Obviously, they had not the time to weld those bolts shut, allowing Bandit to remove them.
They were going to do it this week, but the invasion started on a Monday, and the factory had planned a … Tuesday Weld.
Not a bad idea.
I guess they care more about preventing the superweapon from being used than they care about killing the pilots.
Which is generally admirable, but then again Bandit knows who is piloting it and is anyone not in agreement that it would be nice to get rid of His Shortness?
Weeeeelll…let’s not forget that these two guys are guilty of selling out Gnometown to the Gastonian war machine (ironically by designing war machines for Gastonia) and as far as I remember they already have tried to kill Bandit (indirectly using deadly traps while she was pursuing them) though I could be misremembering that.
In any case, she probably wouldn’t consider it unjust to execute these guys along with their physically, emotionally, intellectually, and morally stunted boss.
Or so I interpret her character. I mean SHE doesn’t know they’re already regretting their role in all this. As far as she knows, they’re 100% on board with what Taro is doing right now.
I suspect that blowing the arm is a quicker solution and has a better chance of succeeding. Lots of moving parts that can be mangled even if the blast isn’t entirely successful. Heck, with the bolts gone and part of levered off by Sundar’s great sword, I wouldn’t doubt if the next blast would rip off the arm anyways.
But the idea that the thing won’t be able to fire with the arm disabled is only a theory, whereas we know it won’t be able to fire with its crew dead. And disabling the arm is not the quicker option given the elaborate way they’re doing it. Begs another question, nobody inside had heard their elaborate (de)construction project?
I’m still confident that Frigg and silver surfer are going to play a part in this, which means this attempt can’t be completely dispositive. I suspect it can still fire, or be overloaded, even if it can’t aim. Remember that “probably” when this plan was first floated? That’s a checkhov’s gun if I’ve ever heard one.
Well it’s not a mere theory. Rendar is one of the chief engineers who built the thing (under duress). If he says it’s a fail-safe they built into the thing, he’s almost certainly right. He would know.
Plus, it makes sense. Firing the weapon without stabilizers would pretty much flip the thing over and kill its pilot(s), while the projectile flies off in unpredictable ways, and ultimately would wreck the machine. Making the gun not fire in such a situation is a good feature.
Hmmm… Come to think of it, in that last panel Bandit is standing next to a metal door. Could be that the explosion will be large enough to take out that door, granting the heroes entrance. Maybe they’re trying to kill two birds with one stone?
I was gonna complain about how shoddy the worksgnomeship is that they could just peel out all the bolts in the few seconds it takes Sundar to climb up but… Eh.
Actually, Sundar stayed down a bit longer so he could toss up the toolbox for his brother while bandit got a head start on the bolts (see panel 3). Then he had to climb up one handed while carrying the explosive logs. Which he probably had to go up multiple times to get them all up considering how many are wedged under that thing so we are probably seeing him on his last round when they have all those bolts loose.
I checked the panel were he is bringing up the explosives and he has only five and since we can see that at least seven are under the weapon arm, that means at least two trips were made
The laborers were probably just building the machine according to the example of their glorious leader. He’s got most of his screws loose, so the screws and bolts on the machine are similarly loose.
Uh, none of their comments have ever come across literally. The entire ‘brother’ lines all seem to be very much in terms of “Brothers in arms” not literal brothers.
And I’d just like to give your web-fu person a big thumbs up on taking steps to stop duplicate comments, something even big name websites can’t even manage to do.
Fire in the asshole!
Fire in the…Taco Bell!
Don’t you mean Taro Bell?
Danger! Danger!
High voltage!
Gods, I love it when a plan comes together!
I guess in a moment we will see whether Taro’s Toy Tank Engine will end up resembling a moose with glowing balls…
Sabotaging a working machine is an atrocity in the eyes of Cog.
Luckily, He has a sense of humor, too.
*sees Panel 8*
LOVE BLOOMS ON THE BATTLEFIELD!
Well, no. That would be incest, which is banned by the Comics Code Authority. See their little stamp in the top right corner of-
Wait. Do those guys still exist?
Nope. Archie was the last publisher submitting to them, and they stopped years ago.
Woo! Game of Thrones shenanigans are on the table! And on the couch! And on the carpet! And everywhere else!
Wait what, they’re related? Hmmm… damn, guess I’m not keeping track very well.
Oh, I didn’t realize that. Guess I haven’t kept up with the secondary cast very well. :\
This isn’t CK2. Keep the wincest to a minimum.
Oh no. It’s going to shoot at someone/something important next page.
It’s gonna go way off course, directly into I.C’s maw.
Obviously, they had not the time to weld those bolts shut, allowing Bandit to remove them.

I learned something! What an interesting person. And with a name like that, she never played a Bond girl? :D
And here I was thinking they probably should have riveted that.
I’d think they’re rivets, not bolts, from the technology level and their appearance.
So apparently the rivets were not bucked, and apparently a wrench is somehow effective in removing them?
Wait … If they can just climb on that thing unmolested, why not blow the hatch and kill whoever’s inside?
Not a bad idea.
I guess they care more about preventing the superweapon from being used than they care about killing the pilots.
Which is generally admirable, but then again Bandit knows who is piloting it and is anyone not in agreement that it would be nice to get rid of His Shortness?
Too bad His Shortness isn’t the only one in there. Bandit isn’t the one who enjoys killing bystanders.
Plus, he’s got a gun. Why risk your own safety and the success of the mission when you can just disable the weapon with relatively little struggle?

Slave labor.
You get what you pay for.

Are they logs, or just powder bags?
Looks like powder bags – you can see some pouring out in the last panel.
I checked the panel were he is bringing up the explosives and he has only five and since we can see that at least seven are under the weapon arm, that means at least two trips were made

Guilded Age: Brotherhood?
Ha! My Sundar/Rendar ship is rewarded!
Um. They’re brothers
Like a little detail like incest stops shippers…
Uh, none of their comments have ever come across literally. The entire ‘brother’ lines all seem to be very much in terms of “Brothers in arms” not literal brothers.
They’re brothers.
“I love it when a plan comes together!”
Col. John ‘Hannibal’ Smith
Good thing plans always end up in flames!
Damn it, where’s Scipio and his cigar when you need him!
This, people, is why you do not operate tanks without infantry support.
Obligatory d’aaawwwwwwww! ^_^
So many puns about disarming the tank coming with the next page.
And I’d just like to give your web-fu person a big thumbs up on taking steps to stop duplicate comments, something even big name websites can’t even manage to do.
(b^.^)b
OK, what’s pouring out of Rendar’s bag with the triple X mark in panel 2?
Assuming you mean panel 5, I think it’s gunpowder.
Breadcrumps for phoenixes.
That makes one very angry sword smith.
