Look for the bare atrocities
The simple bare atrocities
Forget about your worries and cause some strife
I mean the bare atrocities
Old Tectonicus’ recipes
That help the bare atrocities take a life.
Wherever I wander, wherever I roam
I slaughter what enters my big home
The flies are buzzin’ around the corpse
Of a dead fighter and his hor(p)se
When I look under the rocks and stones
And get a jones from the piles o’ bones
Then maybe make some new
The bare atrocities of life will come for you
They’ll come for you!
Look for the bare atrocities
The simple bare atrocities
Forget about your worries and cause some strife
I mean the bare atrocities
That’s why a gnoll can’t rest in peace
With just the bare atrocities of life
Does anyone else think Auraugu’s words were inspired by / are a reference to Paul Laurence Dunbar’s “We Wear the Mask”? Guilded Creators, feel free to give the definitive answer.
Even if it wasn’t intentional, it certainly has a resemblance, and I think it’s perfect to share right now.
WE wear the mask that grins and lies,
It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,—
This debt we pay to human guile;
With torn and bleeding hearts we smile,
And mouth with myriad subtleties.
Why should the world be over-wise,
In counting all our tears and sighs?
Nay, let them only see us, while
We wear the mask.
We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries
To thee from tortured souls arise.
We sing, but oh the clay is vile
Beneath our feet, and long the mile;
But let the world dream otherwise,
We wear the mask!
Great poem! I think originally the idea of using masks as a metaphor for social personifications comes from ancient Greece and their theatrical tradition. Either that, or a Fugees song.
New one on me, Loki. It’s a nice poem with a sentiment I’ve certainly heard before. But I don’t think Auraugu is crying on the inside as the speaker in the poem seems to be. He feels that one’s mask should actually match one’s soul, and that once Penk’s does, he’ll have more success.
Thanks for responding. Interesting; this idea that a mask doesn’t have to be a hider-of-sorrow is very new to me. I hope you’ll explore it more (and perhaps you’ve already planned to in this very chapter).
Is it that strange a sentiment?
There is a phrase I’ve used several times when talking to people: “I did not choose the face I was born with, so I don’t see myself in it. My face is the one I choose to wear.”
The mask, the true mask, is that one that shows us as we really are. That mask is difficult to find, hard to gain, and harder to wear. But is the only one that makes you YOU.
One obviously does not get to be Champion of the Fuzzy Peoples without knowing ahead of time when one’s wisdom is needed, and how to arrange a reason to be there to give it.
Auraurgu’s mask being there wasn’t an accident. It “fell off… in that tree… somehow…” solely as a pretext for him to come over and give Penk advice about being himself.
I really hope so. Seems like both sides have some valid points and some real bastards, and it would make me really sad if they ended up killing each other when working together could have been an option.
Wise words fuzzy friend.
For being such a silly shite…dude’s got a lot of wisdom and over all good naturedness about him. Like a fuzzy, non-stoic Gravedust.
I don’t think munch of that chewing pun.
Gnaw, man, it’s a real kick in the teeth.
please, your puns are just gnawful
Well hey, just throwing in my two bits, but I rather like the flavor of this conversation.
I wish you all had better taste in jokes.
Hey, wordplay is our salivation from a boring day.
After all, humour is the spice of life. And everyone likes dishes better when they’ve got some bite.
Careful there, all these comments are starting to get a bit prickly.
this thread’s really dishing out a licking. somehow though, i just want molar.
Me just want cookie!
^ perfect gnawatar for that comment.
Auraugu reveals himself to be surprisingly deep. Hopefully the kid will take a moment to gnoll over his words.
Auraugu, the Love Guru.
The love aurauguru
Yes! My favorite antagonist lives! *leg drops in celebration*
Aw yay! Wolf-guy lived!
Auraugu has game (within a game, within a webcomic).
sounds like Dune – plots within plots within plots.
^ seems like something this character would intone… through his mouth piece that is.
Life sucks when societal pressures go against what you know to be right.
Is it bad I read that in Holly’s voice?
It would have been bad if you didn’t
I think the point is that Penk lacks a full sense of his personal identity. He doesn’t even know what’s “right” yet.
I am expecting him to break out in a heartwarming rendition of “Bear necessities”
Heart warming? Nah. How about heart stabbing!

+1
I like to imagine how Auraugu starts with a spoken “Heart warming? Nah. How about heart stabbing!” before he breaks into song… +1 from me, too.
Is there someone who is going to collect all the GA-Lyrics? We could have a GA-Songbook!
When he’s not trying to kill you, that gnoll wrestler… seems like quite a nice, cheerful guy.
He seemed that way when he WAS trying to kill you.
Um, cheerful when trying to kill you isn’t nice. That’s more of sociopathic. He definitely didn’t come off as affable that way.
You know,I yet isn’t smart of him to leaf that mask lying around.

We all wear masks, Mr. Ipkiss; metaphorically speaking.
Great poem! I think originally the idea of using masks as a metaphor for social personifications comes from ancient Greece and their theatrical tradition. Either that, or a Fugees song.
People have been talking about metaphorical masks for thousands of years.
Auraugu is always generous, whether he is handing out love advice or elbow drops.

Yeah, masks are typically depicted in prose and fiction as something sorrowful, or a lie.
I sincerely doubt that a Luchador would agree with that.

I already root for these guys as much as I do for the MCs, and I’m guessing this chapter will give me more reasons to do so.
I am guessing it will ultimately be a cosmic team-up with all the characters taking on HR and his godlike magic!
I really hope so. Seems like both sides have some valid points and some real bastards, and it would make me really sad if they ended up killing each other when working together could have been an option.
For season 2 faans fans. Penk is Baxter (and I could say Strulks is Di, but nah).
I choose this mask. Do you guys like it?
Something tells me we’re not talking about people who morphing cars and gratuitious toy sales.. (Oy, I feel old)
I had a bunch of those toys when I was growing up. Heck, I think I still have them in a box in my garage.
I like this guy
Auraugu is just so -HAPPY- all the time!
I can’t stand it, it’s so adorable. And he’s deep, too. Were I a she-gnoll, I’d be all over that.
