The Keytar weapon seems to agree with this theory, but WAV’s demeanor is almost the exact opposite of Best’s. Unless you were referring to the soul, which is very likely not Best’s.
But if that portal did send Best to Cyberia, and he went through serious character development there… Okay, now I’m confusing myself.
He died in Arkerra, and returned to life in Cyberia. He probably doesn’t remember his life in Arkerra, just as all of the Five seem to have forgotten their lives in Sepia World.
Perhaps the player of Best in Arkerra also had a character account in Cyberia for some time; WAV certainly looks like some kind of leveled-up cyber-musician of some sort. I think that, when Best died in Arkerra, his player either found a hacked portal from Cyberia to Arkerra or hacked the portal himself.
if it really is the shit elf and he really is the complete opposite of his former self it would only be for the better. but i hope WAV is an original character. not a reborn.
It could still be Best, the player, having experienced and played as a completely different character in a completely different game without access to any of his experiences as Payet Best.
Best’s big issue was he’d sold himself on a bullshit prophecy that turned out to not even be his. If he didn’t have that puffing him up unduly, and had other social forces turning him in other directions, it’s not even unlikely that he might turn out quite a bit differently.
The question is what will happen if/when he, as WAV, remembers being Payet Best.
Remember Best interview a while back? He said he had “many stage personna”, maybe each personna use a different music style so “Best” was one and WAV is another?
Yeah, I was wondering the same thing myself – is shooting a soul-imbued arrow at something that obliterates souls really a good idea? I guess it’s possible that the soul did something so horrid in life that it’s willing to risk obliteration for redemption if it does score the killing blow, but even so…
Remember that was just the one soul who said that in the first place, not this one . . . and it might be that gravedust considers it safe to shoot once the corrupter beast begins to distort, as it is shown to here.
Gravey is taking an gamble. He knows if the beast is allowed to continue living, more souls will be lost. So he is risking one soul in the hopes of saving many.
As to why a soul would allow himself to be shot at the beast, perhaps it hadn’t yet made the observation the early soul that talked to Gravedust had. Or perhaps the soul Gravey is shooting is made of sterner stuff. Or more willing to risk it all to save loved one’s he/she knows are in the area and are at risk.
This particular soul I believe was one killed by the Cultists. As such, I imagine he would want seriously to stop whatever the cultists were doing and having not met the Beast first hand, is not especially frightened of it.
Who wants to take a bet the lovely Dwarven..Shaman? Fire Shaper..forgot title…freaks out when she sees a living Mystic standing in front of her, fighting with the Peacekeepers?
If nothing else, the Peacekeepers are not unknown to the World’s Rebellion. She may not have met him in person yet, but she has certainly been made aware of the identities of the main antagonists to her group. There may be some interesting interaction between the two, sure, but I see no reason for her to “freak out.”
Well, I doubt Ivar told anyone that the last living Mystic is fighting for the Gastonians. He quietly had the Mystics killed off because they had sway with the Savasi and would not have allowed them to join the rebellion. If it came to light that he murdered them in secret, then that would be something.
I’ve been looking forward to seeing what shape their future conversation might take for quite a few pages now.
Gravy would be only too happy to talk to her, that’s his style. Her respect for the mystics, even though she disagrees with them, might suggest the same of her. But it’s also true that things could slide into mutual accusations and recriminations all too easily…
As a writer and aficionado of poetry, especially when used to Call Power, I must inform you that Gravedust’s invocation brought tears to my eyes. The strength of his respect for, and the willpower behind his collusive use of, the spirits of those who have passed is so evident in that brief scene.
Thank you for a remarkable experience this morning. I look forward to many more.
While I usually roll my eyes at “It’s Best!” theories, I have to say, if WAV doesn’t turn out to be Best (or be controlled by his player), then the authors are seriously trolling us.
No, I don’t think that’s a contradiction. Some trolls are pretty serious in what they do to f*** up other peoples’ lives. Take note of the real world Washington DC for an example.
Yeah Bet you and lose. No telling what she would think bout that. I immediately thought Payet Best. But i agree with the naysayers here Robot is just so unbesty. I cant see Payet Best playing keyboard
Wait a minute… BEST?!

This is my working theory so far as well.
Harder, Bester, Faster, Stronger.
falling into a vortex is not a guarantee of death.

