That is an awful lot of trust for someone that is yet to be tested in combat.
The one victory Penk had was on top of a rhino, so a lot of heart and mouth is all we have seen so far of Penk.
He jumped into a volcano and retrieved an item of power and was deemed worth to be an avatar of a god. And survived to tell the tale. I’m pretty sure he has divine super powers now :). So its not that far fetched to have confidence in him.
This is incredible story-writing. All sides to this conflict are being developed deeply so that there are no one-dimensional bad guys or good guys. Even the cultists are lead by a well-intentioned man, trying to free some people he got stuck in an experiment, who has been driven to instability in his desperation. You can’t just immediately dismiss that, even if he is emotionally dominating his secretary. If we don’t get back to the Gastonian gang soon I’m going to like the World’s Champions more!
Oh yeah. Like totally. I guess that is as Grinch/Goblaurance gets. However: I wanna know what happened to HR’s mini me. An while I’m on the subject, where’s that hapless newbe cultist that Bro Tom sent to dimensions unknown? Also I think I am crushing on the reporter with the big schnoz. I miss her sepia face.
Who says HR is leading the cultists? I think the only thing we know is that he pushed a button to give them some view (or was it full-fledged access?) to yet another Tron-like world.
He’s kind of their inspiration, though, and he is enabling them (he gave them the haxorz skillz). He’s effectively a distant god-figure for them, even if they are only vaguely aware of who he is (and really, how many religions can claim more?).
But HR created (or something) the whole damn world. The cultists may just be a subconscious tendency surfacing, or something like that. And now? Not subconscious anymore. They have his attention. He’s actively feeding them power, now.
Even HR now thinks he merely ‘discovered’ the world instead of creating it. A possibility which grows more and more likely as time goes on.
Based on the rule of perception, there’s little reason to believe HR and the cultists have been in contact in any way until recently. Further, whether or not he’s empowering them now is irrelevant to how and from where they got their power in the past, which is exceedingly unlikely to be HR.
Given how the portal looked, though, the source of the Countless Limb’s power could be related to how he learned magic. It could be there’s a being from an unseen world using HR to influence Arkerra indirectly.
Or, four beings. I mean, what’s more likely? That T, Phil, and the Waltrips created these amazing worlds, beautiful images and riveting stories, or that they sacrificed their limbs to create a portal, to gain the ability to see and influence these preexisting universes?
Lemme see if I got this right: Penk already said he was Direction, so the rest:
Muscle – of course HAMMERHEAD
Heart – I think, Magda?
Brains – of course Goblaurence
Eyes – probably Rana
Courage – gotta be Arooowooo, he’s the only one left
Or have I got this wrong?
I’m not very good at checking details*, but now that I notice it, I guess if this comic was animated, in addition to his armor two sizes bigger, his voice would be two age categories older. Picture the Scout from TF2 wearing full plate and now voiced by Frank Sinatra.
* My best spot check was Byron doodling in the sand something that, based on what the cultists did afterwards, might be the Countless One, just after the rabies-induced PTSD (Post-Totalpartykillandrez-stress-disorder)
Not just that, hard armor is actually kind of pointless without some padding beneath. Otherwise the shock of the blows it’s deflecting tend to shatter your body anyway.
If only I had known this before I grabbed a plywood shield and told my friend to hit it as hard as he could with a tree limb. Ouch. My bare arm sure felt that impact. Wasn’t shattered though, just stunned. And in a real fight that would’ve been bad enough.
So I can’t help but wonder what became of Harky after yanking out his bellybutton gem thing. Is he still alive, is he still huge, and if so will he no longer be immortal?
Well, he was addressing the crowd just a page or two ago, so I’m assuming he’s still alive. He doesn’t look to be huge, but then I’m not sure he ever was.
Still alive, and still bigger than Penk and smaller than HAMMERHEAD.
As for immortal, he did say his bond with Tectonicus was strong enough that he no longer needs the fireseye. So at the very least, he thinks he is. We’ll know for sure when someone kills him.
Did I miss something? Penk just said they need to unite against Gastonia “and the cultists”. When did they learn about the cultists, never mind determine them as a threat? Or is this Divine Wisdom of some sort?:)
Cultists existing is something everybody knows about. They might not know of any nefarious plan involving sapient sacrifice that opens a portal to a nether dimension that might possibly hold a previously arrogant bard… but they know they’re not nice people and that it’s important to stand against the Cultists on a matter of principle. Plus with the time skips and other disjointed stuff, it’s possible that the Cultists made a more public move that the audience isn’t aware of yet.
Hammerhead is definitely my favorite.
Goblaurence approves. In the end, that’s what matters.
That is an awful lot of trust for someone that is yet to be tested in combat.

