Annotated 8-16
He got the moooooooves like Jagger…
Nice work from Phil on the sound effects here. I think I might’ve helped with the Frank Miller-ish WHUD somehow, but memory is foggy and I can’t find any email records to back me up.
We’re continuing to do nice simple stuff with camera distance and angle. Sandwiched between the complicated and space-demanding panel 1 and the impactful and space-demanding panel 5, the reaction shots have a progression: from closer to further away, from less dialogue to more, from a shout of obvious anguish to a whimper of selfish panic to a snarl of irritation and deeply veiled worry.
Hrm, in a way, Bandit’s line makes a lot of sense if you think her player was likely thinking.
“Oh shit, we are way underleveled for this. He’s ignoring all our abilities and just one-shot our DPS.”
Indeed
The art had changed so much from when he started to this point.
Yeah, I think my line work was a little too thin and too smooth back then at the beginning. I just wanted it to look good, and I think I over did it. Phil advised me to make “more imperfections!”, so I started to loosen up my style a bit in the coming chapters. I learned what I DIDN’T have to do, and found that the LESS perfect it was, the better it looked.
I find this to be the case with my sketches as well. If I clean up and ink them, they are less well received. People tend to prefer the originals, warts and all.
You probably won’t catch this late reply, but I personally prefer (and love) the earlier work by a large margin, though judging from the ancient comments I am not on the majority. Regardless, I’m happy you found a style you liked better, but I thought to let you know, I loved your initial work a lot.
Frigg losing her shit never gets old.
Truth
The transition from Erica to John really was a big thing. It was distracting at first, but I’m surprised upon reflection to see how quickly everything in the art just clicked. I always really liked Erica’s art, but this feels more like Guilded Age now.
Man this has been enjoyable, going back and re-reading GA.
It has, hasn’t it? I’m surprised more webcomics don’t do something like this.
I remember being so angry when I first read this… It’s easier seeing it knowing how events turn out.
It is literally impossible for him to have been able to do that based on what the last panel of the last page showed and I gotta admit, that’s always bugged me.
I actually had to go and check to find the “whud”
