Farewell, Part One
For today’s page, we asked Erica to draw whatever she liked as a farewell piece, and she gave us this lovely exchange. Whether such soul-baring is actually part of the upcoming chapters, or a poignant moment that will never be, would, of course, be a spoiler.
So…beautiful… T__T
The easiest way to keep track of me now would be failatlife.blogspot.com
Did you register that to mock those of us who actually GENUINELY fail?
normally Syr’Nj isn’t my favorite-looking character, but she’s pretty awesome here, both outfit-wise and general appearance. Byron looks pretty sweet too!
Syr’nj is looking prettier and prettier lately.
I’m really sad to see the change of artists, though, the art was what drew me into the comic in the first place. Not that the characters and story aren’t awesome, but they take some time to hook you. Art is immediate.
Syr’Nj is the most prettiful in this page as she has ever been. Almost as prettiful as Byron, whose near-androgyny almost makes me wonder if I’m actually into guys. Then I remind myself that penis isn’t exactly my sexual prerogative. :C
it’s OK, Bishie’s do that to people.
Is it just me, or does Byron’s face never seem all that expressive when any kind of non-combat interpersonal tension arises? Really. Syr’Nj appears to be pouring the sap from her heartwood, while Byron sits around uncomfortably, prepared to leap away at a moment’s notice. It’s a grand picture, however, and it’s easy to interpose whatever hopes you may have for the plot on this particular moment. Well done, Erica, and good luck in all of your endeavors.
Yeah, but don’t all men look like that in awkward personal moments?
I tend to purse my lips and feign sincere and thoughtful interest.
I revert instantly to feline behaviour if I believe anyone is giving me positive attention.
It basically never happens any more though, which is fine too.
You know, I want to type something poignant, but about the best I can come up with is: Good-bye, artist-lady, we’ll miss you and your breathtaking art.
Also, epic sad music time.
Wait, a “farewell piece”? What did I miss? Somebody fill me in for Graiya’s sake!
In any case the said piece is just lovely. Full of that southern’ charm but without the slavery and all that “other stuff”.
Fairwell Piece?
Who!? What!? When!?
SOMEbody’s not reading the blog posts underneath the comic.
Wait, fuck, Erica’s leaving?!
Gold Star?
Demerit, actually.
Gold Demerit!
Consequences don’t work that way.
Without Erica consequences will never be the same!
Man, shit got real, we’re down to Full-Life Consequences. Without Erica, we can no longer be happy souls. She gave us hop.
At least the pants aren’t dead.
What blogposts? The only thing underneath the comic (except for the comments) are the occasional weird links that look like ads. I don’t follow GA over facebook if that’s what you mean.
I had no idea this was coming, it just suddenly hit me on the face.
the home page? that’s where the blog posts are. usually just phil telling us which convention he’s attending this weekend, and how it isn’t in tasmania.
this one was important tho.
I have my bookmark linked to one of the earlier strips so I always check on GA by going to that strip and then clicking “latest”. I haven’t visited the homepage in over a year, basically ever since I started following GA. I was so used to that little obscure janitor’s entrance I forgot there was such a thing as a front door.
yeah, i do that with johnny wander…but fortunately their comics come pre-blogged.
Yeah, I always leave a tab open with the last page of GA I’ve read. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the home page, or knew there was one.
The what now? If it’s not in the RSS feed and I don’t get there by clicking “next”, I probably won’t ever see it…
Oh, apparently it was in the feed … sorta. In severely truncated form, with no picture.
Ah well now I’ve made a mess. Here’s to Erica’s honor then: http://www.goldmax28.orangehome.co.uk/16-10-2010%283%29/Terry%20Reid%20-%20Erica.mp3 We’ll miss your pink hair. :3
It hasn’t been pink for over a week.
Then we miss it already. :)
Sorry to see you go, Erica. As Alma said, the art was part of what drew me to this comic. That’s the medium’s strongest character, the art. Guilded Age has a great take on the fantasy genre and I’m interested to see how the story progresses, however I’m reserving judgment to continue on who will graphically represent GA from here out. Please don’t go Gen 13 on me.
Once again, I wish there was a “Like” button I could press when I don’t feel like saying anything else.
