I’m with Harky, I can’t tell what the Don was actually suggesting. Goblino, if you’re trying to be an ass, be a bit clearer about it next time, lest we all think you’re actually TRYING to be a team player here.
I’m with the guys trying to figure out how Gobligno was trying to disparage and get Goblaurence into trouble. Was he trying to get him demoted from mechanic to mere foot soldier? ‘Coz saying “efficiency-minded” and “waiting for a chance to earn respect” after what he did is all the more reason to promote the fellow.
The Don is clearly a person who engineers his own destruction… And I’m starting to actually like Harky due to the fact that he seems to understand the kind of …person? The Don is, and is willing to take advice. That will hopefully lead to him not being just another bad guy, which is awesome
Okay, remember how the Don is, and how he thinks. He’s not trying to get Gobligno into trouble, he’s trying to piss off Harky.
To him, this guy is a troublemaker. Oh, he’s family, so he’s not to hard on him, and he does get stuff done, but he’s a burden. Everybody complains about him, and the Don doesn’t see the actual promise there.
His cousin is the guy who tells his bosses, loudly, when they are wrong. The Don shakes his head at that but then isn’t really listening when he gives the actual explanation that not only shows yes, they were wrong, but look, here’s the way to do it better.
So, he’s trying to foist off what he sees as an annoying guy off to Harky, assuming he’ll just continue to be annoying. The “positive spin” he’s putting on it is one part sarcasm, one part “take him off my hands, please” but mostly “okay you want a champion? Herrrreeee you go. Here’s this huge pain in the ass but he has qualifications so you’ll either be a chump and take him and had to swallow your pride or you’ll refuse him and look bad cause you can’t handle him and either way I got one over on you.”
Harky legit thinking the guy was good and being happy with him wasn’t in the Don’s plans. He likely envisioned that if Harky did take him, he’d be sullen about it. This just spoils all the fun.
Like others commenters, I am a bit unsure of what Don Gobligno wanted, but I tend to read it as Indomitable Erik upthread: Don Gobligno is going on the Starscream path.
[fridge logic on]
Actually, maybe we find him confusing because Don Gobligno is confused: on one hand, he is doing some good old nepotism – proposing his “third cousin” for promotion. And in the process, getting rid of his embarrassing un-goblinly relative (a mere mechanic, not a fierce warchief like Don Gobligno).
On the other hand, he clearly wouldn’t be happier if Harky went to stub his toes, figuratively speaking. Or he was simply hoping to have his “perfectly good candidate” rejected, so he can take offense of it. Either way, he would have have a pretext to gnaw at Harky’s authority.
I thank you for your service to the rebellion, Don Gobligno, and I shall remember it[…]
“That goblin that just demonstrated his competence is my good for nothing, efficiency-minded cousin, who doesn’t give a shit about being popular so long as the work gets done properly. Allow me to, for some reason, assume that none of that sounds appealing to you, and, knowing that I can only suggest ONE Goblin champion, insinuate that I’m going to foist him off on you for the gig. Also, I am an idiot.”
Oooh, “other combat mechanics” as in “other guys who build or repair machines for combat”, not “other rules for combat in RPGs”. In a story like this, it’s easy to see holes in the fourth wall even where there are none.
And holy winged earstalks, Don Gobligno really is the Rebellion’s version of Admiral Annunziata.
Yeah, I don’t think much of Harky’s backstory has been gone into, but I believe it’s been implied that the gem is bonded to him and is the source of his insane wolverine-level regeneration. Harky is no ordinary troll.
Goblaunce just got offered up as the Goblin “divine” champion, sarcastically. Either Harky is sassing back at the Don or was being serious about his appreciation of pointing out actually vibiale champion matieral. The Don just got lost in his own sarcasm. Actually I don’t think the Don was sarcastic enough, “Says, Sure, Mere.” He needed “friends, he, waiting, divine, deserves, better”. If your going sarcastic you have to go full force. Apply too little and people with the subtly of blunt force trama may think you’re serious.
Just wanted to stop in and comment on the great writing in giving the non-humans real character while keeping their alien culture and savagery intact. I am loving this arc due to that. As this is a difficult writing feat usually you find them written as over civilized funny looking people or irrationally violent cannon fodder instead, especially in your webcomic and pop culture circles. (WoW I’m looking at you.)
I grow less and less impressed with this Don.
You were impressed?
Hey, that’s some wits he’s displaying there. I’m now sure the Don graduated kindergarten.
At least attended it.
Or at least was escorted to the front door by his mother
Without too much biting, screaming, and carrying on.
I was half expecting Harky to kill him there, and replace him with Globlaurence…
He has less props than Dr.Eggman and his props are in the negatives.
I’d thought Goblins were simply named Gob-something as a racial thing, but perhaps it’s just a family name instead?
The name thing comes across as kinda awkward, to be quite honest.
I’m with Harky, I can’t tell what the Don was actually suggesting. Goblino, if you’re trying to be an ass, be a bit clearer about it next time, lest we all think you’re actually TRYING to be a team player here.
I’m thinking he meant it as a challenge; he seems to be implying that his cousin is too full of himself and produces nothing of value.
The goblins are mafiosos…not having any friends in the family puts you low on the totem pole.
Ohh he got denied whatever it was he was hoping he was doing!
He was hoping to antagonize Harky with a shitty candidate. Instead he gave him a really good candidate.
This. Goblins are better known for blowing things up than making them work, I think it was?
Maybe he can make blowing things up work.
He’s so startled he’s trying to flap away with his ears.

Pretty much!
The thing about people like Don Gobligno is that they always assume everyone else thinks the same way they do.
Yep.
All Hail Goblaurence! King of Efficiency and Master of Deus Ex!
“Shut it with hailing and git back to work!”
Like others commenters, I am a bit unsure of what Don Gobligno wanted, but I tend to read it as Indomitable Erik upthread: Don Gobligno is going on the Starscream path.

I believe the pecking order just got reasserted.
Well… Your mother!
Yeah! That thing and all. Shove it!

“Now watch as I try to fly away with my tiny little wing ears”
Possibly a little cold, but it’s still one of the most civil firings ever.
Contrast it with a termination at Hurricane, for instance.
Dat feel when a (divinely infused) troll warlord has better loyalty rewards than a (supposedly progressive) human CEO.

wait… is there a gem in that troll’s tummy? <–probably not news to anyone else.
Yeah, I don’t think much of Harky’s backstory has been gone into, but I believe it’s been implied that the gem is bonded to him and is the source of his insane wolverine-level regeneration. Harky is no ordinary troll.
So snatch the gem out of Harky body, and he’s toast, then. Is that it ?
Nah, after that he’s still a troll and just has regular amount of troll regen instead of godly amounts.
You’d think the hole made by ripping the gem out of his gut would be a good start, though.
Sounds to me like Gobosauce was just promoted into The Don’s position (but probably reading it wrong and he’s just the goblin Champion)

oh god my insides.
I AM PLEASED THAT THE SMALL MINDED GREEN HUMANOID CREATURE HAS BEEN LEFT WITH ONLY THE STANDARD RESPONSE WHEN LEFT SPEECHLESS.

Expecting a fight and not getting one feels a lot like when you expect there to be one more step in the staircase.
