Annotated 1-2
“I can always do science to it.” Fun fact: we donated some of our surplus printed stock to a charity looking for uplifting reading material in general, with a special emphasis on science education for girls and women. Sure, an epic fantasy series wasn’t right in the center of their wheelhouse, but you can bet that Syr’Nj’s role as a confident STEM-educated woman-elf was on my mind when I made contact.
Still, you see what I mean about Syr’Nj and Gravedust’s dynamic not being quite… “there” yet. This may have played better if we had still shown this scene first but written it after the chapter’s other segments, because even those few pages each allowed us to work out a lot of the kinks of who those characters were.
Ah, the line that hooked me on the series.
I always thought it was a tribute to Dresden Codak’s Kimiko Ross in this page.
That was very likely an influence, but I think it took us a little while to recognize that source of inspiration.
If you put the last half of that last panel on a t-shirt just the way it is you could probably sell a few. If you’ve already done this and I missed it, I’m going to get quite irate.
Seconded. You’re leaving money on the table, people!
Not to mention a just straight-up awesome T-shirt I would totally buy once I had the means again.
Actually, I want one with both bits — Gravy’s question and The Answer. Context is everything!
Syr’nj in a nutshell.
I still love the fist few pages
The first three pages on this comic sold it to me so hard I binged the damn thing in a couple of days, sadly the comic was about done already.
Now I get some neat commentary and a chance to post on every page! There really is a Tectonicus! Praised be!
Fun fact: I originally intended “Chickadee” to be something Bandit would regularly call people dear to her but I somehow never followed up on it??
In this phase I imagined Bandit having a southern accent and Chickadee definitely contributed to that impression whether that makes sense or not.
I think a lot of the odd character quirks found in this chapter can be hand waved. In my mind’s eye, the Sepia world versions of five created the Arkerra versions as they went along. Slowly losing themselves completely in character.
Definitely noticed how different the characters seemed this very early on, especially Syr and Gravy with all the snark and sarcasm. I guess it takes time for things to settle and come into their own when starting a new work of fiction. With books you can rewrite things but comics and movies generally don’t have that luxury.
This reads so much like a transcript of a tabletop RP session. The GM doesn’t even have to roleplay the gnoll’s frustration at this point. ^_^
Frigg’s line here was what sold me on bookmarking this comic.
Which, fo’ realz or the oral sex joke?
Yes.
My crush on Syr’Nj erupted into a great, roaring flame.
