do you believe in magick?
HA! Called it. Carol’s folded like a tablecloth. And a good thing, too, because killing’s bad, mmkay?
The way she’s folding we might as well call it origami.
nah, this is more like scrunching up paper, trying to straighten it out again then scrunching it up again…wtf carol, you are moving dangerously close to “valued employee” territory here O.o
Actually, my odds on whats-her-name surviving this just went waaaay down.
Bignose. We call her Bignose. Anyway, at this point, hopefully something unpredictable happens, as opposed to Triumph of the Bignose.
…and all of the Faans readers facepalm simultaneously.

I hereby endorse this comment.

If the trope for likeable villain is “magnificent bastard”, what do you call an unlikeable hero? That’s Big Nose.
Your avatar fits perfectly with your comment.
Meh… the Fans characters always annoyed me. All of them. Bunch of neo-Christians with delusions of competence. Not exactly traditionalists, but every bit as self-righteous about it.
Shanna Bignose?
I half expected the alt text to be a song lyrics reference given the last line.
Then I realized how old some of those songs are, and what that means.
Dammit.
Just today I had someone not get a reference to 5309 and Jenny.
whats a 5309?;D
You know, of the 867 variety.
To Carol, every little thing he does is magick.
Yeesh! Even in Carol’s flashbacks, H.R.’s tie is still purple!
Aaaaand of course, NOW I read the alt-text.
I’m guessing H.R. Hacked up Ferris to make it easier to dispose of him, hence why she puked.
Cult? They’re just an ‘armless group of like-minded people.
Magic with a K. Serious stuff.
“Did you say magic?” “No, don’t be silly. Magick.”
Magick with a ‘k’.
Makes it more official.
Kinda like a shoppe. The “p e” stands for “pay extra.”
I am going to have to remember that one.
The ‘k’ stands for ‘killing’.
The M stands for Marvelous!
The extra D is for a Double Dose of Pimpin’
Think this is just a good excuse to tell us H.R’s motivations, which is a good thing. The whole God Mode thing felt kinda forced till now.
The thing about working with magick (or magyk/magic) is that even if you tell someone about it, they’re not going to believe you. Heck, even saying you killed someone by employing the use of “mystical arts” would probably get you a good insanity defense.
^ This. Just this.
So Carol’s spilled the beans on magic(k). Let’s see how far it goes with Shanna; let’s see how far it can go with anyone else beyond them.
And then.. then the giant unicorns burst from the floor and ate the body! then they told me what his password was and flew off into the sky!
Urgh, I honestly don’t know what’s worse anymore, this subplot here or Goblin’s romance subplot. It’s just getting plain annoying.

Goblins romance thing? You mean the Minmax and Kin thing?
I dunno, I like how they have other characters and the world doesn’t revolve around the goblins getting impaled on spikes or beaten within an inch of their lives.
Yeah, but how long ago did we last see any of the goblins though?
The GAP? 700 days, actually. In a comic called ‘Goblins’, that’s pretty long.
As it turns out, the story is just now returning to the main group (minus Chief, that poor bastard)
Thought Minnie was still trying to make Ken see how sorry he is and how much she means to him
Okay, just read the lastest page, and the Wheel has turned full square and we are back where we left the goblins (really hope someone puts that sh!t dwarf ‘paladin’ down, for evil)
This… This IS the plot.
See, it’s face-phrase matches like this that make me think Phil sometimes reads the comments and assigns the faces by hand based on what he reads.
Carol is a lot more childish than I thought she was.
Counting down until HR texts a spell through Carol’s phone and vaporizes Shanna’s face.
I don’t think childish is the right word. I think idealistic and naive are more appropriate.
And I can’t blame Carol for thinking that way. It’s just that idealism and naivete produces a lot of good intentions for paving roads.
*beep* “It’s for you” *boom*
Where the Exploding Runes spell is involved, the Internet is one hell of a force-multiplier.
“What does ‘I prepared Explosive Runes this morning’ mean?
That was hilarious indeed.
Am I the only the one that will be disappointed (in a good way) if they went back to fantasy world on Monday? I’m really digging last couple pages.
No, I agree, I’m enjoying this arc. I Enjoy most of the Sepia World arcs, and I’m normally a strict fantasy/medieval guy.
Personally, I suspect Carol is putting on a very good act. Maybe based on truth, and she is obviously disturbed by what happened to Ferris, but this seems like either a stall tactic or a way to lure Shanna into a trap.
Yep. This.
Really hoping that it is a trap
Yep this 2.
She does seem to have caved rather easily, even given the level of stress she’s been under.
I’d love if it were this. At the same time though, she’s saying way more than she really needs to if all she wanted was to lure Shanna into a trap.
Is no one going to comment on a guinea pig saying something reasonable?
Am I the only one who imagined Carol having a big Prince of Egypt style singing battle with HR to get him to stop? Anybody else? No?
For her next trick, Carol will tell Dana Scully she’s been abducted by aliens.
Looks like the shoulderpads got here early for that, though.
I’m a little unnerved at how she keeps staring at that cell phone.
I think it’s like a nervous habit. Lots of people bite their lip or stare at the ground or fidget with their hands and such. I think it’s something for her to look at that isn’t Shanna. (Or, you know, I suppose there could be something important on the phone screen too)
Shanna: badass in any and all universes in which she appears. Whee.
I’m digging this arc. Confrontation in all forms is cool.
Just curious about the Kickstarter status….
You and me both!
Seriously though, answers coming soon: Shit’s been way more complex than I knew going into it.
No worries; aren’t things always?
Thanks for the answer! :)
I am a little ashamed right now. I mean, who says ‘magick’? It’s really not pronounced any different, so why spell it different?
“Magick” is ickier, if what happened to Ferris is any indication.
So does she get more anatomically incorrect as time goes on?
And by time goes on I meant as she gets more and more distressed.
I like seeing how many people here just call Shanna “Bignose.”

At first I thought the final word there was “twits.”
When I saw that it was “twists,” I was like, “sure, those too.”
She reminds me of Princess Diana, though slightly exaggerated. It’s also how I imagine Tonks from Harry Potter.
Damn, she folded so fast and hard that I would be suspicious if she hadn’t said magick with a k. Shanna always knew what she was doing and knew what to expect, down to the teary confession. Holy shit.
