Tomodachi Age 3
The interesting thing about everyone’s reaction to Tomodachi Age so far is that a lot of people didn’t know the part where these images are based on randomly-generated game content. And that’s kind of a big deal in coming anywhere close to appreciating this sort of thing, I’m sure. So sorry for not making that clear before, I mistakenly thought it was a well-known fact.
So, yep! Hopefully this new knowledge will save this experiment from being an utter disaster and steer it closer to “Hit or miss” territory!
MANAGED EXPECTATIONS.
Well, looks like not many people have a 3DS/2DS, and those who don’t have aren’t so much in the loop.
I don’t even look much into the Pokémon games (mostly to still have something unspoiled to explore when exams are over), so the general idea I had about Tomodachi Life was “alright, looks like GMod but with Miis, so what?”.
Now that I know those things are randomly generated… I wonder why anyone won’t create/release a remake of the John Castaway screensaver.
Oh how I would diligently watch JC during holidays. Now all we get are energy savers or Avast’s scan/screensaver that hasn’t a “ludicrous speed” animation yet.
Would someone enlighten me as to what ‘Tomodachi’, ‘GMod’ and “Miis’ mean?
Maybe I’m not getting this because I still don’t really understand what’s going on.
“Tomodachi” is a little game by Nintendo where you create little people and watch them interact, like a fish tank. “Miis” (singular “Mii”) are personas one can create for use on Nintendo game platforms, namely the Wii. “GMod” is a short for “Gary’s Mod”, a sandbox game by Valve where you can create scenes or video using models from some of their games, including Team Fortress 2 and Half-Life, as well as the physics engine.
Thanks. Phil’s comments have been kinda helpful, but I lack the background knowledge to follow him.
So these are screenshots of the random interactions of game figures based on the GA characters? Beyond physical appearance (which I don’t think is particularly strong), how much of the GA character’s traits and behaviors can be programmed into the Mii? Can a Frigg Mii be set to be more aggressive than an E-Merl one? Or are their behaviors completely random, to the point that they’re just game pieces who happen to look like GA characters but don’t otherwise resemble them?
I appreciate everyone’s patience. I’m Googling some of this, but I’m not following much of what I find.
Well, I’d be happy to explain further:
Yes, these are screenshots of random interactions from Tomodachi Life, a Sims/Gigapet sort of concept game that utilizes Nintendo’s Miis.
Their resemblance to the characters in the comic are, of course, doing the best I can with the Miis’ limited range of options.
As far as personality programming, when you generate/import a Mii in Tomodachi Life, it gives you a short survey that asks things like “Are they extroverted or introverted,” “Do they typically move fast or slow,” “Do they like trying new things,” etc. It then assigns personality types based on the answers you provide.
So they end up being mostly like their in-game analogs, but I would say that is hardly the point.
Thanks!
When you say “that is hardly the point”, are you referring to the point of the game or the point of TA week? Either way, what would you say is the point?
I mean “The game versions of our cast being super close in behavior to the comic versions of our cast is not really important, because it’s funnier if they deviate somewhat.”
Tomodachi means ‘friend’ in Japanese! :D
Yeah, that’s the most frequent definition I found with Google. Unfortunately, by itself it doesn’t make sense in the context it’s being used here (a Nintendo game).
It probably does for the Japanese. You’d be surprised. o:
“I have more cats than you.” The finishing blow of all rap battles.
Yep, a real mic dropper, that…
HA, yeah. I’m not a fan of these Tomodachi pages in general, but that made me LOL IRL.
That showstopping claws. The dopest rapper in town, rollin’ seventy deep in pussycats.
Number of contented cats is the surest measure of success in life.
I certainly would not have expected this encounter to go that way.
Phil’s got Bandit and Gravedust on his side, so even though he lost, I have to side with him. >_>
TCambell has the illest rhymes.
You’re just trash, the crowd wants me to hold the mike.
Frigg and Sundar seemed to know that they were coming for blood. Gravedust and Bandit don’t really care much.
This is all so AutoTuned.
It´s a virtual doll house. How cute…blargh.
(As a hater, I would like to see machineguns and flamethrowers introduced into the game.
Let´s see how their little snuggly puggly world will handle THAT.
Let.
Them.
BURN !)
Though being a hater is, of course, a very necessary public service, have you considered just waiting silently and patiently until Monday when regular comics resume instead?
‘… very necessary public service, …’
Screen wipes, please!
How about brain wipes, instead? XD
Its actually a compliment that their addiction to your comic and its comment section (these are two separate addictions which is why they also can’t just sit by silently once here) is so strong that they keep hitting the “feed button” every day even though the last couple of times they got chunks coal.