Are you BAAAAAKA? Of course he doesn’t approve, how can you suggest Goblaurence-sensei would even consider him? Goblaurence-sensei is best!
My favorite part of this strip is that HAMMERHEAD is tagged in all caps.
HAMMERHEAD has always been tagged in all caps. In all the strips. :o
It’s how his named is spelled. Hammerhead is a completely different dude, and the pronunciation of his name is different.
It just doesn’t have the right amount of low-frequency reverb unless you properly pronounce the all-caps.
If his name doesn’t set off car alarms, you’re saying it wrong.
Awesomeness is case-sensitive.
High praise, Goblaurence.

I’m pretty sure that cultist *turned* into the portal.
The cultists had their presence, their cause, and their powers long before HR started getting involved with them.

The worlds may never know.

Or have I got this wrong?
Well yea. Everyone except for Auraugu has been confirmed for their roles in a previous strip and Auraugu as courage just makes sense.
Auraugu was described (jokingly, but accurately) as the balls of the team. So yeah, ‘courage.’
Sounds legit.
HAHAHA, that hovertext.
By their powers combined he is Captain Earth’s Molten Core!
Go Magma!
Never! All will be drowned in righteous waves, so that our true God, Kyogre, will rise from the depths and rule all! [/Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire ref]
“fire”
“lava”
“magma”
“explosion”
“big rocks”
*together* “GO MOLTEN!”
You forgot that Goblaurence is also the ass.
Maybe the dick… not sure…
He’s multifaceted.
Nah. Dick’s job is to screw things. Goblaurence’s job is to shit on things.
Don’t limit your anatomical analogy making. He can be all three…as the cloaca of the group.
Notice me, Penk Sempai!
Of course he’s also Tectonicus’ avatar now Magda, can’t you see he has scribble text too now?
scribble-text?
The scribbly dialogue text. Harky has it and now Penk has it after volcano diving.
I’m not very good at checking details*, but now that I notice it, I guess if this comic was animated, in addition to his armor two sizes bigger, his voice would be two age categories older. Picture the Scout from TF2 wearing full plate and now voiced by Frank Sinatra.

So does Goblaurence bend all his cigarettes, or does he buy them like that?
He probably just rolls them himself. Additionally, it looks like they are in a very hot climate so maybe that is a factor.
We shall see if his cigarettes turn erect in wintertime.
Goblaurence is so tsundare. Desu desu, sugoi!
I bet Magda is a yandere. We’ll just have to wait and see.
And we have Aura UGUUUU!!!
That terrifies me. D:
Damnit Tsenzei, that cracked me up.
Wish I’d thought of that. UGU~
dat picture
tsun tsun dere tsun, dere tsun tsun~
Tsundere Cats?
The armor looks like it fits Penk much better without that ridiculous helmet on.
Yeah, I’m less compelled to crack his limbs and suck out the delicious flesh inside, now.
[/looks like a delicious cooked crustacean]
HA Now you sound a less depraved!
I just realized the side horns are there to contain his long pointed ears
Wait, is Penk still wearing his old armour/skins as well as the new Tec-armour?
Well wearing armour directly on the skin would get a bit uncomfortable after a while
Not just that, hard armor is actually kind of pointless without some padding beneath. Otherwise the shock of the blows it’s deflecting tend to shatter your body anyway.
Huh.
If only I had known this before I grabbed a plywood shield and told my friend to hit it as hard as he could with a tree limb. Ouch. My bare arm sure felt that impact. Wasn’t shattered though, just stunned. And in a real fight that would’ve been bad enough.
Hmm, well, if Auraugu is “courage” than “hairy bollocks” was spot on.
The team finally grew some Auraugu
So I can’t help but wonder what became of Harky after yanking out his bellybutton gem thing. Is he still alive, is he still huge, and if so will he no longer be immortal?

WHEN? Why do you be so mean, Al-chan?
that armor still looks ridiculous, though a bit more bearable without the helmet on
Well, it IS an MMO. Frankly, I’m suprised more ridiculous armor hasn’t been showing up.
I don’t care if I’m playing a barbarian that hasn’t invented chest armor, I demand shoulder pads at least twice as big as my head!

see this is going to end in tears, because now we like our villains. So half of these guys are probably going to die, and the rest will gang up on HR!
Now whe I look at him I see a king.