I say again: I do not envy the artist they find to replace you. Work: totally cut out.
It’s at this point that everyone finally understands Syr’Nj’s relative age. We’ll miss you Erica, peace out!
Thankyou for the wonderful art we’ve had and a beautiful parting gift.
Well, shit, I’m torn. Good luck to you Erica!
Evidently there’s a blog somewhere? I’ve never seen it. Well, thanks for your work Erica. Particularly lovely page today.
We’ll miss you!
The characters at their most beautiful. Thanks for all the art Erica, it won’t be the same without ya! Best of luck!
yes, most of us have said our teary-eyed goodbyes under the comments section of said blog. But, we must soldier on and undertake the arduous task of being mildly inappropriate and punny once more… for the gipper. That said, its interesting that Syr’nj is almostly completely covered up here (which a burka could fix), but byron is still trying to check out her melons.
That about covered it.
I must admit I have not been reading the blog posts, and I am saddened by this news =(
Erica, I hope you have good luck in whatever you go on to, although you probably won’t need it because you are an amazing artist. Love this page, and will continue to check your blog regularly.
That being said, I still love the writers here, and even if they start illustrating it with stick figures, I would probably still read it. (probably) I don’t envy the new artist though. Erica has big shoes.
Yes, filling those shoes will be quite a feet.
Bravo
very tongue in cheek.
Yes, but I’m sure the new talent will be capable of toe-ing the line.
big changes are afoot, GA should tread carefully.
They may be treading water at first, but hopefully things will work out once they hit their stride.
Oh dear, responded to tread with tread, a misstep.
Careful not to step on the other poster’s toes.
No, wait… what? She’s leaving? Fuck guys! How come? The unique style was half the attraction of the webcomic! Damn!
More sadness. No matter who comes in to do the art, they just won’t be the same. I’ll stick around to see what happens – but I’m gonna miss Erica and her art. She gave T and Phil some much needed class, man.
You are a fantastic artist, Erica. I really enjoyed your work on this comic.
Loved the textured look of your work, best of luck in future endeavors, Erica. Guilded Age won’t be the same, what with ties in the writing process now being solved by gladiatorial fights.
Well, I guess it’s not completely lost, but it still sucks. Writing will still be fantastic, it’s just that I hope the next artist will be up to drawing all the fantastic moods and expressions of the characters.
It’s not an easy thing to do. If any of you read the webcomic Erfworld (recommended!) they too had a change of artists- the original artist had a fantastic style and altough the one that came after is not quite as good, she’s still done a fantastic job.
So I think that even if we perhaps will never have the same quality again, we can probably expect it to still be great.
that’s a little rough. erica’s an awesome artist, and she’s set a very high bar- but there’s no reason that her replacement won’t be just as good. i’m just curious as to how phil and T are hunting them down.
I really like this piece as it hints at things I have begun to hope for in terms of character development, and yet someone else could read something completely different into it. Thanks for everything you have brought us so far in this series Erica, I really have enjoyed the balance between the art and writing. I look forward to the continued adventures of the gang (with some trepidation – but come on, these guys will pick someone they can trust) and wish you all the best in whatever paths you now pursue.
And, as Robin Williams once said, “joke ’em if they can’t take a f**k”.
This is a lovely piece.
It’s a shame she’s leaving because I loved the art in combination with he characters and writing.
Here’s hoping the next artist does just as well.
Man bummer great style will miss it but hey things change thats life wat can ya do. That said keep up the hard work u guys r all awesome GL to Erika :)
Good luck Erica – good luck and have fun. You’ll be missed. :'(
The Auld Grump, have fun stormin’ the castle!
Everything, that came up my mind have been said by previous commentators… But I cannot resist, but tell you, that I love your work… I will miss this unique style.
May all gods watch your steps, and may the Moon bring you happiness, the Sun bring you luck and warmth!
Hopefully you won’t regret leaving. Ever.
Thanks…
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! Awwwwwwwwwwwwww!
Whoever takes over the art should be able to match this. In fact, that should be the test for the job: they have to give us a comparable picture of Frigg and Best slurping each other.
Oops, just realized, Syr is wearing normal boots. Shouldn’t she be wearing something open tipped so her toe/roots can breath?
what will their babies look like?