And were the achievements he had earned while in Arkerra per-character, or per-account? Seems like per-character, so far. :3
My first thoughts exactly.
I think a few people called it when he fell into that other worldly magical pit of doom Evil Dead style.
Except Best played a guitar, not a keyboard.
ah but you will notice, that there is neither, it is a keytar
SEMANTICS! MUSICAL INSTRUMENT IS MUSICAL INSTRUMENT!
AND EVERY MUSICAL INSTRUMENT IS PLAYED BY THE SAME CHARACTER! IT’S FOR THE BEST!
Is that a pun?
Excuse me that’s a keyTAR, that means it counts!
So he is going to tar -cvf the beast?
He’s quite laconic, so, just tar -cf the\ beast
This is the first time that I’ve believed WAV might just be wearing a helmet, so there may be a recognisable face under there.
Digibest!
There’s definitely a pointy chin under that helmet!
Panel 2 would seem to suggest just that!
yeahhh, it’s probably weird that spotting a chin was the most exciting part of this page for me
That was my exact response to this strip.
No! It’s Frigg!
Best is the green monster. Arguably he was always a green monster…
You shouldn’t prose whilst carrying sharp weapons, Gravy. You might put an eye out.
Yes. Put out ALLL the EYES!
You’re avatar is so appropriate right now.
But you have to admit, he sure does know how to get his point across…
Wow, it’s a KEYTARSWORD!
KEYTARZAN! HE’S A KEYTARMAN!
KEYTAR HERO!
If he was from Dragonlance, he would be KEYTARA!
I don’t think it’s Best, Best is a classic rock sorta guy and wouldn’t want to cover his face with a Daft Punk helmet.
Remember Best interview a while back? He said he had “many stage personna”, maybe each personna use a different music style so “Best” was one and WAV is another?
Good point.
At least he isn’t a Lady “meatface” Gaga or Britney “Aunt Fester” Spears many stage persona.
So I guess there’s a window of time before stuff gets dissolved? Hopefully so, otherwise Gravedust just oblivion’d that poor soul.
Gravedust just composed the annihisong by ad libbing and you think only one soul is going to explode?
The thing is, I thought the ghosts refused to be shot at the Beast. Y’know, for that very reason.
Yeah, I was wondering the same thing myself – is shooting a soul-imbued arrow at something that obliterates souls really a good idea? Gravedust Deserthammer once again proves that he breathes power metal.
And no one is surprised.
Shoot! Gravedust just darted in there, didn’t he?
He’s just delivering Power Point to a Pupil.
AYE.
All in favor of this being the best comment, say EYE!
I
Except he’s not aiming at the eye. His point actually follows his companion’s notes.
Who wants to take a bet the lovely Dwarven..Shaman? Fire Shaper..forgot title…freaks out when she sees a living Mystic standing in front of her, fighting with the Peacekeepers?
I do! I’m betting on her freaking out!
I’M FREAKING OUT, MAN!
…why would she?
If nothing else, the Peacekeepers are not unknown to the World’s Rebellion. She may not have met him in person yet, but she has certainly been made aware of the identities of the main antagonists to her group. There may be some interesting interaction between the two, sure, but I see no reason for her to “freak out.”

I’ll take that bet. She even mentions at one point that she believed the Savasi to be “misguided”.
I’ve been looking forward to seeing what shape their future conversation might take for quite a few pages now.

THE BEST OFFENSE IS A BEST OFFENSE.
people had Best not take offence at that.
That’s the Best anyone can really hope for.
I can totally hear Gravy’s word sound in my head like Orson Welles reading the intro to Manowar’s “Defender”…
He is Gitaroo Man!
I just wanted him to ind the invocation with the words… “by our power, blue arrows flight”, then the GL homage woulda be perfect.
Okay, yeah, all aboard the Best Train, Toot Toot.
Gravedust adding sultry, expressive vocals on top of WAV’s synth explosion. New 80s band:
WAVdust.
I would so listen to that!
OMG they could, like, totally start a band!!
Awesome update!
Number one power cover song: Best I ever had.
As a writer and aficionado of poetry, especially when used to Call Power, I must inform you that Gravedust’s invocation brought tears to my eyes. The strength of his respect for, and the willpower behind his collusive use of, the spirits of those who have passed is so evident in that brief scene.

Light and laughter,
SongCoyote
Man. I’ve always wanted to get a Keytar. WAV might be my dream mancrush hero.
While I usually roll my eyes at “It’s Best!” theories, I have to say, if WAV doesn’t turn out to be Best (or be controlled by his player), then the authors are seriously trolling us.
…Wait, is “seriously trolling” a contradiction?
No, I don’t think that’s a contradiction. Some trolls are pretty serious in what they do to f*** up other peoples’ lives. Take note of the real world Washington DC for an example.

Oh, his name is WAV. I get it. I wonder if Gravey is rhyming in beat with the sweet keytar solo.
I see Best has been training at the Daft Punk school of music.
Good heavens I freaking *adore* the poetic invocations Gravedust uses. They stir my soul.