How appropriate, you rap like a cow!
Just ask yourself: “How d’you like me now?”
Nope. Randomness doesn’t matter. It’s still very non-relevant filler which isn’t holding any kind of interest.
With you, perhaps. Though I appreciate your effort to speak on everyone’s behalf just as they requested you to.
Do not like. What if there were cats that looked like our characters? I would watch that. ;)
This is golden.
Indeed. Especially this one.
Hey, can we get two more weeks of this? I find it a bit interesting, but what I like more are the continued indignant complaints about what you already said was filler until the new strips were being made.
Don’t appreciate it? Post a new complaint about it every day of the week, I’m sure it helps get the strips done faster!
Yeah, I can’t tell you how encouraged and appreciated we feel from repeatedly being told we are wasting their precious time while we give them free content almost daily.
It’s always that vocal (and ungrateful) minority. Think about all the folks that don’t post a single comment here that come to this site daily that don’t post anything here… I am sure quite a number of them don’t reflect as abrasive as an attitude as the ones that have come to take for granted what you do as regular routine. You could have simply not post anything at all and wrote a simple announcement when comics would resume, and not entertain us at all with any sort of filler.
Try not to let the spoiled get to you, and know the people that generally lurk are thankful even if we don’t always post our appreciation. ;)
P.S.: I also really don’t want to see another amazing storyteller that is doing this all for free, become belittled by the immature criticism that damages them emotionally when they aren’t prepared to seeing said vocal minority comment… the two that immediately spring to mind are Tarol Hunt of Goblins, and Caroline Curtis way back with 9th Elsewhere.
Thank you again for sharing your story. :)
I appreciate it. And yeah, I don’t get let “them” get to me any further than occasionally doling out snide comments in return!
THE SNIDE COMMENTS MAKE THE COMMENTS SECTION 50% MORE FUN TO READ
What’s the other 50%? ;-)
I’ll be honest, I’m not fond of it, but then again I don’t get my daughters (both in their 20’s) fascination with minecraft, either.
However, some random punchlines are still good for a laugh!
YAY INTERNETS! THE HOME OF GRIEFIN, TROLLS AND CAPSLOCK
I’ve been finding these fairly amusing. Also, it’s nice to get a little more insight to tomodatchi life, which I’ve been considering getting.
I’m sure the resumed comic will be more than worth the wait. We’ve got three or four cliffhangers going right now, that will be interesting to see how they get resolved.
I regret intermissions like this, as they break both the continuity of the story and my sense of the interacting characters. When fanfiction – and this is what Mii-based material amounts to in Guilded Age, regardless of author – is inserted in the main story link-thread, my emotional involvement is jarred -and loses some of the intensity of attachment that this comic cosmos had previously won. Better by far to let the readers wait for the story to resume, and meanwhile post sidelines like this one in a “Dainties and Diversions” link or some such. IMHO only. Don’t burn me as a heretic, please.
Hey, I may be snide, but I’m never unwilling to hear out a legit criticism!
There’s nothing we can do about this affecting the daily updates’ carrying of the story, but I completely understand how you feel about this sort of thing happening in archives, especially with stuff that are basically advertisements for our Kickstarter and so on. Looking into modifying the site in a manner that allows you to read the main comic installments through without interruption is definitely something that’s been on my To Do list around here (albeit at an admittedly low priority).
But yeah, this is good input. Thank you. Sorry for making it seem like I would retaliate in response!
I’ve been thoroughly enjoying these anyway, but this installment was GOLDEN. Little T. Campbell spontaneously engaging in a rap battle, and winning handily? Art imitates life, it seems!
Yea it sucks but I’m amused. I hope this experiment was fun for you. I really think you guys are uber kewl for reading all the comments and taking time to answer them all. I mean I could take one of these evry Sunday. between all the queries to the cast and Monday’s mayhem.
always late to the party…
for the longest time I thought Tomodachi was a reboot of the Tomagatchi eggs from the 90’s. Didn’t even notice they were spelled differently until a couple months ago. I think it was when Phil his marriage on Facebook to person of significance who I don’t know and a small corner of the interwebs lost their shit until he dropped the Tomodachi gotcha. I was pretty sure this wasn’t a game about raising a little alien from an egg at that point.
*Phil announced.
seriously, how did I drop a whole friggin’ word.
I have more cats than (some of) you.
Am I the only one who wonders what happens in Frigg’s rap battles?
Love it!
The interwebs need an IRL video of this.
